The Master of Liberal Arts & Sciences Program is an interdisciplinary, part-time course of study for college graduates who are interested in broad-based learning at the master’s degree level. Our evening classes allow working professionals the opportunity to grow intellectually. A versatile and stimulating degree program, the MLA may be useful in advancing your career or it may simply allow you to enjoy learning for the sake of learning. Your classmates are lifelong learners, whether they are working professionals or recent graduates. Courses and topics are tailored to current issues, providing students a relevant graduate education for the twenty-first century.

Mission: The goal of the Master of Liberal Arts & Sciences Program is to complement the UNC Asheville’s liberal arts mission while exploring human nature, human values and the quality of human life. The broad-based theme integrates studies ranging from the humanities and the arts to the natural and social sciences. Its diverse scope allows students to choose from a wide range of courses, and the interdisciplinary nature of the program acts to promote a broad, enriched experience in the study of the human condition. The MLAS Program allows graduate students to develop their intellectual passion within a community of thoughtful peers and under the direction of faculty members who champion of the value of liberal learning.

MLAS Students, Alumni, and Community members:
Faculty Senate took a vote on Dec. 5 to advise University Administration to discontinue the MLAS Program. Please see this email (below) from Senate leadership for more information. We thank you for your continued feedback and support throughout this process.
***
This note is being sent to the campus community from the Faculty Senate Executive committee, as requested by a motion and vote of the full faculty senate.

Throughout the fall semester, the Faculty Senate Academic Policies Committee (APC) and Institutional Development Committee (IDC) reviewed the MLAS Program using 17 review questions voted on and approved by the full faculty senate as a process for researching and reviewing the program.

The review results from the two subcommittees were compiled into a singular document titled EC1: MLAS Review Summary Document, and treated as any formal senate document with a First Reading and inviting feedback on the document during the month between senate meetings. All feedback received was compiled into a shared Google file for all senators to access and discuss within their subcommittees throughout the month prior to the final Second Reading, senate discussion and voting process.

During the Faculty Senate meeting held on Thursday, December 5th 2019 at 3:15pm the document was discussed and then senators voted. The vote was taken by secret ballot and senators were asked to cast one vote for two possible recommendations, or to abstain. The results of the ballot are pasted below.

Select one of the following votes:

(9 votes)I recommend that the MLAS program be discontinued.

(8 votes)I recommend that the MLAS program continue with the adoption of a revitalization plan, considering some of the changes and modifications listed for its continuation.

(1 vote)I choose to abstain.

Now that this review and recommendation process has been completed and vetted through the Faculty Senate, these results will help to inform the work we do together as a university on next steps. Please look for an email soon from the Provost with more information about next steps.

Further details of the discussion held during the senate meeting will be available when the minutes are approved and released to the campus community in late January. Please contact the Faculty Senate Executive Committee if you have any further questions about the review and recommendation process.

Sincerely,
Laura Bond, Senate Chair
Marietta Cameron, Senate Vice Chair
Patrick Bahls, Senate Second Vice Chair
Aubri Rote, Senate Third Vice Chair
Kai Campbell, Provost and Ex-Officio Member of Faculty Senate

As many of you know, the MLAS Program is still under review. Do you want to help?

Here's how! We have one (1) week for anyone (current students, alumni, staff, faculty, community members, etc.) to send statements concerning the MLAS to the Faculty Senate Chair, Laura Bond. These statements could be concerns you have for or about the program, the importance it had on your life and education, the quality of the program, or its place in the community--anything you feel you need to say about the program and want our Faculty Senate to know.

Please bear in mind that you are representing the program, so please keep all your statements professional and responsible! Statements should be sent to [email protected] ; if you have any questions, please contact Lilly Augspurger ([email protected])
We appreciate any feedback or support you'd like to provide!
