While advocacy organizations existed earlier in the 1900s throughout North America and Europe, it was the June 1969 protests against police brutality at New York’s Stonewall Inn that made gay rights a national discourse. In 2000, June was declared an official month to recognize Stonewall and subsequent legal standings. In 2009, the designation was expanded to recognize a wider spectrum of identity.

SAI’s PAN PIPES and Composers Bureau Updates have featured items on performances by a number of LGBTQIA+ musical groups, including the Gay Men’s Chorus at Carnegie Hall and the Le***an and Big Apple Gay Corps Symphonic Band, as well as other articles.
