Dear Western MA community,

The Western MA ISO is defunct as of ~3 months ago. A few of us ex-members, including myself, have continued to meet off and on these past months to do what we personally feel needs to be done before we go our separate ways or try to start anything new. A key task we set for ourselves is to write a public apology letter to all the folks with whom we have interacted over the years, as we know or suspect that we caused harm to many of you in our time as ISO members.

We are including both the main version of the apology letter and the "long version" (which spends much more time analyzing, in particular, our bad anti-oppression politics and practice) which may be of interest to activists. I will link in the comments both the google docs and the audio files (which I recorded for both versions to try to improve accessibility).

Sincerely,
Sean T-P (ze/hir)

Letter to the ISO membership

To the broader community that interacts with the ISO: there is a crisis unfolding within our organization as decades of abuse and mistreatment are finally being brought into the light. For most in the organization these revelations are coming as an absolute shock, and we are dealing with the fact that many leaders who we looked to for guidance failed to uphold the principles that we stand for.

Those who have chosen to remain in the organization are charting a new path forward and are committed to reckoning with our past as we do so. I encourage those with questions, or who have a grievance to air, to reach out to the Western Mass branch.

The Steering Committee of the ISO writes to members about a deep crisis in the organization and the steps being taken to address it.

43: Wyomia Tyus takes no prisoners; socialism is coming to the USA

Episode 43 is (finally) live! Wyomia Tyus is a legendary sprinter, feminist pioneer, participant in the '68 Mexico City Olympics protests for Black Power and human rights, and a badass who danced in the starting blocks to psych out her opponents before setting a world record. Wyomia is the co-author with Elizabeth Terzakis of "Tigerbelle: the Wyomia Tyus Story" and the two of them joined us for this fun and inspiring conversation.

In the opener, we ever so respectfully disagree with Trump's state of the union vow that socialism will never come to the US.

In this episode, we talk to three-time gold medalist Wyomia Tyus about her memoir Tigerbelle: The Wyomia Tyus Story. We are also joined by her co-author Elizabeth Terzakis. In our intro, we discuss Tr

Today is the first day of the Denver Teachers' Strike. Stand in solidarity with educators as they fight for the schools students deserve.

If you've got a couple of extra dollars, please donate to Tamales for Teachers and feed the struggle.

#strikeready #RedforEd #solidarity

⚠️ Update ⚠️

Tamales for Teachers will be supporting the pickets at East *and* South High Schools, for the duration of the strike or until our funds run out. These will be large, lively pickets—150 of 164 teachers at East are walking, for instance!

We will also be at a smaller picket outside Manual High School on Monday morning to provide particular support to teachers of color who have raised anti-racist concerns, such as racialized privatization efforts and the school-to-prison pipeline.

If you can come out, please do! Teachers want all the support they can get. Dress warm. Wear red. Bring a sign in support of teachers. And bring a friend! Sign up here: https://bit.ly/2SF0iQg

If you can’t come out, please share and donate to our fundraiser! With enough funds, we could add support for additional schools.

Hope to see you out on the lines! Victory to the teachers!

The Venezuelan People Must Decide, Not Trump - Statement of the ISO - International Socialist Organization

Read the ISO statement on Venezuela:

"We defend the right of Venezuelans to choose their leaders, but as one solidarity statement put it: “The people no longer want Maduro, but no one chose Guaidó.”

The Venezuelan people have suffered enough. We demand an end to U.S. interference. We say:

No to the Guaidó-Trump coup
End all U.S. sanctions on Venezuela.
Withdraw all elements of the U.S. Navy Fourth Fleet
End all U.S. economic, political and diplomatic aid to the right-wing opposition.
Economic refugees should be welcomed into the U.S.
Abolish all debt held by U.S. and European banks, the World Bank and the IMF"

Right-wing opposition leader Juan Guaidó has declared himself interim president of Venezuela against sitting President Nicolás Maduro, and he was immediately recognized by the U.S. government and a range of authoritarian leaders in Latin America. Here, the International Socialist Organization st...

Black history matters every day, but this deal on black liberation literature is only for the month of February.

"Black History Month is not only a celebration of the rich history of Black life, politics, culture, and struggle. It is also a reminder to engage every day with that history as we work to build a strong anti-racist resistance movement. "As the Trump administration and other governments escalate their threats against Venezuela, the international left is uniting to condemn the undemocratic drive for a coup. A statement initiated by the Partido Revolucionario de los y las Trabajadores of Mexico and signed by other leftists and left-wing organizations condemns the imperialist threat hanging over the head of the Nicolás Maduro government and demands that the Venezuelan people be allowed to democratically decide their own government."--Ashley Smith

Why just get that bread when you can give it to striking teachers and their students?

