We just told HCs we are collecting 1000 pairs of socks for #socktober! Help us meet our goal because #LeadersLoveSocktober #UMassLife
It’s no secret that we LOVE Kid President! Not only do we love his message, we love how he encourages us to step up and be active in our communities. He has declared this month SOCKtober. He has a goal of getting one million people involved to help the homeless, starting with collecting socks (see his inspirational message here: http://youtu.be/dFZGyUZ9YrM). You can check out http://soulpancake.com/socktober/ for even more information.
The Student Leadership Center has decided to participate in SOCKtober and extend it into SOCKvember (slightly less creative… but what can we do?). We have set the goal of collecting 1,000 pairs of new socks. Craig’s Doors (a shelter in Amherst) has socks on their wish list (http://www.craigsdoors.org/wishlist/). They open November 1st for the season, and we would love to help them prepare to support our community members in need during the coldest portion of our year.
“How can I help?!”
Great question. How folks choose to participate is up to them. Maybe your House Council wants to run a sock drive in conjunction with their next program. Maybe PMs collect them in their offices. We hope you and your students can utilize your creativity to support this initiative in a way that makes sense in your role/community.
We would also love to have a social media presence. Please feel free to tweet, Facebook, blog, etc. to your heart’s content.
You might be asking…
• How long will this last? Our drive will last through November 15th.
• Can we only give socks? Nope! We will take anything off of Craig’s Doors wish list, but our goal is around socks. http://www.craigsdoors.org/wishlist/
• Are there any relevant policies we need to be aware of? Yep! We do have to adhere to the solicitation policy (http://www.housing.umass.edu/pdf/Solicitation%20Policy.pdf). We cannot go door to door soliciting money or goods. However, collection of these items can happen in other venues (dining halls, outside space, etc.). We can, however, go door to door sharing information if we wish.
• How will we know how the drive is going? We will be posting a giant sock in the window of our office tracking our progress towards 1,000 pairs of socks. Also, we encourage you to have anyone who donates socks write their name on a paper sock (design attached). We will hang these up in the window as well as a demonstration of both thanks and our commitment to our community.
Please feel free to share this widely. And, because we think you are awesome, here’s another bit of Kid President inspiration about just how awesome you are: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nFGcrYPdrJU
Leadership Principles:"When it comes to recognition, as a leader it truly is better to give than to receive, and definitely better than taking"

Nothing undermines a leader more quickly, or more thoroughly, than the leader looking to claim all of the credit for success for himself.

We are currently recruiting students to participate in a photo shoot. These photos will be used in Res Life publications, as well as publications for Student Affairs throughout the year. We are hoping you can help us to recruit students who might be interested in participating.
