WCU Counseling Program

WCU Counseling Program The Counseling program at WCU offers two Master’s degrees in the following areas, School Counseling and Clinical Mental Health Counseling.

The WCU graduate programs in clinical mental health counseling and school counseling are in the Department of Human Services within the College of Education and Allied Professions.

Mission: The mission of the WCU counseling programs is to subscribe to the standards of CACREP and prepare ethically bound professional counselors for entry-level counseling positions in agency and school settings. The faculty teach and supervise across program areas and focus on excellence in the preparation of professional counselors regardless of the setting in which they will be employed. Instruction in counseling is founded upon commitment to the belief that individuals are valuable, responsible, and capable and that counselor’s work to create the conditions in which people prize themselves as human beings and act accordingly. The counseling faculty is committed to creating teaching-learning environments that encourage the active participation of students. Students are invited to join faculty in advocating for clients’ and human rights and for professionalism which requires adequate reflection and careful consideration of the interest and welfare of the persons affected by their decisions. Page Policies: The College of Education and Allied Profession's (CEAP) Diversity Dialogue page encourages active discussion and sharing of information and thoughts. However, content that includes profanity, personal attacks, commercial promotions, election campaign materials or is otherwise deemed inappropriate will be deleted by the page administrators.

Congratulations to WCU Counseling faculty for her recent publication! Dr. Likis-Werle’s research found mindfulness meditation to be effective in eliciting positive emotions and thoughts, and a helpful addition to a counseling session if the client is willing and brief mindfulness education is provided beforehand. Using a rural sample, the researchers discovered mindfulness practices to be more widely accepted than previously thought.

Two tips clients recommended:
• 5 minutes may not be long enough (clients wanted more)
• Facilitated guided imagery seems to be preferable to silence or breathing alone

With sadness we want to inform you of the death of a recent WCU Counseling graduate, Troy Simmerson. Troy demonstrated tremendous grit and tenacity in completing his degree, and helped us all learn and grow in love and compassion. Our thoughts and prayers are with Troy's family...and with all of our WCU Counseling family.

Knowing that all of you are heartbreakers, this could be a blind spot that needs to be addressed with clients and students. I sure wish I had classroom guidance on this as a kid, because like most introverted and/or shy students, I did not and would not seek help for this issue. And, shy and highly sensitive students are the ones who are going to be most adversely effected by heartache. *Lastly, working with colleagues on a presentation/paper now, but I predict that you will see a marked increase in the number of clients/students with hypersensitivity issues related to: sound, light, texture, fabric, food, crowds, eye contact etc. More to come, I'll keep you posted.

Alumna Jerri Wommack gets a WLOS shout-out!

In the middle of the chaos of class change at Cane Creek Middle School, counselor Jerri Wommack gives out hugs, direction, and encouragement. Wommack, one of Cane Creek's 2 counselors, wouldn't have it any other way. "I often get from people "ugh, middle school" says Wommack. "I say, 'oh, no, It's t...

1. Will publication in mp be advantageous when applying to colleges or the CIA? Yes (trust me).
2. Can the art be published anonymously? Yes.
3. Does it need to be mental health-related? No, art heals and renews regardless of the subject matter.
4. How did I achieve such developed biceps? It's mostly genetics. https://www.wcu.edu/WebFiles/PDFs/CEAP-HS-COUN_MasterpeacePermissionForm.pdf

Sounds like we won't be LPCs much longer! This may be a headache at first but hopefully will benefit our field in the long run. Thoughts?
Anyone interested in doing Intensive In Home family services as a Qualified Mental Health Professional please comment on this post. This is a full time job, however hours and schedule are flexible. Identified clients are kids from 6-18 however staff work with the whole family system. This particular team in need of staff specializes in LGBTQ youth but also works with many other populations as well. Again please comment if interested or if you would like more info. Thanks
https://www.facebook.com/urbanleakdotcom/videos/298239124335003/ Thought of you, Russ, when you talked about the upside of social media being able to reach lots of people fast to create positive change. Made me smile!
I had just started the Counseling program when 9/11 happened. Adina, Suzanne and I drove to Cullowhee for class. Mary Deck wrapped her arms around us and let us feel all the feelings. It was the best and the worst all at once. What an introduction to holding space and just being with. I often reflect on this when supervising others who help people through crisis and pain and suffering. I remain grateful for the experience that framed the entirety of my career.
