“In the Gospels, something that sticks out to me is Jesus’ attention to those who are on the margins. What fuels what I do is that I don’t want anybody to feel like they’re not known and that their voice isn’t being heard.” — social work major Hilda Davis ’20. A great piece on Biology professor Joy Doan and her story of how the intersection of her passion for scientific study and her faith brought her to Bethel!

Biology professor Joy Doan fused her love for science and God by coming to Bethel. By Joy Doan Fifteen years ago, I was a disillusioned academic living in Denver, Colorado. I was coming off a dozen…

Wrapped up Spring Retreat with brunch in the Eastlund room. Students wrote how Living the Questions has impacted them over the course of this past year, and then threw them into a tray of sand, to show the “impact” visually (just as craters on the moon reflect the impact meteorites had on its surface).

Praying as students continue on after this experience, bearing the impact of living the questions on their spiritual and educational life—thank you to all the parents and mentors who helped guide them along the way! @ Bethel University

Happy Easter everyone—He is risen indeed! Thinking back to last summer when #scienceandfaith students nailed their confessions to a cross, as a symbol of Christ’s death for their sins, and carried it to the campfire past Seminary hill for a night of worship. Celebrating Christ’s death and resurrection means so much more when we understand it in a deeply personal way—praying you take time tonight to reflect on that yourself. @ Bethel University

Bethel professor Dr. Terry Artie’s response to how MEDIA & FAITH interact in his life:
“I’d have to say that my faith has impacted my creation, criticism and consumption of visual media in terms of responsibility. What is my obligation to my audience, what is my obligation to my art and what is my obligation to God as I write and create? As I consume media how do I decide what is beneficial and what is not? As a result I try to pass this mindset on to my students in both my creative and critical classes.”

Another Bethel professor’s take on this year’s theme of MEDIA & FAITH:

"Our media consumption and technology use ought to help, not hinder, our communion with God, our relationships with each other, and our commitments to God's creation. As Paul writes in Galatians 5:13, "For you were called to freedom, brethren; only do not turn your freedom into an opportunity for the flesh, but through love serve one another. Our media and technology use tends to both feed and reflect our inner being, so it's good to remember that “Nothing outside a man can make him unclean by going into him, rather, it is what comes out of a man that makes him unclean (Mark 7:14-16).”

-Dr. Ripley Smith

As we approach our week on campus this summer, we’re curious what Bethel professors from the communications and media production studies think about our topic of MEDIA & FAITH. So we asked: how does your faith impact the media you consume/create and vice verse? Here’s what they had to say:

“Romans 1:20 - For since the creation of the world His invisible attributes, His eternal power and divine nature, have been clearly seen, being understood through what has been made...

Even before He made us, God gave us creation as the "longest running television series in history" as a mass communication medium to communicate to us about Himself. This is turn teaches us that God values mass communication and that we as His creation should learn how to create content that is God-honoring and watch/listen/read content that is worthwhile.”
-Dr. Scott Sochay

Meet Marie, a freshman Marketing and Graphic Design major at Bethel, and another Youth Crew member!

“I love working with high school students because they have so much potential that they often don't see and have the ability to tackle tough questions and wrestle with their faith. High school is a unique time of growth for teenagers and it was a time of my life that I loved and I want to help others love it too.”

“I see media taking my eyes off of what is to be the focus of my life: God. It is so easy to see others, begin to compare, then wish for something I don't have and become discontent with what I've been given.”

Meet Marah, a freshman double major in Missional Ministries and Relational Communications, and another amazing member of this year’s Youth Crew!

“I love Bethel because of the amount of relationships and connections you make with your peers and the faculty!”

“I also love working with high school students because they are able to bring a new perspective of looking at multiple topics! One way that I see social media affecting my faith is though the way that deep and personal relationships are formed outside of technology.”

“I love working with high school students because I'm very familiar with the situations they're going through and I love teaching them what I learned during that season of life. I also love learning from them as we discuss media and faith.”

“Finding ways to balance/combine media and faith is important in order to have a healthy and thriving relationship with God and others around you.”

Our Youth Crew has officially started church visits and we’re pumped to meet some of the awesome youth groups that make up the Twin Cities! Here’s some background on the students serving on Youth Crew this year:

Lacey Barkalow’s a junior Relational Communications major at Bethel. “I love Bethel because it challenges me in a healthy way in every aspect of my life especially academically and the people here are fun!!! And I love high school students because they know how to make a person laugh!”

“How we choose to spend our time in this life is up to us, therefore it is important to understand how much time we are using and how we can use it to give life to the people we are with.”
