WCU Counseling Program

WCU Counseling Program The Counseling program at WCU offers two Master’s degrees in the following areas, School Counseling and Clinical Mental Health Counseling.

The WCU graduate programs in clinical mental health counseling and school counseling are in the Department of Human Services within the College of Education and Allied Professions.

Mission: The mission of the WCU counseling programs is to subscribe to the standards of CACREP and prepare ethically bound professional counselors for entry-level counseling positions in agency and school settings. The faculty teach and supervise across program areas and focus on excellence in the preparation of professional counselors regardless of the setting in which they will be employed. Instruction in counseling is founded upon commitment to the belief that individuals are valuable, responsible, and capable and that counselor’s work to create the conditions in which people prize themselves as human beings and act accordingly. The counseling faculty is committed to creating teaching-learning environments that encourage the active participation of students. Students are invited to join faculty in advocating for clients’ and human rights and for professionalism which requires adequate reflection and careful consideration of the interest and welfare of the persons affected by their decisions. Page Policies: The College of Education and Allied Profession's (CEAP) Diversity Dialogue page encourages active discussion and sharing of information and thoughts. However, content that includes profanity, personal attacks, commercial promotions, election campaign materials or is otherwise deemed inappropriate will be deleted by the page administrators.

It's an honor each year to recognize a WCU Counseling student who exemplifies the thoughtfulness, devotion, and impeccable integrity of my mom. I am very pleased to announce the 2019 Carole Hearn Curtis Award recipient, Jennifer Sutherlin. (So Jennifer, stand up straight and speak when spoken to or you WILL get thumped on the head by the ghost of Carole Curtis)

2018 Break by the Lake conference! Always a rejuvenating connection among WNC professionals and WCU counseling alumni and students. Just a few snapshots to capture a fraction of the wonderful day: Mary Deck awards Megan the 2018-2019 Mary Deck/Break by the Lake scholarship; alumni Monica and Hanna (among lots of alumni!) present a session; students Rachel, Courtney, Megan, and Mike (among 21 students!) await a session. Thank you to all who attended and especially the BBL Planning Committee and co-chairs Drs. Elizabeth Graves and Phyllis Robertson!
