If prescriptive linguistic principles were applied to zooology :P
If you love language, be a descriptivist, not a prescriptivist!
Remember:
Just because a word isn't in your dictionary, doesn't mean it isn't a word.
Just because a dialect is different from the standard language, doesn't mean it isn't valid.
Just because someone uses a word in a way you aren't familiar with, doesn't mean they are wrong.
And, however you feel about it, language evolution is inevitable, so you might as well enjoy it :)

Come watch Professor Rickford deliver the 2017 Freeman Lecture today at 2:30 in ILC N151!

"Professor John Rickford of Stanford University, one of the world’s foremost experts on the structure, history and sociolinguistics of African-American Vernacular English, delivers the 2017 Freeman Lecture, titled “Justice for Jeantel (and Trayvon): Fighting Dialect Prejudice in Courtrooms and Beyond.”

In his talk, Rickford unpacks the testimony and treatment of Rachel Jaental, the leading prosecution witness when George Zimmerman was tried for killing Trayvon Martin. During her testimony, Jeantal spoke using African-American Vernacular English, and her testimony was dismissed as incomprehensible and not credible. Rickford approaches Jeantal’s experience through the lens of a linguist, but crafts his talk—which tackles institutionalized racism and ways vernacular speakers might be heard—for a general audience."

Food for thought.

This rule is not inviolable. It does not "absolutely" have to be in this order. That is just silly, wrong and stupid.

But as a general guideline it is useful.

"Big red" is way more common than "red big"

Hey guys!

We'll be having our end of the year "netflix and chill" event in an hour in ILC N400. Stop by to eat pizza and watch a great movie about linguistics!

The doors will be open until 7 so don't worry about it being locked until then. If for some reason it is, feel free to bang on the door and cry out in desperation, or message the FB page to let you in.
