Alternative History Club

Alternative History Club Life is about making choices. Up until now, Up until now, every choice different people have made led to different results, which we call "history." What could we learn from looking back on these different results?

This club is made in Bard College by Jonas Park and Jerzy Sylvester. The club adviser is Samuel Hugo Willner.

Hello everyone,

I am Jonas Park, the current head of the History Club.

As some of us already know, we were supposed to have Movie Producer Sarah Botstein's "The Vietnam War" Guest Talk event next Friday afternoon, November 30th, in which Sarah will bring a clip reel of "The Vietnam War" TV series, and discuss the behind-the-scenes decision-making of the film and how that shaped the historical narrative shown on screen.

However, since Sarah had schedule conflicts for November 30th, she told me that she is no longer able to make it. So she informed me that her guest talk event that was scheduled to happen on the 30th of this November has been postponed to next semester.

So we will instead will have our last Multimedia Discussion Meeting from 2:00 PM to 3:30 PM, next Friday, November 30th, 2018, at Olin LC 115. We will spend time to use multimedia such as movies, books, or games and talk about our club theme for this semester, "Why Human Beings Keep Fighting?" This discussion will be a prelude to "The Vietnam War" Series Guest Talk next semester. We will have snacks and drinks.

I hope you have a great Thanksgiving and end of the semester.

Best,
Jonas Park
Head and Co-Founder of the History Club

History Club will have the Multimedia Discussion Meeting from 2:00 PM to 3:30 PM, this Friday, October 26th, 2018, at Olin LC 120.

We will announce more updated information on upcoming events such as movie producer Sarah Botstein's guest talk, and finally, we will talk about how different multimedia such as books, movies, or games illustrate examples of different historical events of “bloody, last supper.” We will focus on “Absalom kills Amnon,” “Death of Odoacer,” “Korean Dictator Yeon Gaesomun’s coup“, “Massacre in the Great Temple of Tenochtitlan”, “Death of Chinese General Mao Wenlong”, etc.

I look forward to meeting soon,

Best,
Jonas Park

Hello everyone,

History Club has begun its second year.

I am Jonas Park, co-founder and head of the History Club, and my co-founder is Jerzy Sylvester.

Starting this Friday (9/28) or next Friday (10/5), we will have the introductory meeting, in which we will talk about what history-related events we can do for this semester as follows.

1) Introducing each other and talking about a little survey, which I want club members to take a moment to fill out in this form before the meeting day.
(link: https://goo.gl/forms/8FN2pu4riccZv1Aq2 )

2) Bard historical archive visit event, which answers the question "How did Bard students in 20th century have fun?" or "Are there Mexican relics in New York?"

3) Movie Producer Sarah Botstein's Guest Talk Event on "Vietnam War series, movies, history"

4) Possible Connections to non-campus historical organizations

5) And having fun time (game, movie, books, and etc.).

For more information on our club: https://www.facebook.com/thehistorycluborg/

That's all for now, but feel free to email me ([email protected]) if you have any urgent questions! Also, don't forget to fill out the survey form (link: https://goo.gl/forms/8FN2pu4riccZv1Aq2 ) by this Thursday noon. If you are not sure or can't fill out by this week, you can fill out by next week, so we can set up for next Friday or later.

Let me know if you are interested.

Hello all,

I had video-recorded today's Professor Moynahan's "What is Modernity" Guest Talk Session. But since the quality is not really good, it will be mostly carefully edited video or podcast. I will be starting to edit Greg Moynahan's session video and Sean McMeekin's previous session, and I will be most likely done with edited video works by the end of May. Also, since these recorded videos are not for public use but for our History Club use only, I won't be posting these edited videos on YouTube. I will instead make History Club blog website where I will post edited video works or podcasts.

I am thankful that Professor Moynahan just made wonderful presentation on "What is Modernity," and I hope to continue this History Club next semester if possible.

I am also thankful that many members came to meetings regularly and thus we succeeded in making the idealistic, vivid history club environment, which I mentioned further in history club guide sheet.

I wish you all good luck with completing this semester works, and our History Club may return next semester or later!

Best regards,
Jonas Park
History Club Head and Co-Founder

This Friday (5/11), from 3 pm to 4:20 pm, at Olin LC 210, we will be having a special guest talk session by Professor Greg Moynahan. He will be talking about interesting topics such as "What is Modernity" and "How He Views the Modernity." This will be our last history club meeting for this semester.

The attached picture is the Bruno Taut image of the glass pavilion, which was "sort of an emblem of the modern in the day," according to Professor Moynahan.

Just right now, North Korean President Kim Jong-un and South Korean President Moon Jae-in shook hands together at Korean DMZ.

Kim Jong-un wrote his entry in the guest book in DMZ, which was written as follows, "the new history begins from now on, from era of peace, from starting point of history." (This is my own translation of what he wrote)

Indeed, from this moment, new history begins. We will see what it will be for the future of Korea.
