UMass Fine Arts Center For over 40 years, enlivening, entertaining, and inspiring the Pioneer Valley and beyond with an array of performances, exhibitions, and educational programs.
(71)

The Fine Arts Center in Amherst offers a variety of stellar performing arts, visual arts, and education programs which create a unique opportunity to experience the arts in the Pioneer Valley. Performing arts specialties for the Center Series include classical music, jazz, world music, popular music, traditional, classical and modern dance, theater, and family programming representing artists from around the globe. The Asian Arts & Culture Program presents artists from throughout the Asian and Middle Eastern Diaspora. The Solos & Duos/Magic Triangle Series present artists within the avant-garde jazz idiom. The Fine Arts Center gives western MA residents, students and families the opportunity to experience the best in music and performance art within their community. Visual arts are presented through the Hampden and Augusta Savage Galleries, and the University Museum of Contemporary Art. Each of these spaces on the UMass Amherst Campus promote artistic works from a broad spectrum of cultures focusing on issues of race, ethnicity, class, and cultural identity, to reflect current practices in contemporary art across all genres, and offer a multidisciplinary, international laboratory for the exploration and advancement of contemporary art. The FAC provides education programs that deepen appreciation, understanding and knowledge of the arts making it a critical site for experiential student learning in the arts, creative community engagement, educational collaboration, and artistic exploration. These programs include the Arts Council, Global Arts for School Children, Jazz in July and Lively Arts. Combined, these programs fulfill the mission of the FAC and the University to provide affordable access to high quality arts programming, through engagement in public service that advances knowledge and improves lives. History Established in 1975. The Fine Arts Center (FAC) in Amherst opened as a campus concert center and art gallery in 1975, and has since earned a local reputation as a central force in the cultural, social and academic life of this western Massachusetts community. Over the years, the FAC has played a unique role in serving the broad cultural and educational needs of the campus, the Five College Consortium, and regional communities in the Pioneer Valley. Over the years the FAC's role in western MA has evolved into much more than just a venue for the arts. Each season, an average of 80 - 90 exhibitions, music, dance, and theater events are programmed along with educational and residency activities that include master classes, lectures, demonstrations and pre- and post-performance discussions, open to the western MA community. Since 1993 the Asian Arts and Culture Program has ensured that community residents have access to performers and artists beyond the traditions of western art, music and culture.

Mirror Mirror: The Prints of Alison Saar

Tonight at 5PM, UMCA hosts an opening reception to celebrate Mirror Mirror: The Prints of Alison Saar. Alison Saar is known not only for her powerful sculptures; she is also a master of the art of printmaking. In both forms, she employs a personal vocabulary informed by history, race, and mythology. Her influences range from ancient Europe, Africa, and American folk art.

Prints and sculptures by the artist Alison Saar. Saar’s works narrate stories of the African American experience, moving effortlessly from the personal to the political. In many of her works, she charts the tragic history of slavery in America, but her figures symbolize defiance and strength.

"Sunsets bring joy and calm to my life. I love watching the sky go dark even on gray days because taking time to observe nature and quiet my thoughts is a welcome change from technology and constant distractions. I especially love to capture vibrant sunsets on camera, and often use those colors to inspire paintings or other creative projects."

"My little things this season are pictured here. One is our new tiny, non-denominational holiday tree (Norfolk Pine, so indoors). We wanted something living as a reminder of everything we should give thanks for year-round, but traditional enough that we could hang lights and a couple of DIY ornaments on it. It sits on our dining table in front of our living room window as a beautiful constant throughout our day.

The other item is the brand-new book on the Heart Sutra, one of Buddhism's most important texts, written by popular Asian cultural expert and my friend, Alex Kerr. The chapters are concise, witty, and full of engaging stories. Happy Holidays, everyone!"

"Baking and baking bread in particular since I was gifted a sourdough start has brought me much joy this year at home. The process & sourdough maintenance is a bit tedious but what I really appreciate is that it slows my mind down and gives me much-needed screen breaks. Now at LEAST 50 loaves away from the first one which I had no idea how to shape, I can’t imagine our house without fresh bread every week!"

"Since 2016 I have been in a songwriting group with three songwriters and friends. Every two weeks a prompt is provided, and we separately write, record, and post the new song in a private Facebook group. Over the last 5 years, I have personally written 115 songs.

During the pandemic, my childhood friend Jay Misrahi expressed interest in collaboratively writing songs with me. We used to be in touch once every few months. Now we have a zoom call once a week to work out the logistics of the song, talk music, and life. Occasionally it all ends up in the song."

CALL FOR PRODUCERS AND DIRECTORS! In alliance with UMass Students for Reproductive Justice, we are producing our annual show, Nostras Voces (Our Voices), a multi-media art show and performance to uplift marginalized student voices. Auditions would start in November and we would be practicing twice a week until our performances in February. No experience needed, we aim to be a collaborative, explorative, and inclusive art process. If you have any additional inquiries feel free to message me or email [email protected]
I absolutely love the fine arts center, I'm so excited to see the upcoming exhibits! Since everyone here is so creatively inclined, I just wanted to share a film I read about on Variety called "Empathy, Inc". I recently saw the trailer and thought it looked like a brilliant combination of cinematography and screenwriting. It's actually a science-fiction thriller about a man that becomes involved in a virtual reality startup company, but it also tells a complex story about morality and privilege. The movie comes out on VOD on September 24th, but I'd love to hear your thoughts about the trailer!
