UMass Amherst Theater

UMass Amherst Theater What students learn in the classroom comes to life in our theaters, and we want the greater community to be part of our artistic community.

Theater is not a one-man show. We believe in collaboration, in pairing the freshest minds and newest ideas with wisdom and experience. Our productions work, because we work together. Come see for yourself!

How on earth do you teach the many very hands-on aspects of theater in an era of Zoom and social distancing? Theater folk put their creativity and problem-solving skills to work and make it happen. Check it this article from the The Valley Advocate's Chris Rohmann about that exact subject, featuring a number of current faculty members Gina Kaufmann and Amy Altadonna, as well as recent MFA grad Jennifer Onopa:

This gorgeous drop was part of the set Professor Anya Klepikov created for the Miami City Ballet's February production of The Firebird. When Klepikov isn't teaching scenic design to the graduate and undergraduate students in the Department of Theater, she's bringing her creative vision to set and costume designs for theater, opera, and ballet productions around the country. We interviewed her to find out how she meshes these two sides of her career, and how she approached designing Firebird.

Latinx Talk has been posting an essay every day since last Monday; Multicultural Theater Certificate director Dr. Priscilla Page was featured today with an essay about a play she and her students are particularly drawn to: Our Dad Is In Atlantis, written in Spanish by Mexican playwright Javier Malpica and translated by US-based playwright Jorge Ignacio Cortiñas about two brothers who cross the US-Mexico border in search of their father. Read it at this link:

The Zoom Where It Happens

How do you adapt performing and teaching theater, which is all about gathering in a room with collaborators and audiences, to a socially-distanced age? American Theatre interviewed a number of teacher-artists, including alumna Tanya Kane-Parry, about how they're adapting:

We're not medical personnel, but we do have skilled sewists like Assistant Costume Shop Manager Felicia Malachite and Costume Shop Manager Kristin Jensen who want to do their part to help in the crisis. These are masks that seem to help reduce the risk of transmission in the absence of an adequate supply of medical-grade personal protection equipment, so Felicia's put together a tutorial on how to sew them.

Coronavirus Update

UMass Department of Theater
Coronavirus (COVID-19) FAQ

Q: Are the department’s classes being canceled?
All in-person classes will be suspended through at least 4/3 and replaced with on-line instruction. The department will observe spring break 3/15-3/22 with classes resuming on-line on Monday, 3/23. If an evaluation of the situation requires the University to extend on-line instruction beyond 4/3 students, faculty, and staff will be notified by the University by 4/1.
Instructors will be in touch with their students via UMass email with information about how their specific courses will be conducted and with updated syllabi.
International Students who must remain on campus because of extenuating circumstances will also receive on-line instructions and will be subject to the same restrictions as all other students.

Q: Are department events being canceled?
All public events scheduled by the Department of Theater are canceled through 4/3.
This includes the Rand Lecture with Theresa Rebeck originally scheduled for March 26, which is cancelled and will be rescheduled for a later date.

Q: What will happen with Mr. Burns?
We have realized that, even if we return to campus in early April, we will not have enough time to feasibly mount a fully-produced show. We have therefore canceled the scheduled main stage public run of Mr. Burns for this April (including the student matinee). We will relaunch the same production in the fall, with the same artistic team and same company to the extent possible. A fully-produced Mr. Burns will be the opening show of our 2020-21 season. We will contact ticketholders about ticket refund and transfer options at a future date.

Q: What should I do about my Mr. Burns tickets?
We follow the policy of the Fine Arts Center box office regarding ticketed events. ( https://fac.umass.edu/Online/default.asp?BOparam::WScontent::loadArticle::permalink=Covid19&BOparam::WScontent::loadArticle::context_id= )
Ticket holders will be contacted separately regarding refunds. We also offer the following alternative options, and invite our community to consider these options as a way to support our organization during this challenging time:
You may exchange the value of your tickets for a gift certificate to be used at a later time with the FAC box office
You may donate the value of your tickets as a much-appreciated gift to the Department of Theater

Q: Are tours available for prospective students and other visitors?
Not at this time. Please check back for information about when these will resume. In the meantime, faculty and staff are available by email if you have questions about our program.

Q: What about our Fringe Festival of student work?
The end of our semester has been reserved for a Fringe Festival of student work. Some productions may be affected even if we are able to return in April, so we recommend checking in with the individual productions to learn their status.

Q: Will graduation and year-end events be affected?
Updates on end-of-the-semester events and commencement will be provided as decisions are made based on unfolding circumstances.

As always, the safety of our community remains our top priority. There is an understandably high level of concern as the coronavirus (COVID-19) spreads, and we, along with UMass Amherst, are closely monitoring this evolving situation. On March 11, the University announced that after Spring Break, ca...

Throwing it back to a few months ago when Water Station was under construction to point out something cool: The materials you see here that went into Water Station are recycled. Reusing and recycling makes financial and environmental sense in our shop, and it feels especially good to be able to walk our talk on a production that is in part about scarce resources. Come see Water Station tonight or tomorrow, or visit us next week! #umass #umasstheater #theater #theatre #waterstation

The Legacy of Donny Johns | Department of Theater | UMass Amherst

Five years ago, UMass Theater premiered a musical called Donny Johns, loosely based on the Don Juan story, that was created by professors Harley Erdman and Gina Kaufmann, with composer Aaron Jones. A lot has happened in the intervening 5 years, not least a name change to Legacy Boy. Catch up with the creators and characters in a story on our News page!

When faculty take interesting work assignments out of town, they often try to create opportunities for their students and mentees — to wit, Anya Klepikov, who brought three current and former students on board when she designed costumes and scenery for the new Firebird ballet put on by the Miami City Ballet.

Stagestruck: The Shape of Silence

Next week, we open Water Station. Rarely produced in this country, it offers theater-making that is based in an Asian approach to the art form. The Valley Advocate's Chris Rohmann visited a rehearsal to learn more and wrote this story:
https://valleyadvocate.com/2020/02/18/stagestruck-the-shape-of-silence/

In 1981, Ota Shogo had a vision: “A broken faucet center stage. A thin line of water from the spout. The sound of water. A variety of people come by, approach, touch the water, and pass on. In this composition, silence breathes as living human time, not as form.” From these images came "The Wate...

Our Story

We're excited! Over the past few seasons, our focus has been on exploring new works and crafting original takes on classics, sparking vital conversations among artists and audiences alike as we build our community.

The 2018-2019 season connects us as theater-makers and -experiencers not just in the present day, but with others throughout time. Whether they live in the past, present, or future, the characters in our upcoming plays grapple with the same issues that matter to us today, on this campus and in this valley, in ways that clarify our own perspectives and spark reflection.

We hope you come travel through time with us in the 2018-2019 season!
