This week, Governor Baker announced a new series of targeted measures to curb rising COVID-19 cases in Massachusetts, which go into effect this Friday. They are as follows:

▶️ Stay at Home Advisory: Residents are instructed to stay home between 10 p.m. and 5 a.m., but activities such as going to work (including research activities), picking up take-out meals, getting groceries, and addressing health needs are allowed. This advisory prohibits any gatherings in residence halls, apartments or homes between 10 p.m. and 5 a.m. (not including those who live with you).

▶️ Early Closure of Businesses and Activities: Dine-in service will end in all UMass Dining locations at 9:30 p.m.; grab-and-go meals will be served from 9:30 p.m. until the facilities close.

▶️ Face Coverings: Everyone on and off campus must wear face coverings in all public places, including outdoors, even where they are able to maintain 6 feet of distance from others.

▶️ Gatherings: At private residences, gatherings must end and disperse by 9:30 p.m. Indoor gatherings are restricted to 10 or fewer people; outdoor gatherings are restricted to 25 or fewer people; and organizers are required to cooperate with contact tracing.

Please remember that the actions we take now impact our ability to open more fully in the future. It's hard, but it helps. Thank you.

LAST CHANCE: MA Voter Reg Deadline 10/24

Saturday October 24th is the MA deadline to register or update your voter registration status in order to be ready to vote in the upcoming local, state, and federal elections of 2020. That means
if you live in a different place (on campus, at your home address, etc) than you did when you last registered to vote or voted, you should update your registration to include your current address.

REGISTER TO VOTE: Register for the first time, or update your address on your voter registration status here before midnight on Saturday October 24th

https://studentvote.org/

As the largest and most diverse generation alive right now, young people have a chance to make a real impact in Massachusetts and our country if every eligible voter participates in the election. This year, every eligible voter in MA can vote by mail if they choose to, or they can vote early at their town's specific "early voting location", or show up on Election Day, Tues Nov 3rd. For more information see the state's website here

https://www.sec.state.ma.us/ele/

Already registered? Make a plan to vote here to make sure you can cast your ballot before or on Election Day.

https://actionnetwork.org/forms/make-a-plan-to-vote-15

Creating a plan to vote is one of the best ways to make sure you cast your ballot. It’s time we show the country that young people are America’s largest generation, and we vote!

Living off campus in the Amherst area? This is your official reminder to get tested twice a week.

Asymptomatic tests are free, available M-F, offered via drive-through or right in Mullins, and can be scheduled through the Campus Health Hub. Parking at Mullins is free, too.

The work of planning for the spring semester is under way, and the next several weeks may play a significant role in shaping the decisions we make. Thank you for doing your part to keep our community safe.

How to Bounce

"Resilience—once a trait for gurus and yoga classes—has come to be seen by academics and scientists as an important life skill. Genevieve “Ginny” Chandler, a professor in the College of Nursing, defines resilience as “recognizing your internal and external supports to manage stress,” and she has spent more than two decades studying the nuances and complexities within that simple definition. As interest has grown in what constitutes resilience and how one might cultivate it, Chandler’s long-standing research focus is fast becoming an educational precept. Now her techniques for building resilience are empowering UMass students with a new set of skills that will strengthen them for a lifetime."

ENGIN 597E: Equity & Inclusion in Engineering Education - Challenges and Opportunities

Tuesdays 11:30 - 12:45 Starting September 1st.

This seminar reviews domain literature concerning best practices in diversity, inclusion, and pedagogy, while connecting these topics to the engineering classroom, research and workplace environments. Starting with core literature and examples from engineering, other technical/scientific fields, and education, participants will engage in critical discussion about Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM) STEM identity, hidden curriculum and unspoken culture, institutional inclusivity (or lack of), inclusive design and socially engaged engineering, and what it means to be a 21st Century Leader. Through conversations, reflections, and participatory actions, this course will explore historical and current issues with the intention of creating an equitable landscape moving forward. Audit and/or non-credit participants, including faculty and staff, are welcome through instructor permission (Dr. Paula Rees, [email protected]).
