Student Union Art Gallery

Student Union Art Gallery WE HAVE TEMPORARILY MOVED TO BARTLETT HALL RM 310 The Student Union Art Gallery is the oldest gallery on the University of Massachusetts Amherst campus.

Active since 1957, our organization strives to provide an opportunity for students, alumni, faculty, and visiting artists to present their work to the public in a professional and accessible manner. Working interactively with student organizations, campus departments, and professional artists, the Student Union Art Gallery provides an irreplaceable educational and cultural service. The Student Union Art Gallery is independent of residential area governments and academic departments. The gallery is generously funded by The Student Government Association (SGA) and the Graduate Student Senate (GSS), and through grants from the UMass Arts Council. Individual exhibitions may also receive additional support from sponsoring organizations or individual project grants. The Student Union Art Gallery is dedicated to four main goals: 1. Actively support and promote the expression of cultural multiplicity through programming that addresses a diversity of perspectives. 2. Provide a broad perspective of the contemporary art discourse by exhibiting work in a wide variety of media and formats by artists at all stages in their careers. 3. Expose inexperienced artists to the realities of public exhibition and/or performance. 4. Provide its undergraduate student staff opportunities to acquire skills important to work in arts administration, as well as the communication, customer-service, and task-management skills that translate across a number of career fields. The Student Union Art Gallery enthusiastically adheres to a policy of non-discrimination in all aspects of the organization.

~ Call for Art ~
People and The Environment

If you could speak to the Earth, what would you say?
If you could express it through Art, what would you create?
When you hear the word “nature”, what do you feel?
When you feel most connected to the environment, where are you?
How do you view the Earth we live in?
How do you envision the future of our Planet?
What world do you wish to live in?
Ever since beings have first inhabited its terrain, the world has provided us with a plethora of resources, rolling landscapes within all climates, a chance to form relationships with other organisms and much more. However, western ideologies deriving from the industrialization era triggered an environmental downfall for generations to come. Although interest in materialistic products and the mass market system stimulated the great trade of art, we have lost sight of the planet’s natural beauty and often take its generous offerings for granted.

This pop show is a chance for members of our community: local artists, students and anyone who shares a passion for the world we live in, to pay tribute to our Earth. We encourage artists to display the dynamic connection they feel with their ground and express it in any media they desire. Be creative, all are welcome to submit their work!

Exhibit Runs from 2/2/20 – 2/22/20

How is your art influenced by the World Wide Web? Are you a Cyborg yet? Are there ways in which you use art to cope with the rapidly changing, exponentially escalating shifts in culture that are a result of modern technologies? Can your media be “social” beyond its presence in social media? What does the Internet look like in your mind? It’s ten o’clock, do you know where your phone is? At all times? Always? We are the Robots? Are we creating the Internet as it creates us?

These are the prompts for this year’s annual Student Union Art Gallery (at Bartlett Hall) Pop Show… “Because the Internet…”

If you have answers to any of these questions in the form of art, we want it. ALL are welcome to submit. Submit your work by March 20th (you’ll be accepted or denied within three business days of submission), and if you’re admitted you’ll drop off your art by Friday, March 22nd. If you want to participate in install, you can join us 10am to 5pm Monday, March 25th. The closing reception will take place Thursday, April 4th, 5:30-7:30pm Bartlett Hall Rm 310.