#solidarity #RedForEd #strikeready (more like #strikeBready)

Three ways to stand in solidarity with Oakland students and teachers:

1. Give to the Oakland Education Association strike fund. This will enable teachers to go on strike for as long as is necessary, and still pay the bills. https://www.gofundme.com/striking-oakland-teachers

2. Sign up to ‘adopt‘ an Oakland school here: https://goo.gl/forms/WTFMVMVHk5szWYb93

3. #BreadForEd - Donate to the "Bread for Ed" food fund which will feed striking teachers and students and families who choose not to cross the picket line (and who therefore will not have access to school lunches, which many Oakland families rely on): https://donorbox.org/breadfored

CERSC

Dear facebook community, the Western Mass Branch of the International Socialist Organization is officially kicking off our fundraiser for the Center for Economic Research and Social Change.

This phenomenal organization is instrumental in growing and disseminating broad left voices and ideas. Follow the link below to learn more about some of the specific projects they support such as Haymarket Books, the International Socialist Review, and the Domestic Worker Oral History Project, among others. Our branch, and the ISO as a whole would not be the organization we are today without CERSC.

https://cersc.org/

Our branch has set a goal of raising $3,000 dollars to support this ongoing work. Can you help us reach our goal?

The easiest way to donate is by going to this link: https://cersc.networkforgood.com/projects/32093-cersc, selecting your amount and frequency. Please allocate this to the CERSC fund drive.

You can also donate in person at our events, such as the upcoming Sorry to Bother You film screening on Saturday. https://www.facebook.com/events/786272778431524

The Center for Economic Research and Social Change (CERSC) is an educational organization that seeks to highlight alternative voices, especially those that have been pushed to the margins. Unable to make it to our meeting last week? You have another opportunity to hear our comrade Fermin Solidaridad speak about his experiences talking with members of the migrant caravan during his recent trip to Mexico City. This and more in this week's episode of Better Off Red Podcast!

This week is all about the border: the struggle at the border, solidarity efforts with the migrant caravan and the politics of the border. Jo Morales reports from Tijuana on the conditions there and the attack on migrants with teargas and rubber bullets. Claire Douglas (Dougy Fresco) reports on the solidarity efforts in San Diego and Fermin Solidaridad shares his experience talking to refugees sheltered in Mexico City. Then we have an interview with Justin Akers Chacón in which he demolishes Angela Nagle's "case" against open borders.

Socialist Worker, a tribune of the oppressed since 1977!

A little bit about our website - Socialist Worker

"ABOUT SOCIALIST WORKER
The powers that be have media outlets to tell their side of the story. We need ours. SocialistWorker.org aims to be a place to find news, analysis and commentary from the socialist point of view.

SocialistWorker.org began as the online version of the print newspaper Socialist Worker, founded in 1977 and published by the International Socialist Organization. Read the International Socialist Organization’s “Where We Stand” for a brief statement of the tradition it stands in.

SocialistWorker.org is committed to giving a voice to those struggling for a better world, seeking out the stories of labor struggles that are seldom reported in the mainstream media--and never reported on from the point of view of those fighting back. From interviews with striking miners in Kentucky in the 1970s to today’s debates about how to rebuild a fighting labor movement, we’ve tried to bring workers’ experiences and opinions to a wider audience.

We’ve reported on campaigns for social change and economic justice in the U.S. and around the world — from the movement against South African apartheid in the 1980s to the Palestinian struggle against Israel’s apartheid today; from the struggles for Black liberation and immigrant rights to organizing for women’s rights and LGBT liberation, and much more.

SocialistWorker.org also seeks to provide a forum for discussion and debate of the political questions facing activists and socialists today. Key to this is presenting Marxist analysis of important questions of the day, socialist analysis of world news and events, and keeping alive the rich and too-often-hidden history of working-class struggle and the socialist tradition."

Today’s working class is multiracial, made up of multiple genders and nationalities, and many people with a variety of disabilities. Because of this, combatting oppression is a working-class issue, and will be vital to rebuilding a fighting class-based movement. There is no reason to counterpose oppression and exploitation, when solidarity between all workers will advance the entire working class and all its oppressed members—if the movement champions the rights of all those who suffer oppression.
