Graduate Integration Studio is a comprehensive studio that focuses on integration of building systems, construction documentation, & technical aspects of architectural design. This semester students worked on construction documentation for their designs for a U.S. Consulate Building in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. The project is a collaboration with the U.S. Department of State through the Diplomacy Lab. In Integration Studio, students work on comprehensive design, integrations of different building systems (i.e. structure, mechanical and building enclosure systems), and technical design development. This work is from M.Arch student Nate Lumen. #umassarchitecture #umassamherst #masterofarchitecture #buildingsystems #integrationstudio

G1 Studio Final project is the design for a museum/residence inspired by the study of a unique natural phenomenon. John Miller designed for a fictive personality whose interest keys into the process by which a male Japanese pufferfish constructs its nest. The project addresses two distinct concepts of life, work, & congregation focused around the themes of curiosity, display, & containment of one’s collection of drawings & objects.

Design 3 Studio designed a mixed-use building in downtown Amherst that was informed by their research into the health and social well-being challenges brought about by Covid-19. The Grad Design 3 Studio designed multifamily housing for migrant farm workers in Amherst, MA. Cami Quinteros’ project hopes to include a sense of connection to farm work through their building. With a conviction that migrants are not here to assimilate, but rather to enrich the place to which they arrive, this project aims to create a world of possibilities as well as resilience. #umassarchitecture #umassamherst #masterofarchitecture #studioproject #architectureschool

Join us for EXACTITUDE 2020 this Friday and Saturday- a symposium to explore in which ways can the creative process of architecture respond to the contemporary demand for greater exactitude on phenomenal, formal, spatial, and tectonic levels while also meeting its ethical obligations and exercising its imaginative capacities?

How do recent developments in the field activate the architect’s imagination to invent new images, concepts, and ideas? Is it still possible for the architect to be defined as an individual artist, with his or her “signature style,” when the medium involves so many layers of technology and collaborative work?

Ultimately, could today’s challenges contribute to the development of a new language of architecture, one that would combine the poetic imagination, meaningful action, and a sustained pattern for practice that is relevant, artistic, and tangible?

FRIDAY SPEAKERS: Chris Benfey, Alejandro Zaera-Polo, Mark Wigley, Eric Höweler, Francesca Hughes

SATURDAY SPEAKERS: Alicia Imperiale, Antoine Picon, Sunil Bald, Teresa Stoppani, Ada Tolla and Giuseppe Lignano with Thomas de Monchaux, Cynthia Davidson

CONVENERS: Pari Riahi, Laure Katsaros, Michael Davis

From Umass Chancellor Subbaswamy’s letter to the campus community: “This week’s events in Minneapolis remind us just how far our country is from achieving anything close to equity and justice for all. We live in a time when intolerance, bigotry and xenophobia have become mainstream, even at the highest levels of our government. That is why it is so important that we stand united and reject racism and bigotry in all its forms. Although we acknowledge that our community is far from perfect, we must always strive to be better, to foster a community that is grounded in the concept of dignity and respect for all.” #blacklivesmatter #standtogether #umassamherst

Today the @aianational announced that the John W. Olver Design Building is one of the winners of the COTE Top Ten Awards - the industry’s best-known award program for sustainable design excellence!

Designed by @leers_weinzapfel, & with landscape design by @stimson the building was completed in 2017 and has gained significant attention for its sustainable and stylish design. At the time, it was the first and largest academic structure made of cross-laminated timber (CLT) in the US. The building is home to @umassarchitecture, @umasslarp & @umass_eco @sesumass BCT program.

Please help us welcome Rob Williams to the UMass Dept. of Architecture! Rob was a visiting lecturer for the last year & officially joined the faculty as an assistant professor this spring after a national search. Rob will continue to teach courses that focus on the intersection of landscape, urbanism, and architecture. He will also infuse his courses with insights into the role that details and building technology – particularly technology related to energy efficiency – play in the design process.
