Spanish Studies Abroad (CC-CS)

Spanish Studies Abroad (CC-CS) Study abroad and cultural travel programs in the Spanish-speaking world: Spain, Argentina, Cuba, and Puerto Rico For 50 years, Spanish Studies Abroad (CC-CS) has invited students to expand their world views through participating in short- and long-term, for credit academic programs in Spain, Argentina, Puerto Rico, and Cuba.
(6)

We design these programs for our more than 70 affiliate U.S. universities, and students from other institutions.

Mission: The mission of Spanish Studies Abroad is to promote our students’ in-depth understanding of Spanish-speaking countries through specifically designed and academically rigorous university-level and cultural travel programs. All of our students cross cultural boundaries to live as members of another culture and thus to learn about others as they learn about themselves. Diversity Statement: Spanish Studies Abroad believes that a diverse student body enriches each individual experience by guiding students to learn about others as they learn about themselves. In accordance with our mission to encourage our students to cross cultural boundaries, Spanish Studies Abroad promotes equal opportunities within our programs and does not discriminate on the basis of an individual's race, religion, ethnicity, national origin, age, physical ability, gender, sexual orientation, or other characteristics. We believe in educating students on cultural tolerance and sensitivity, acceptance of differences, inclusiveness, and how diversity is viewed in other cultures.

Danielle Franke reflects on her summer internship at Centro Médico Estación in Alicante, Spain:

“Throughout my time at this clinic, I improved my ability to comprehend and add to conversations in Spanish, and I learned many new Spanish medical terms. While I learned a lot in the Spanish classes I took in the U.S., being immersed in the language and surrounded by native speakers challenged me and allowed me to pick up more of the language in a short time.”

Although we won’t be offering internships in Spring 2021 programs, we WILL be offering •Spanish for the Health Professions• virtually during the winter term. Check the link to get more details!

“Spanish studies really helped get me out of my comfort zone. Compared to other programs SSA forces you to really be
involved in the Spanish culture on many ways. While other programs provided trips around the EU we took trips throughout Catalunya and learned their history. I was highly encouraged in program gatherings to speak as much Spanish as possible without feeling uncomfortable”

"The New Normal" - Many of you may be wondering, what does studying abroad in Spain look like right now? The University of Alicante shares photos of their Erasmus students (international students from Europe) this semester in Alicante. Fortunately, beautiful Mediterreanean weather means students can still enjoy a number of outdoor and socially-distanced activities in addition to their studies at the university.

To learn more about Covid protocols across all our sites for next semester, register for our next info session this Thursday (link to register: forms.gle/nfyZ5kDp2MMmt95r7). You'll hear from onsite staff on what to expect next semester while abroad and have the opportunity to ask questions.

Damos la bienvenida a Adriana Pajares, our Barcelona Resident Director! She shares with us how she has adjusted to the current circumstances and how COVID has impacted life in Barcelona.

How's the situation in your city?
We're taking it little by little in Barcelona. Some days it seems like it's getting better and others not as much.

What restrictions are there?
Masks are required everywhere and you need to put hand sanitizer on before entering any building. Family and friend gatherings need to be kept to a small number of people and it's no longer allowed to smoke on terraces if there are people around (about time!).

How have you been dealing with the pandemic?
It has been difficult, especially since I have a very young child that didn't understand why we couldn't leave the house. I meditated at night and did a ton of arts and crafts. I collected lids, milk cartons, cans.. my kitchen was packed! Later we made octopuses, trucks and "magical" objects that made my son happy.

What do you miss most about hosting study abroad students?
I miss everything. Feeling alive at work. Listening to their fears, questions, watching them grow, feeling useful for the students. The nerves on their arrival day and the sadness on their last day. I hope to have that feeling very soon!

For you, what is something positive that has come from these strange times?
I had never played so much with my son. I discovered that he is a magical being! I realized how invincible that we believed we were and the little that we valued certain things such as taking a walk, hugging a loved one, taking a trip to the mountains...

Michelle Durán, our Seville Resident Director and Director of Academic Affairs reflects on how COVID has impacted life in Seville.

How is the situation in Seville? What restrictions are there?
Nightlife (bars, dance clubs) have a very limited capacity. It’s obligatory to use a mask in and outside of public establishments, a lot of doctors are taking appointments over the phone and a lot of businesses and restaurantes have permanently closed. Seville is one of the few cities and provinces that has COVID under control. There are sporadic outbreaks and the level of hospitalized patients is very controlled.

