Hi FRN!

Friendly update from the board! We realize classes end Wednesday, December 11th, and students need to prioritize time for finals and mental health, so starting Thursday, December 12th, all deliveries are cancelled for the remainder of the semester. If you were signed up for a delivery on or after December 12th, you are free to study or relax! We appreciate all the work everyone puts in. If there are any more announcements, this semester, we'll let you know!

Best wishes,
The FRN Board

North Village Residents

North Village Residents

This page is created by the residents of North Village family housing. On September 5, 2019, two days after the new semester starts, UMass Amherst sent out a letter to inform the NV residents about the decision to demolish the family housing complex. Without providing any detailed plan or prior consultation with the current residents, the school had made the decision unjustly to push forward a public-private partnership which completely ignores the needs of the community. Given most of the residents here are international students and student parents, the 9 month eviction note did nothing but cause great anxiety among the community. For many of us, family housing is more than a housing arrangement but a precious community where we feel safe and have a sense of belonging. If you think UMass Amherst can do better in supporting NV residents, please like our page and share.

North Village Residents

We received a powerful letter from a former resident. Maizy is 9 year old and lived in North Village from age 3 to 7. Thanks to North village family housing, Maizy’s Mom was able to finish her undergraduate and masters. Maizy wants to make sure the admin of UMass see her letter. Would you help her spread the word?

Check out this awesome video of E-board members Erica and Mia describing what we do, and why! Video by the School of Public Health and Health Sciences.

We are half way through National Public Health Week! Today we celebrate a group of nutrition students combating food waste and insecurity by volunteering their time to share left over food from UMass Amherst dining halls with those who could use the additional meal.
The UMASS Amherst Food Recovery Network is open to students from all majors and only takes about 20 minutes a week to participate in.

‼️URGENT‼️

A houseless person of color who has been repeatedly assaulted and harassed by the Northampton Police Department needs funds so that them and their family can survive. They’ve been subjected to some really hard times lately with the snow and the cold. Everyone deserve housing and safety. No one is disposable and families belong together. It’s REALLY important that those of us who have financial resources support our community members who are targeted by state violence. We need to raise at least $2500.

One of the many reasons why we recover food is to reduce the amount of food that ends up in landfills. If not composted, methane (more than 30 times more potent than carbon dioxide) is released and of course, contributes to global warming. Please join UMass dining at Hampshire DC on Tuesday, Nov. 27th from 5-8 pm in the fight against this problem. We'll be eating a delicious low carbon meal while learning about more sustainable ways to eat and protect the planet!

tonight we delivered a bunch of food to the families from Puerto Rico staying in the Quality Inn in Northampton, but the 2 meals we bring per week barely makes a dent in the struggles these families are facing- and to make matters worse the FEMA voucher that allows these families to stay in hotels is set to expire on April 20th, so we are urging you to call the Massachusetts senators to ask that they meet with these families to figure out a solution so that they do not end up homeless on April 21st. If you believe in food recovery - redistributing food to those who need it - then you should also care about finding homes, because there are enough resources across the state to redistribute a little bit to ensure that our fellow US citizens (sometimes people forget that Puerto Rico is a part of the US!) can and should have homes and dignity after all that they lost in hurricane Maria and the aftermath (during which the government did not support Puerto Rico’s recovery, so the least we can do is urge our representatives to make sure that the people who had to leave everything behind are not left homeless) #6MonthsAfterMaria #HomesNotHotels #BoricuasSonAmericanos

Sign up for a recovery on our sign up sheet, show up at the dining hall at 8:45 pm (we do Worcester and Berk so there are 2 tabs on the sign up sheet), and help record the temperature and weight of the food, load it into bags, and load them into the car. Recoveries from Worcester Dining Commons usually take less than 20 minutes. We deliver to Craig's Doors, which is right next to the visitor center parking lot.

Recoveries from Berk on Sundays and Thursdays take about 45 minutes because we deliver to the Quality Inn in Northampton for families from Puerto Rico staying there on a FEMA voucher after Hurricane Maria. You can also just sign up to help load the car if you have 10 minutes and don't want to drive all the way to Northampton - that's also super helpful!

From Berk on Tuesdays it also takes only 20 minutes because we deliver to Not Bread Alone downtown.

With your continued support, we can expand to other dining halls and other sites that host community meals!!!

“Fighting waste, feeding people”

The Food Recovery Network at UMass facilitates the donation of otherwise wasted food from Worcester dining commons to Craig's Doors Homeless Shelter in Amherst, and from Berkshire Dining Commons to Not Bread Alone and a dinner in Northampton for people dislocated by Hurricane Maria. Through mobilizing the campus community as volunteers, FRN helps to spread hunger and waste awareness among the students, faculty, and town. Like to help? Sign up to volunteer, like our page for updates, and feel free to reach out to us with any questions, comments, concerns, or to get on our email list!

Most recoveries only take less than 30 minutes. It is a quick and fun way to help out!
