How to Do Holiday Giving Without the Holiday Spending
For many of us, giving (and receiving) thoughtful gifts feels lovely at the holidays. Especially this year, with so much sadness and struggle, it’s reasonable to want to do something nice for family, friends, and ourselves. But that desire is at odds with another reality many of us are facing (every year, but especially this one): real financial constraints. This year, what if we put the pressure to buy off the table, and instead found new ways to give without financial sacrifices?https://kindaguide.org/feature-articles/how-to-do-holiday-giving-without-the-holiday-spending
A weekly handbook for parents and caregivers with kids at home, work to get done, and too much to worry about.
Samm Delorey wrote a children’s book, which is a retelling of The Ugly Duckling, about families that do not all look the same. It is available for FREE download in both English and Spanish for the rest of the day!
It's a lovely book to share it with your kids no matter what your own family structure - and downloading it helps raise the book's Kindle ranking so that more people can find it. Check it out!
Reminder: THURSDAYS at 12:00 noon The Jones Library's offers their weekly Lunch-break Story-time! The Children's Room staff are working their way through the alphabet one story at a time, adding in a few songs, rhymes and a little sign language to their presentations! Here’s the November 21 Earth Matters, by new contributor Laurie Sanders. Just in time for a (Covid-safe) Thanksgiving, she gives us reason to be grateful for the many conservation areas in our region. They not only protect important habitats that in turn protect species we care about, but they provide places for us to ramble, meditate, and marvel.
Enjoy! https://www.gazettenet.com/Earth-Matters-Keeping-nature-intact-in-ct-river-valley-37407431
P.S. If you’re unable to access the Gazette page, wait a few days and go to the Hitchcock Center website, www.hitchcockcenter.org, where you’ll find the article on the home page.
If you’re interested in natural history, the Connecticut River Valley is a great place to live. The combination of geology, hydrology, human history and climate create a remarkable diversity of habitats. In Northampton, where most of my conservation...

The Amherst Family Center is a gathering place for families with children five years and younger, which offers a safe, stimulating play-space for young children and a pleasant, welcoming meeting-place for their adults. Parents, grandparents, and caregivers can enjoy time with their young ones, build community with other families, and access a variety of resources and support programs. Young children can play and learn in an inviting, age-appropriate setting, rich in social opportunities.
Since its founding in 1986, the purpose of the Amherst Family Center (AFC) has been to empower families with young children by providing a friendly, child-centered space in which caregiver and children alike can learn and thrive.
Participation in the AFC drop-in playgroup is available to any Hampshire County or University affiliated family with young children, and is part of a larger state and county wide network of local area family centers. Open Monday through Friday mornings from nine to noon, from September through June, the AFC is located in the old brick schoolhouse across from the North Amherst Library, at 1200 North Pleasant Street in Amherst MA.
Please note: The AFC follows the Amherst Regional Public School calendar for the K-12 vacation schedule, for federal and state holidays and for weather-related delays and closings.
Along with in-person full day programs in Amherst for 0-5 year olds, please spread the word about the Head Start at Home program at Community Action's Head Start & Early Learning Programs. https://www.facebook.com/CAPVHeadStart/posts/2769199290027967
I wrote a book for kids in foster care and kids who have been adopted that is a retelling of the ugly duckling. It is illustrated by local artist, Vivian Franklin, and I would love your support.
It is directed at kids age 3-8 who live with family members that don't look like them. It is targeted at kids in foster care and who have been adopted, but it is more broadly applicable to kids who split their time between homes.
You can support this project for as little as $1, or buy a copy for your home for $20, or buy a copy that I will give to a child in foster care for $18.
You can also help out for free by just sharing this campaign. I am not profiting from the book, but just trying to get out as many copies as possible for the kids who need to see their families represented.