How have you been dealing with the pandemic?
I’ve been handling it well because it’s been a while that I haven’t spent so much time at home. I love watching series and movies and in a way, the pandemic has permitted me to “enjoy” this hobby. I have also had time to organize each drawer and closet in my house, something that isn’t so easy having three children. I’m really sad to not be able to see my parents, since they’ve been quarantined in Puerto Rico since March.

What do you miss most about hosting study abroad students?
The cultural and social activities in the Center in Seville, chatting with the professors and the students, a healthy life with a normal job.

For you, what is something positive that has come from these strange times?
That one becomes accustomed to everything. That I have been able to mentally rest from my day-to-day schedule, from my routine outside of the house and to have been able to create a healthy routine inside of my home. I have also learned how to live alongside the fear of becoming infected and am slowly overcoming it. I have learned how to live with the “virus” and to still be happy. I’ve had a lot of time to share with my three sons and with my husband.

Meet our Alicante Resident Director, Pepa Vives! Pepa shares how she's been spending time during the pandemic and what life is like in Alicante.

How is the situation in Alicante?
Fortunately we’re returning back to normal little by little.

What restrictions are there in Alicante?
In public spaces you have to wear a mask, maintain a social distance and there is no smoking allowed.

How have you been dealing with the pandemic?
I’ve been trying to do what I love but never have time to do, like reading (I’ve already read 7 books), drawing. I love to make illustrations from children’s stories, study English, do pilates, and spend a lot of time with my family. A new hobby I've picked up is sewing. My specialty is making cool masks!

What do you miss most about hosting study abroad students?
I’m passionate about my job and I miss the students a lot in my day to day life. I miss the daily visits that they make to my office to chat with me, our trips, our walks through the city, sharing their accomplishments and frustrations, in short learning with and from them.

For you, what is something positive that has come from these strange times?
I know that it sounds cliché but it's true, I've learned to value that the true positive things in life aren't materialistic, they are the relationships that we establish with the people that surround us: family, friends, and in my case the students that form a part of my daily life.

Meet Pat Maqueda, our Resident Director from Córdoba, Argentina. Today, Pat is sharing what life is like in Córdoba right now.

🇦🇷

How is the situation in Argentina?
In Argentina, the COVID cases are concentrated in the city and province of Buenos Aires.

What restrictions are there in Córdoba?
Our life in Córdoba is almost 100% normal, we can go to bars, restaurants and today gyms are already opening, everything of course with its own protocol. Unfortunately, they still haven't opened schools or universities, all education is being done online.

How have you been dealing with the pandemic?
Since all education is being done online since the first minute of the quarantine, those who are in the area of education haven't stopped working, but from home! That means that now we save a lot of time (that before we spent traveling to work), so I have more time to go on walks, cook and work on my house!

What do you miss most about hosting study abroad students?
What I miss most is the excitement of meeting the new group of students in the airport, embracing the personality of every single student, the daily relationship that I have with the host families, etc. It's all about that enriching and interesting social life! And of course, the trips, where we share such special moments 24/7!!

For you, what is something positive that has come from these strange times?
As an English teacher, I have improved a lot in the online education sector, and on a personal level, I've understood that we all must learn how to adapt to new and sometimes difficult situations, always with the hope that the human being will learn how to overcome these situations and eventually fix them.

Meet Rocío Haro, our Resident Director in Havana, Cuba! She has been working with Spanish Studies Abroad since 2017 and is from Seville, Spain. Read below as she gives us an update on Havana and let’s us know how she has been coping in the times of COVID:

How is the current situation in Cuba?
In Cuba COVID is very much under control, there are very few cases. The public health system here is very strong and the population is disciplined.

What restrictions are there in Havana?
A mask is obligatory everywhere. In Havana they have suspended public transportation until the cases go down again. Restaurants, bars and entertainment facilities are closed as well.

How have you been dealing with the pandemic?
Reading a ton!! I've been able to catch up on my books that I hadn't read in a long time.

What do you miss most about hosting study abroad students?
The excursions, the conversations with them, the laughs.. I want them to come back already!!

What is something positive that has come out from all of this?
We have slowed down our pace of life, we've taken the time to be with our families, to rest, and to live more calmly. @ Havana, Cuba
