Bard Percussion Studio

Eric Cha-Beach, Josh Quillen, Adam Sliwinski, and Jason Treuting of Sō Percussion are proud to co-direct the percussion program at the Bard College Conservatory of Music. Students study with the members of Sō, with an exciting roster of guest teachers drawn from the professional music world as well as with program advisers Jan Williams and Garry Kvistad in masterclass settings. In addition to a rigorous focus on chamber music, students explore music outside of the western tradition and have opportunities to work closely with the John Cage Trust, located on the Bard campus. All Conservatory undergraduates pursue a five-year program leading to two degrees: the Bachelor of Music degree and the Bachelor of Arts degree in a field other than music. The innovative curriculum of the Bard College Conservatory of Music is guided by the principle that musicians should be broadly educated in the liberal arts and sciences in order to achieve their greatest potential.

Sō's Josh Quillen talks through the challenges and rewards of creating solo arrangements for steel drums.

Of course we cannot WAIT to make and share music as a team – but no one knows better than musicians the potential rewards of focused solo time.

Sending you all much love! (See the lead sheet in comments below.)

Take a look at the Percussion Teaching Fellow positions announced by Bard Conservatory!

As you may know, members of So (Eric Bradley Cha-Beach and Jason Hussein Treuting) are faculty at Bard Conservatory – and we're pleased to share this opportunity:

The Bard College Conservatory is seeking applicants for two teaching fellowship positions in the Percussion Department. The percussion fellows are students in the Advanced Performance Studies (APS) program, as well as being involved in all aspects of running the percussion program at the Bard Conservatory – scheduling and leading chamber music rehearsals, mentoring and organizing the orchestra percussion section, coordinating the teaching schedule, maintaining the instrument collection, and monitoring the progress of students in the program. Percussion fellows receive a full-tuition scholarship to the APS program, as well as a stipend for living expenses. Interested applicants should submit a letter of interest and a current resume to Eric Cha-Beach ([email protected]) by January 1, 2020. A small number of applicants will be invited to complete a full application, which will include a live playing audition and interview at Bard.

Tom Morrison's "Dystopia Etudes," is performed here at the Sō Percussion Summer Institute 2018 by Joe Berry, Caleb Evans, Francis Favis, and Rebecca McDaniel.

Applications to SōSI 2019 are due Feb. 1, for information: https://apply.sopercussion.com/

We hope you can join us!

From Tom Morrison:
Dystopia Etudes (2018)—for four percussionists and fixed media—is a piece about living in an overwhelming society. The work mixes the percussion and electronics to create an unsettled and insecure atmosphere. The three short etudes are each centered around the drum set, which creates both structure and chaos. With each etude so dense and fleeting, the piece as a whole is a short collection of brief dystopian scenes.
