🌈 We Are Hues 🌈
As the days get shorter in Michigan, color starts to fade from our surroundings. Last week, Professor Rebekah Modrak's Studio: 2D class fought back, making Ann Arbor a brighter place by turning themselves into walking hues. From head to toe, this project invites Stamps students to notice and celebrate color in public spaces, standing out by blending in with the palette of the world around them.

TONIGHT, visit Stamps Gallery for the opening receptions of TWO amazing exhibitions from 6-8 pm, and celebrate Stamps MFA alumni and current students bringing innovative art & design projects into the community! ✨

In the final phase of Fore-Site: The Stamps Gallery Pillar Project, Abhishek Narula (MFA '20) and Nathan Byrne (Lecturer, MFA '21) bring their studio practice into direct conversation with Stamps Gallery, reimagining the building's concrete pillars on Division Street.

In Reverie, curated by—and featuring the work of—the Student-led Exhibition Committee (SEC), undergraduate Stamps students explore the space between waking and dreaming, where memory, imagination, desire, and reality overlap and take on new forms.

Last week, Amy Franceschini of Future Farmers visited Ann Arbor, where she led Stamps Master of Design (MDes) and IP students in a workshop at the Nichols Arboretum before her Penny Stamps Speaker Series presentation. The creative explorations formed in this collaboration, including paper the group made in the Huron River, is on view at Duderstadt Center Gallery. Don't miss this short-term exhibition showing the group's process-led approach: it closes at noon on Tuesday, October 13!

TODAY at 5:30 PM! Watch Aanikoobijigan (ancestor/great-grandparent/great-grandchild), a documentary by Adam and Zack Khalil exploring the fight to bring Indigenous Ancestors home, at the Michigan Theater - then, hear from the filmmakers and special guests after the screening at Stamps Gallery.

Aanikoobijigan follows repatriation specialists from the Michigan Anishinaabek Cultural Preservation and Repatriation Alliance (MACPRA) as they work to return Indigenous Ancestors and funerary objects held in museums, libraries, and archives to their communities. It confronts the history behind these collections and the ongoing struggle to bring Ancestors home for reburial.

Join us for this special Penny Stamps Speaker Series screening, followed by a reception and Q&A with filmmakers Adam and Zack Khalil and special guests at Stamps Gallery.

Don't miss UMMA’s Fall Opening Celebration this weekend! Rediscover the newly-renovated Alumni Memorial Hall, explore new exhibitions by Rick Lowe and Holly Bass, and hear from the artists in scheduled talks and workshop events.

Holly Bass's "We Hold These Truths" focuses on three anniversary years—1876, 1976, and 2026—to explore how national ideals are staged in public, preserved in private, and passed down through generations. As the Stamps 2025–2026 Roman J. Witt Artist-in-Residence, Bass connected with students, faculty, and community members to prepare for her exhibition, using the language of the home to ask what truths we inherit, what histories remain unresolved, and what stories we choose to carry forward.

"Black Wall Street Journey: Re and De Imagining Black Progress," Lowe’s largest institutional solo exhibition in the United States and the culmination of a three-year residency at U-M’s Institute for Social Research, is a public art project that brings together painting, sculpture, and public installation to examine how Black prosperity, resilience, and self-determination are represented, measured, and understood.

During Lowe's residency, he closely collaborated with Stamps Professor Nicole Marroquin’s course ARTDES 203: Social Spaces: The Role of Artists, Designers and Citizens - and nearly 200 prints Stamps students created to investigate the history of print traditions as tools for communication, solidarity and collective action are displayed in the exhibition at both UMMA and ISR.

Celebrate creativity, community, and collaboration at UMMA this Saturday from 12-5 p.m.

We are thrilled to introduce the finalists for the 2027 Envision: The Michigan Artist Initiative award: Mandy Cano Villalobos, Abhishek Narula, and Joey Quiñones. These artists were selected by a prominent panel of jurors: Rehema Barber, Chief Curator, Kalamazoo Institute of Art; Laura Mott, Chief Curator, Cranbrook Art Museum; and artist Sara Nickleson, winner of the 2025 Envision: Michigan Artist Initiative Award.

Join us at Stamps Gallery from June 10 through July 31, 2027, to experience this compelling exhibition. Don’t miss this opportunity to engage with innovative work by three of Michigan’s finest contemporary artists!
