HCEMS We are nationally and Massachusetts certified EMTs that provide services for Hampshire College! Call 413-559-5555 from any cell phone or x5555 from any campus phone to reach the EMTs.

Call us for: Alcohol poisoning, head injury, cuts, vomiting, mental health crisis, etc. Anything you feel like you might need medical assistance with! If you're unsure, give us a call, we're happy to come and check you out. Please visit our website for up-to-date information on hours, hiring, and more! Here's who we are in a nutshell: -We provide medical coverage of Hampshire College with 2 student EMTs on call during operating hours. -We are certified as EMTs both nationally and in the state of Massachusetts. -We provide free medical treatment to students, faculty, staff, and visitors. -We have an average response time of approximately 2 minutes to calls located anywhere on campus. -We attend all calls with Public Safety in order to provide safety for patients, bystanders, and EMTs.

Mission: The Hampshire College Emergency Medical Service (HCEMS) is a student-run organization that provides 24-hour emergency medical services to the Hampshire College community. The rural location of the college delays the response time of the Amherst Fire Department's ambulance up to ten minutes. Hampshire's need for a faster emergency response inspired 5 EMT-certified students to organize the Hampshire College Emergency Medical Service in 1976. HCEMS is one of the longest running student organizations on campus. Officially in operation since 1978, it has seen a variety of leadership styles and membership sizes, yet there is seldom a day during the school year when the program is not in full service.

Operating as usual

03/21/2020

HCEMS is no longer permitted to work the rest of this semester as the Hampshire College corona response team has decided it would be hazardous for the EMTs as we don’t have the supplies that most hospitals or other agencies have in terms of personal protective equipment ( ie. masks and body substance isolation equipment). Many of us will go home to work with our communities but please stay safe! At Hampshire if you or your friends are staying you can still get medical attention and help if needed please continue to call campus safety or 9-1-1 for help. If you are experiencing flu like symptoms please let them know when you call. Please reach out if you guys have questions and look at the CDCs information on corona virus as it seems to change daily. Stay safe and help each other guys! We’ll all get through this semester together! ❤️🙌❤️🙌

HAMP HALLOWEEN is this Friday night, October 25th and there are some things that you should know about HCEMS coverage during the events on campus!

HC EMTs will be on call normal hours that night (2 EMTs, 8 pm Friday night - 5 am on Saturday) in addition to some extra coverage. Two additional EMTs will be working from 10 pm - 3 am.

We will be stationed in Franklin Patterson Hall (FPH) Faculty lounge across from the East and West Lecture Halls during the extra coverage hours (10 pm - 3 am).

In past years, we have had both a triage room and Amherst Fire paramedics stationed at the college and we can't implement that this year due to staff and other logistical obstacles.

TO ACTIVATE EMS RESPONSE:

In an emergency (without activating Amherst Police): Call 413-559-5555 (Campus Safety Emergency Number)

OR CALL 911 DIRECTLY (This will activate APD directly as well).

In a non-emergent situation: Call 413-559-5424 (Campus Safety Non-Emergent Number)

If you have any questions or comments/concerns, contact us at [email protected] or visit us on Facebook!

Fall 2018 Hampshire College EMS Scholarship Application

THE FALL 2019 EMT SCHOLARSHIP APPLICATION NOW OPEN!

The application is for full-time Hampshire College students who would like to become EMTs but do not have the financial means to do it on their own. We are not currently affiliated with a specific EMT course, so applicants are encouraged to have a course in mind coming into an interview. We will pay up to $1,200 for course tuition only for students who receive the scholarship.

HCEMS's directors have decided to give out up to five scholarships this semester because of decreased enrollment and, therefore, employment. We would prefer to give scholarships to people who are able to be certified by the Spring semester so that we can field train enough EMTs by next Fall.

If you have any questions, please don't hesitate to contact us here or via email at [email protected].

Have a fantastic semester!
Draft of a letter to send if people are looking for ways to help! Dear Gloria, Pam and Carolyn, As you are all aware, Hampshire College EMTs have been asking to be paid to be on-call 24/7 for some time now. As you all also know, this proposal is not new--historically our EMTs have been on-call 24/7. In fact, this has been the case for over 30 years. As a student who attends college here and who has been talking to fellow students about this issue, I can assure you that having EMT coverage 24/7 is of PARAMOUNT importance to the health and safety of our campus. For many of our students, ambulance rides and hospital visits are impossibly inaccessible and needlessly expensive. When the EMTs are not available, Amherst Fire Department is the only option available to students who need emergency medical care. While I understand the hesitation about raising fees, I need you all to understand that many of us, myself included, would be overjoyed to pay 85 more dollars if it meant that we had round-the-clock EMT services that are FREE for students to access, wherever and whenever. Hampshire college EMTs are vital to our campus. They are our peers and colleagues. They are tapped in to Hampshire's climate and culture. They respect our pronouns and wide variety of cultural backgrounds. They are regular and friendly and trusted faces in our community, and they make help accessible to students who otherwise would not be comfortable interacting with police or fire department members. As members of the administration responsible for the well-being of students, I urge you to pass the raise in EMT fees. Many of us could not attend the public ballot because of conflicts in our schedules, but I assure you all that this is an issue that students across campus feel passionately about. To fail to pay our EMTs for providing 24/7 service would be an embarrassment to Hampshire College and an absolute failure to the students whom you are paid to provide for. Sincerely,
