We sadly share that SAI Honorary Member Martina Arroyo, recognized as one of the pre-eminent lirico-spinto sopranos of our time, died this week at the age of 89. After winning the 1958 Metropolitan Opera Auditions of the Air radio competition, she debuted later that year at Carnegie Hall in the American premiere of Pizzetti’s ‘Assassinio nella cattedrale’. Arroyo went to Europe and performed major roles in Vienna, Düsseldorf, Berlin, Frankfurt, and Zurich. In 1965 she substituted Birgit Nilsson in the title role of Aida to a standing ovation. She went on to excel in Met Verdi productions. In 1972 she debuted at Milan’s La Scala, Paris’ Opéra National, and Buenos Aires’ Teatro Colón, cementing her status worldwide. She established the Martina Arroyo Foundation in New York City in 2003 for emerging artists at the inception of their professional careers, with a structured curriculum focusing on the study and preparation of complete operatic roles. The International Alliance for Women in Music announces the 2026 cycle for the Pauline Alderman Awards for outstanding scholarship on women in music. Works published during the calendar years 2024 and 2025 will be considered for cash prizes.

Closing date for submissions: November 15, 2026

The Pauline Alderman Awards were founded in 1985 by the International Congress on Women in Music to honor the memory of pioneering musicologist Dr. Pauline Alderman (1893–1983), founder and chair of the Music History Department of the University of Southern California. A blend of folk, balladry, and field songs built as much on instrumental virtuosity as lyrical cleverness, country music is at home in the hollers, the prairies, the hony-tonks, and the grandest stages of the continent. Some of the most prolific and popular women composers and performers of the past hundred years are either inspired by or deeply rooted in country, including the Carter Family, Patsy Montana, Kitty Wells, Patsy Cline, Dolly Parton, Rhiannon Giddens, and Beyoncé, whose ‘Cowboy Carter’ received the 2025 Grammys for Album and Country Album of the Year.

The July 2028 SAI National Convention will be held in the Gila River Indian Community on the Gila River Indian Reservation, home of the Huhugam beginning in 300 BC. The civilization peaked in size in 1450 AD, with agricultural and urban development sustaining up to 60,000 people. Now home to the Pima and Maricopa, the community hosts resorts, spas, tech services, a heritage center, and its own TV station with both English and O’odham language programming.

The National Convention will be held at the Sheraton Grand at Wild Horse Pass from July 13-17, 2028. Reservation and registration information will be made available next year.
