Big thank you to our community's very own Amherst Fire Department and Dunn & Phillips, P.C. for putting on such an informative fire safety seminar yesterday. Specifically, the Brothers of Theta Mu would like to thank Amy Mottor of Dunn and Phillips and the 3 professionals from Amherst Fire: Asst. Fire Chief Lindsay Stromgren, firefighter JP Kennedy, and Capt. John Ingram for their time yesterday. If you have any interest in joining AFD’s student force, or want to learn more about it, check out their website (https://www.amherstma.gov/2176/Student-Force) for more information!

It was our last AFD seminar of the semester and it went off without a hitch!

A Little Easier Recovery

As part of Breast Cancer Awareness Month the brothers of Pi Kappa Alpha would like to recognize brother Sean Patrick's mother, Cathy McGrath and her non-profit company A Little Easier Recovery which was recently recognized on Beyoncé's website. Her product, the Jacki was designed to restore dignity and comfort to men and women (like herself) who had post-surgical drains, which are often painful and heavy. We honor the McGrath family for their perseverance through hard times and praise Mrs. McGrath for her dedication to helping countless others.

October is Breast Cancer Awareness month. Every Wednesday of the month, we will be highlighting the stories of those who have had their lives affected by breast cancer. These are just 5 stories of 5 exceptional people in a sea of millions. About 1 in 8 U.S. women and roughly 1 in 1,000 U.S. men will…

General information

The Pi Kappa Alpha Fraternity was founded at the University of Virginia on March 1, 1868. At the time, the University of Virginia was the fifth largest school in the United States, and was considered the first truly American state university, because it was the first to be established free from religious control. It all started in Room 47 West Range when Frederick Southgate Taylor turned to Littleton Waller Tazewell, his cousin and roommate, for help in starting a new fraternity. Also present were James Benjamin Sclater, Jr., a schoolmate of Tazewell, and Sclater's roommate, Robertson Howard. Those four men voted to add a fifth to their group and chose Julian Edward Wood. In addition, William Alexander, probably a friend of Sclater, was proposed for membership and admitted as a founder. The essence of the Founders' vision for Pi Kappa Alpha can be found in its Preamble. A committee was first suggested by Brother William Alexander "to draw up a statement of the origin and the organization of the Fraternity." The committee was composed of brothers Robertson Howard and Littleton Waller Tazewell. The resulting statement is now referred to as the Preamble. "For the establishment of friendship on a firmer and more lasting basis; for the promotion of brotherly love and kind feeling; for the mutual benefit and advancement of the interests of those with whom we sympathize and deem worthy of our regard; We have resolved to form a fraternity, believing that, thus we can most successfully accomplish our object."
