Those who missed the Women in Theatrical Design Lecture series presented earlier this semester by the Department of Theater can still view recordings of the event on the department's YouTube Channel. Four design professionals — Mimi Lien, Jane Cox, Jane Shaw, and Anita Yavich — gave presentations about their specific areas of theatrical design. Writer Sofia Sallaway asked our designers to reflect on what they got out of the series. Read her article and get a link to the playlist of the event recordings: https://www.umass.edu/theater/news/women-theatrical-design-recordings-available-youtube

If you were walking around on campus April 22-May 2, there's a possibility you came across one of our Monuments of the Future, moving installations/performances that explored what it means to create images that speak across time, and what it is we are memorializing. What inspired our graduate designers as they sought a subject for their thesis projects? A centuries-old epic was the basis for a striking new stop-motion short film. A Czech opera about animals and villagers prompted vibrantly imaginative costumes. And the drama playing out in the shadow of a majestic but devastated cathedral became a stunning scenic, costume and lighting exhibit.

This work, which premiered during our Rights of Spring Festival, is still up for viewing on our festival site: https://www.rightsofspringumass.com/graduate-student-exhibits

The UMass Department of Theater is proud to share that Professor Milan Dragicevich is one of two recipients of the 2021 College Outstanding Teacher Award from the College of Humanities and Fine Arts.
"I intuitively felt I had an exciting way to present lost knowledge, especially in earlier historical eras, where students from centuries past had access to a way of viewing the world that might be important today. I want to build a bridge between classical training and contemporary adaptation, incorporating the diverse range of backgrounds, voices, and cultures today," says Milan.

Every year, we give out the Denise Lessard Wagner Community Spirit Award to a handful of folks who went above and beyond in the way they were there for their community. This year, we awarded it to the entire senior class. They're amazing people who've completed their work under difficult circumstances and managed to find joy, creativity, and connection in spite of the obstacles. Congratulations to all of you!

It's day two of UMassGives and we're continuing to ask for your financial support as we strive to build back better in the wake of a challenging year. We've been so fortunate to have the support of friends, alumni, and community as we strove to find new ways of making art under difficult circumstances. Your support will enable us to keep innovating and finding ways toward a more accessible, inclusive, envelop-pushing theater. Thank you for your support. https://umass.scalefunder.com/gday/giving-day/33940/department/39964

Our Story

We create and produce high-caliber, professional, artistic creations on stage, telling human stories that connect audiences and performers in our increasingly mediatized world. We model and practice professional theater-making at every level of our teaching and production process.

As part of a large public university, we remain committed to accessibility and opportunities for all students.

Our excellent, high-caliber faculty marry the theoretical with the practical, guiding students to discover theatrical skills as well as life skills that serve them in the world of theater and beyond. The expertise of our faculty often engenders artistic projects and opportunities for our students, and they have opportunities to practice their budding professional skills and make artistic creations in official and less official spaces.

The spirit of mentorship permeates our department, and we tailor our teaching and advising to the specific needs and strengths of our students. We build teams in everything we do, teaching students the art of collaboration, working in groups, and tackling projects from start to finish.
