The Fine Arts Center in Amherst offers a variety of stellar performing arts, visual arts, and education programs which create a unique opportunity to experience the arts in the Pioneer Valley. Performing arts specialties for the Center Series include classical music, jazz, world music, popular music, traditional, classical and modern dance, theater, and family programming representing artists from around the globe. The Asian Arts & Culture Program presents artists from throughout the Asian and Middle Eastern Diaspora. The Solos & Duos/Magic Triangle Series present artists within the avant-garde jazz idiom. The Fine Arts Center gives western MA residents, students and families the opportunity to experience the best in music and performance art within their community. Visual arts are presented through the Hampden and Augusta Savage Galleries, and the University Museum of Contemporary Art. Each of these spaces on the UMass Amherst Campus promote artistic works from a broad spectrum of cultures focusing on issues of race, ethnicity, class, and cultural identity, to reflect current practices in contemporary art across all genres, and offer a multidisciplinary, international laboratory for the exploration and advancement of contemporary art. The FAC provides education programs that deepen appreciation, understanding and knowledge of the arts making it a critical site for experiential student learning in the arts, creative community engagement, educational collaboration, and artistic exploration. These programs include the Arts Council, Global Arts for School Children, Jazz in July and Lively Arts. Combined, these programs fulfill the mission of the FAC and the University to provide affordable access to high quality arts programming, through engagement in public service that advances knowledge and improves lives. History Established in 1975. The Fine Arts Center (FAC) in Amherst opened as a campus concert center and art gallery in 1975, and has since earned a local reputation as a central force in the cultural, social and academic life of this western Massachusetts community. Over the years, the FAC has played a unique role in serving the broad cultural and educational needs of the campus, the Five College Consortium, and regional communities in the Pioneer Valley. Over the years the FAC's role in western MA has evolved into much more than just a venue for the arts. Each season, an average of 80 - 90 exhibitions, music, dance, and theater events are programmed along with educational and residency activities that include master classes, lectures, demonstrations and pre- and post-performance discussions, open to the western MA community. Since 1993 the Asian Arts and Culture Program has ensured that community residents have access to performers and artists beyond the traditions of western art, music and culture.

Ananya Dance Theatre

Next week during Bodies at Risk: Jawole Willa Jo Zollar & Ananya Chatterjea, we'll see and hear more about the next installment of Ananya Dance Theatre's "Dastak" dance film project. Tune in for this live conversation 10/14!

"Dastak: I Wish You Me" will be our evening-length dance work about home, belonging, borders, boundaries, and loss. The Farsi word Dastak means knockings, and the dance traces the knockings of global injustices on our hearts through four sections: Earth, Water, Fire, and Air.
Until we can meet you in live performance next year, we offer the spirit of those sections in four films, beginning with this iteration of "Earth," filmed at Coldwater Spring, Minnesota.
Created by filmmaker Darren Johnson, choreographer Ananya Chatterjea, composer Dameun Strange, textual magicmaker Sharon Bridgforth, performers অনন্যা ΰ¦šΰ¦Ÿΰ§ΰ¦Ÿΰ§‹ΰ¦ͺাধ্যায়, Kealoha Ferreira, Alexandra Eady, RenΓ©e Copeland, Julia Gay, Lizzette Marie Chapa, Parisha Rajbhandari, Nakita Kirchner, Noelle Awadallah, Fei Bi Chan.

I absolutely love the fine arts center, I'm so excited to see the upcoming exhibits! Since everyone here is so creatively inclined, I just wanted to share a film I read about on Variety called "Empathy, Inc". I recently saw the trailer and thought it looked like a brilliant combination of cinematography and screenwriting. It's actually a science-fiction thriller about a man that becomes involved in a virtual reality startup company, but it also tells a complex story about morality and privilege. The movie comes out on VOD on September 24th, but I'd love to hear your thoughts about the trailer!
