The AC Dems are excited to see who is going to win the Iowa Caucuses tonight! And we can't wait to put in the work to support whoever wins the nomination
The Amherst College Democrats are the official representative body of the Democratic Party at Amherst College.
Operating as usual
The AC Dems are excited to see who is going to win the Iowa Caucuses tonight! And we can't wait to put in the work to support whoever wins the nomination
The results from Kentucky and Virginia today show that when we organize and fight, we win. Congrats to Governor-elect Beshear and the new Democratic Majorities in VA! We can’t wait to see all the progress you’ll bring!
A mammoth thank you to Congressman Jim McGovern and Ro Khanna for a great town hall tonight! Glad that ACDems Harry and Hayley could get a photo with the two of you too (and with UDems friends like Tim and Carla!)
So proud of all the ACDems members who led today’s #ClimateStrike. Olivia and Cole, thank you for all your work! And thank you to all the Amherst students who came out to show that our generation will not sit by in the face of the climate crisis. #FridaysforFuture #StrikeForClimate
When young people are engaged and turn out to vote, we can truly make a difference. We’re going to work in 2020 to make sure that these numbers keep going up!
MEDFORD/SOMERVILLE, Mass. (Sept. 19, 2019)—College-student voting rates in the 2018 midterm elections doubled compared to the 2014 midterms, marking a watershed election year for student voter turnout, according to a report today from the Institute for Democracy & Higher Education (IDHE) at Tufts ...
ACDems had a great time yesterday at the NHDems convention in Manchester! We got to hear from over a dozen candidates, and many of our members got the chance to meet them one on one! Come to our intro meeting tonight at 8:00 in the McCaffrey Room of Keefe Campus Center to hear more about our time in NH and to learn more about ACDems!
Quick note: The Amherst College Democrats are not endorsing anyone in the primary, but we encourage all of our members to find candidates they like and to vocally support them (as seen below!)
Ben and Hayley working at our table during the Get Involved Fair today! We were glad to get so many new members, and can’t wait to fight for progressive change this year!
Joe Walsh might be challenging Donald Trump in the primary, but he’d hardly be an improvement as President. Walsh has repeatedly tweeted out racial slurs, called the science around climate change “inconclusive,” believes there shouldn’t be a social safety net because it’s not in the Constitution, and called the LGBT community “constitutional terrorists.”
Being a critic of the President does *not* automatically make someone a viable replacement!

Having a white nationalist as President emboldens other white nationalists to commit acts of violence, it’s that simple. And in recent years, the Republican Party has continued to enable them. What happened today in El Paso is a reminder of why we need both comprehensive gun control, and a serious plan to tackle domestic white nationalist terrorism.
Florida Governor Ron DeSantis is working hard to keep Floridians from voting, but Andrew Gillum is working even harder to make sure everyone has fair access to the ballot box.
Read what he has to say about what we can do to help:
Last night was one of the darkest days in Florida history.
CDA Statement on Nationwide Anti-Abortion Legislation
These dangerous abortion bans exemplify how Donald Trump’s extremist policies have emboldened lawmakers to put women’s lives at risk.

Thank you to everyone who came out tonight to hear Rhiana Gunn-Wright speak about the Green New Deal! Despite the rain, over two hundred people made their way to Johnson Chapel to learn about why the Green New Deal is such an important way to look at tackling climate change. We hope that everyone came away with a clearer understanding of why the Green New Deal is the way it is, and that this Earth Day gave you some added motivation to fight for climate justice! A big thanks to our partners from the Amherst College Office of Environmental Sustainability, we couldn’t have done it without you!
Delighted to see that this necessary piece of legislation has been signed into law! Thank you Mindy Domb, State Representative, 3rd Hampshire District, MA and Jo Comerford for working to pass this!
We just learned that Gov. Baker has signed the bill to ban conversion therapy in Massachusetts!!! Congrats and thank you to everyone who has called and emailed your state legislators to get this through! ❤️❤️❤️🏳️🌈🏳️🌈🏳️🌈
We had a great time hearing from Clare Malone tonight! She had so much to teach us about identity politics and how we saw these dynamics play out in the past few elections. Thank you for everyone who came out tonight and everyone who asked great questions
We had the opportunity to attend a Town Hall about the Green New Deal with Senator Edward J. Markey and Congressman Jim McGovern. Their hope and optimism were a refreshing sign that we can and will take action on climate change.
We want to express our horror and devastation at seeing what happened in Christchurch New Zealand. Yesterday’s events are a reminder of the rising prevalence of white-nationalism and Islamaphobia across the world, and remind us that we must double down in the fight against bigotry and hatred.
To the Muslim members of the Amherst College community, we understand how you are feeling. We extend our deepest condolences and sympathies.
We want to echo the sentiments of President Martin, that Amherst College should be a community where everyone feels safe and welcome, and we are committed to making sure that that sentiment is not an empty promise.
We’re so glad Representative Mindy Domb came to our weekly meeting to talk with us about this legislative session and the bills she’s supporting. It’s great to have representatives who are so accessible and willing to meet with groups like ours. Thanks again Mindy Domb, State Representative, 3rd Hampshire District, MA!!
Congresswoman Ayanna Pressley speaking at the Every Voice Advocacy Summit. She reminded us that “you do not need a fancy title or a comma next to your name to effectuate change.” Thank you to Congresswoman Pressley and the Every Voice Coalition for your hard work and advocacy.
So great to have the opportunity to speak with Senator Jo Comerford about the Massachusetts legislature and the bills she’s planning to support!

HORRIFYING. This conduct is despicable, heartless, cruel. As inhabitants of this country, we must confront our responsibility in this abuse. Seeking asylum is a lawful pursuit; reckless abuse like this should not be.
BREAKING: Trump's border patrol just sprayed innocent women and young children with tear gas. Dozens of young children are collapsing from not being able to breathe but are being refused medical help. What have we become?
Anti-Black police violence. Devastating in all forms but strikingly so here.
Here is a long report discussing steps we can take as residents in this country: Building Momentum from the Ground Up: A Toolkit for Justice in Policing (http://populardemocracy.org/sites/default/files/Justice-In-Policing-Toolkit-sm.pdf)
Here is a summation of that report: https://mic.com/articles/121572/15-things-your-city-can-do-right-now-to-end-police-brutality#.ArFgB7gvB
The suggestions in this report are actionable, only if we pressure our elected officials to commit to these policy/practice changes or if we run ourselves!

Representative Ro Khanna forcefully confronts Congress about our complicity with Saudi Arabia's genocide in Yemen. How will we Democrats heed his important call?
House Republicans have quashed debate on a resolution that aims to end U.S. military support for the Saudi-led war in Yemen, by sneaking a single line into an unrelated resolution about wolves. The House voted 201 to 187 on the bill Wednesday, approving a provision that blocks the Democrats from for...
The answer seems clear!
Image: a scatter plot showing the rate of guns compared to the mass shooters in different countries. The United States' dot falls far above all other countries.
Americans advance a lot of theories for why they have so many more gun deaths than other countries do. The answer is lying in plain sight.

A white man with a history of violence fatally shot two African-American customers at a Kroger grocery store and was arrested as he tried to flee, police said.
A lesson from Georgia/Brian Kemp: When you can't win based on your ideas, you have to control voter registration and use machines so outdated that they miraculously choose your candidate over the opponent.
