Contribute Materials to the Hampshire College Archives!

In collaboration with Librarians, the Archives Alumni Fellow at Hampshire College Library is seeking donations of materials related to the current situation here at Hampshire College. Since our College Archivist position has not been funded since 2016, we need your help more than ever to make sure that this moment is documented from a variety of perspectives.

If you are a: Student, Staff or Faculty Member, Administrator, or Alum....

We are seeking: meeting minutes, notes, presentations, buttons, photographs, flyers, posters, video files, audio recordings, screenshots of social media posts, and more...anything that will give future researchers a glimpse into what it was like to live through these last few weeks (and months).

You can send digital files as attachments to: [email protected]...please provide as much background info, dates, etc. as you feel comfortable sharing, in the body of the email.

For physical materials, you can email [email protected]...and the Archives Fellow and/or Social Sciences Librarian will help you with the process.

Please note that while it is imperative to collect materials and document this moment, these materials will NOT be open for research in the near future. Collections such as this one require quite a bit of record-keeping and organization behind the scenes, for the privacy of individuals involved, for reasons of copyright, and for the long-term stability of the documents. We remind you that there is no College Archivist here to do this important work. Archives exist to preserve evidence of historic events for the extreme long-term, so consider your donation a gift to help facilitate future generations' research about this moment in time. (And make sure to keep a copy of anything you know you'll want to access soon.)

We are ALSO eager to discuss responsible and engaging ways to share and process this moment in more immediate ways, so please let us know your ideas.

As with all archival collections containing information about living individuals, when you donate materials, you are free to tell us what future level of access you'd like to attach to anything you donate. For example, some files can be by permission only, others can be restricted for a certain number of years, and others can have names redacted. We can discuss specifics as needed.

If you have questions about which digital file formats are best to send along, or other questions about this project, please email us at [email protected].

On March 5th and 6,th In Paris, London, Venice, Baghdad, San Francisco, New York, Dubai, Vancouver, and over 30 other cities and towns across the world, readings are being held on the 10th anniversary of the bombing of Al-Mutanabbi Street in Baghdad, a centuries old street of literary culture that was destroyed that day by a car bomb.

In Amherst, this event is taking place at the Hampshire College Library in the Gallery at 4pm on Monday, March 6th.

We invite all community members, students, faculty and staff, to join an hour of open mic readings focusing on war, cultural destruction, and the role of the artist in exploring these issues. Please come and bring a poem or passage to read, or just come to listen.
