It may be summer but CJ never quits. Cowley CJ sponsored two of our May graduates, Braxton Bright and Jose Macias spent a week attending Kansas Highway Patrol's Collegiate Law and they represented Cowley well. They reported that it was an amazing experience. They qualified for Troop physical standards and often exceeded "max scores". Braxton served as class commander and they came in the top 5 in every station test including defensive tactics, fi****ms, and EVOC. We are super proud of their performance but we expected no less.

Today was that bittersweet day in criminal justice. The last final of the semester was the sophomore patrol group that has spent two years together. The twist is that the final was comprised of questions from every criminal justice course over the last 2 years not just this semester. It's fun watching them rise to the challenge, remember everything, and put it all together. When I give tours for our program I tell everybody about the family feel that develops in our program when you spend so much time together. They may fight like brothers and sisters but they always have each other's backs. Today they got to take their final and work as a team one last time. I am proud of all of their accomplishments. It is bitter sweet to watch them succeed and yet have to say goodbye. Typically students are very eager to get out of the last final of the semester but not in our program.

The sophomores last class ended with a bang as they had their range day. Definitely bittersweet as we had fun together, realizing time was quickly drawing to an end. A special thanks to Galen Giddens, of the Winfield Police Department, for sharing his support, knowledge, and expertise. Also thanks to Mike Yoder, at Trigger Guard Range, for his support allowing us to use his awesome facility. If you are looking for a place to shoot definitely check him out.

I've always said I am blessed with great students, albeit somewhat ornery. I came in this morning to this. Their instructor will be happy if they put as much effort into their finals!!!

Scenarios concluded with some street level drug sales. This leaned heavy into knowing the difference between reasonable suspicion and probable cause. We also had a return trip to the scene to look for evidence and had to work extra on our field interviews...special thanks to Joe Hill for the last minute assist!

Yeah, we've had a lot going on in CJ recently. While many areas wind down close to the end of the semester we double down. We don't lighten up we tighten up! Here Chief Robbie Delong of the Winfield Police Department is working with our sophomores to get them range ready...Thank you Chief for sharing your expertise.

One of the difficult things of running a program like ours is getting to know such awesome students over two years and then seeing them move on. Thursday was a big day for our sophomores as they participated in mock oral boards to help them practice and fine tune those job seeking skills. I'm thinking maybe we should start a new CJ dress code as they certainly looked great! A special thanks to our local agencies for allowing great interviewers to give a day of their time to our students. Thanks to Stacy Rider and Adam Trahan of the Cowley County Sheriff's Office, John Merz of the Arkansas City Police Department and Kevyn Ternes of the Winfield Police Department foe your insight and time!
