What happens when you take decades of paint, community expression, and a little Wolverine spirit and turn it into art?

Stamps Lecturer Sally Clegg’s new work is inspired by Ann Arbor’s iconic painted landmark, The Rock. Clegg carefully collected small samples from the layers of paint beneath The Rock and transformed them into vibrant, Rorschach-like compositions. She calls the material “Wolverineite,” a colorful record of generations of U-M students and community members who have made The Rock their canvas.

The project is more than a study of color and material; it’s a reflection on community creativity, history, and the stories embedded in the places we share. Clegg is also donating 10% of the proceeds from print sales of Sentimental Rock to the Lead Exposure Elimination Project.

Every project starts with a question - and what happens next is up to the artist.

For Stamps students completing Second Year Studio, the goal isn't to find one right answer. It's about identifying a question, exploring it, experimenting, revising, and finding a path to follow.

New Stamps students: this is your chance to explore the Art & Architecture Building, see what your fellow Stamps students are creating, and get a glimpse of the creative possibilities ahead.

✨ Opening Reception: OCT 1

Stamps alum Ellen Rutt (BFA '12) is transforming the halls of U-M’s new College of Pharmacy with a 100-foot immersive mural that brings the history, discoveries, and human stories of pharmacy to life.

“There are a lot of things that can only be experienced through our senses,” Rutt said. “You can describe the texture of bark, but it’s not the same as seeing the ripples in the bark or the texture of a Gila monster. I think art can bring that dimension to things that, when there’s only words, you just don’t get.”

Titled InterActions, the vibrant mixed-media work blends archival imagery, medicinal plants, researchers, and milestones to explore the powerful intersection of art, science, research, and patient care.

Hands on Fire, a new solo exhibition of Stamps Professor Jim Cogswell’s drawings inspired by Greek myth, opens Monday, August 31 at the Residential College Gallery.

This solo exhibition features 60 mixed-media drawings on paper, created between 2024 and 2026 in dialogue with the cinematic adaptations of Euripides’ tragedies by Greek Cypriot filmmaker Michael Cacoyannis. Through layered imagery and recurring motifs of hands rendered as flame, Cogswell examines themes of war, power, fate, and the enduring human consequences of violence and revenge. Arranged in a surrounding grid, the works create a narrative that loops and fractures, inviting viewers into a visual system where ancient stories remain urgently present, entangled, and unresolved.

Public reception: Friday, September 18
🕘 4:30–6:30 PM
📍 University of Michigan Residential College Gallery
📅 On view Aug 31 – Oct 9, 2026
