Today UMass Water Polo is proud to introduce our Men’s Captains Daniel Milenko and Noah Mantz!

Daniel majors in Finance and Sport Management and his favorite position is flat. Daniel’s favorite team memory is getting second in leagues. He is looking forward to playing again because this year he wants to help our team win the league. As a captain Daniel is looking forward to helping his teammates develop into the best players they can be.

Noah is a Civil Engineering Student and his favorite team memory is the first tournament he went to with the team, he really appreciated the energy everyone gave off simply supporting our team from the bleachers. Noah’s favorite position is flat. He is looking forward to building new skills and working hard with everyone on the team. Noah would love to help everyone try to perfect fun skills and feel good using the skills they worked hard to build.

This is the last post of our Water Polo Wednesday series and we hope that everyone continues to have an enjoyable and safe summer!

Welcome to another week of Water Polo Wednesday!!! Today we are showing off our Women's Captains Jackie Dirschel and Liri Mustafa!

Jackie is a rising junior majoring in Psychology, and she likes to play flat. Her favorite memory was the tournament this year. She saw how everyone was able to improve with each game and worked really well as a team. Jackie can’t wait to play again and see everyone and get back to normal which she hopes to occur in the spring. When we are able to get back together she wants to help the team make up for lost time and get back into shape together and also have fun with each other.

Liri is a rising sophomore majoring in Public Health her favorite team memory is going down the waterslide after the women's tournament. She misses seeing the team everyday, watching Jackie drown everyone during practices, and improving as a team. Liri didn’t know anything about water polo when she started, but found the captains were super patient and spent hours and days explaining everything to her and now that she kinda knows what she's doing. Liri hopes to be the kind of captain people come to with questions so that she can help them improve as well; to pass on the knowledge basically :)

Our Coaches will be Sashi Weerawarana and Justin Bailey!!

Sashi is a rising senior majoring in Chemistry. Her favorite positions to play are set and flat. Sashi loves teaching people how to play and seeing them become passionate about the sport. She is excited for her third and final year as coach and is looking forward to seeing everyone again! She is always looking out for the team's best interest and making sure the players stay motivated. At the beginning of Corona she even hosted Zoom workout sessions to ensure that everyone could stay in touch and workout together.

Justin Bailey is a junior who is majoring in Physics and Math. His favorite position is set and his favorite team memory was beating Amherst, a local team we have had a friendly rivalry with. As an experienced player he constantly drives everyone on the team to play better and smarter while striving to improve his own game as well. He has been doing an awesome job of this by finding different types of workouts that teach us better techniques for playing.

This Wednesday we are presenting Madison Studley as our Secretary! She is a rising senior majoring in Psychology and minoring in Biology. She can’t wait to finally hang out with the team again and goof around during the late night dinners. Madi had never heard of water polo until freshman year during the UMass Activities Expo and some members encouraged her to join. Now she is eager to help recruit new members, make new friends, and show them how much fun this sport can be!

Look forward to next week when we introduce the coaches!

UMass Club Water Polo would like to introduce our Treasurer Will Merritt! He is a Junior working towards a Political Science major with a minor in Economics. Will’s favorite positions are Set and D-set but he also enjoys playing defense in general. The best memories he has with the team are from the practices, tournaments and the late night dinners with everyone. He is looking forward to playing his favorite sport with his favorite team once we can finally play again. Until then we hope everyone is remaining safe and keeping their spirits up during these difficult times.

This week we would like to take a moment to recognize the injustice that is happening throughout this country. UMass Club Water Polo does not condone racism or injustice at any level. We have been saddened by the death of George Floyd and although this is a difficult time the most effective way to have your voice heard is through voting, peaceful protests, signing petitions, and donating. #Blacklivesmatter

Welcome back to Water Polo Wednesday!!! For the next few weeks we will be introducing the new leaders of the team.

Starting off we have our President Lizzy Wojciechowska!! She is a senior Microbiology major with a minor in Plant Pathology. Lizzy has done a wonderful job in the past as our secretary and vice-president; her progression through the ranks has shown her passion for this team. This season she is super excited to see all her teammates again and welcome some new members. Lizzy is also looking forward to getting back into goal after last season was cut short. She has made amazing progress in goal as she demonstrated during the women’s tournament and will continue to do so next season!!

Look forward to next week when we introduce the Vice President! We hope everyone is staying safe and enjoying the summer!

Although our seniors aren’t having the graduation weekend they had anticipated, they have been a crucial part of our team over the last few years and we wanted to take time to recognize them! Jacob Cowley, Paul Finneran, Benjamin Barros, Emma Hoffman, Michela Oster, and Yam Schaal, congratulations and we'll miss you guys!

We reached out to our quarantined seniors and got updates and final words from a few of them:
•Jacob, our outgoing President, will be working at a Lowell company, Wi2Tech, as a Research Assistant Intern tasked with the creation and evaluation of porous film structures for water filtration. He wants to say a big thank you to the team for the great community they've given him here at UMass. He looks forward to cheering you all on next year!
•Ben plans on pursuing his Ph.D. in Biochemistry! According to him, “Attending UMass was like walking on a tight rope over a pit of fire, in clearing it I stand here now looking back and all I see is a field of sunflowers beaming with love and happy memories.” He also wanted to express his love for this team with his time being a part of it as the highlight of his college career, allowing him to meet some of the most dedicated and hardworking people. He can’t wait to see what amazing things everyone will accomplish in the years to come!
•Emma has loved being secretary this past year and even as a late addition to the team has felt welcome and a part of the Wapo family from the very beginning. Having participated in individual sports until joining water polo, she’s had so much fun working as a part of a team and getting to know her fellow players in that capacity as well as outside of the pool. Although she’s not sure where she’ll end up next year with her Public Health degree, she hopes to eventually find another water polo team to play with and can’t wait to see where the UMass team goes from here!

To the rest of you seniors, we can’t wait to see where you guys end up next year and look forward to seeing you visit as alumni!

This is the 2019-2020 eboard signing off, we’ll miss this team & wish you the best of luck next year!

Her ball handling, shooting, and driving skills, which help keep play moving, show that. Keep up the good work and positive energy Emma!

Congrats to our players of the week and tournament, Sarthak and Lizzy! Sarthak has been consistently showing up to practice, helping others to learn and practice new skills in the pool, and of course, working on his lob shot. Lizzy worked really hard as goalie this past weekend at our first women’s tournament, keeping the point gap low and majorly supporting our defense. Keep up the great work guys!

Last week’s player of the week was Michael Yang! This time of year, with exams and other commitments, it can be hard to prioritize extracurricular activities, but Michael has kept it one of his top priorities to continue showing up at practice. Recently he has been filling in the more difficult roles in the pool, helping new players, playing different positions, and learning some impressive technical skills like developing a wicked shot. Keep up the great work Michael!!

A big thank you to everyone who participated in our gear sale last week! The items should arrive in the next few weeks. We are so appreciative of your support and can't wait to see you repping our team come holiday time!

Our players of the week and tournament are Amelia Navarre and Daniel Milenko! Last week was a busy one for a lot of people and even with the stress of midterms and classes, Amelia put in extra effort to come to practice, making drills and scrimmages run smoothly! She also came on the long hike up to Vermont to support the team at Champs and was a friendly face throughout the weekend. Daniel, our player of the tournament, really stood out in the pool. He was swimming back, covering his defenders, and put in some real hard work on offense, scoring many goals for our team! Awesome job guys!
