Veterans Healing Farm

Veterans Healing Farm

Veterans Healing Farm has recently suffered our second 100-year flood that has devastated our plantings, equipment, supplies and thousands of hours of volunteer labor.

We are committed to rebuilding and replanting so that our 2018 produce donations, veterans training programs and nurturing community can continue. So that we can come back even stronger than we did in the past 2 weeks and that our community comes together in an even more powerful way.

We need your help. Please help support our mission by contributing to this cause. https://www.gofundme.com/veterans-healing-farm-flooding-fund

All are welcome to stop by the Sherrill Center Deck this evening from 4-6pm for the Transportation Office's Car Check. Every semester, the Transportation Office along with PEPAH/Health & Counseling Center sponsor vehicle safety check for the campus community. It is free and open to all UNC Asheville Bulldogs and their vehicles!

They will top off fluids (oil, coolant, windshield washer fluids), check/inflate your tires, and if you have a check-engine light on, they can pull/identify the problem code for you.

They normally have a technician or two donated by Walker Tire for the event. If you can't make it today, no worries - they will be doing everything again tomorrow from 4-6PM!

In case you're interested, TheatreUNCA Mainstage is bringing "Welcome Home, Jenny Sutter" to UNC Asheville this semester.

"Welcome Home, Jenny Sutter", by Julie Marie Myatt, is presented by special arrangement with SAMUEL FRENCH, INC.
Directed by Lise Kloeppel

Reintegration into society after the experiences of war is oftentimes very difficult for those in the military. After all the action, devastation and noise, everyday life may be quite the challenge. For U.S. Marine Jenny Sutter this is certainly true. Haunted by her war experience and not quite ready to pick up where she left off, Jenny takes a side trip to Slab City - "The Last Free Place on Earth," a place for societal misfits who prefer to live outside the norm, do as they please and not interfere with the liberty of others. It is here where the permanent residents help Jenny heal her internal war wounds and gently persuade her to rejoin society and return to her children.

Performances: March 1st, 2nd and 3rd at 7:30pm and March 4th at 2:00pm.

Ticket prices: $12 General Admission, $10 Faculty/Military Veterans/Senior Citizens (must have military ID), $7 students/ OLLI members (taxes and fees not included).

MRE (Meals Ready to Eat) Fundraising Dinner for UNC Asheville's Veterans Alliance

Just a friendly reminder about Veterans Appreciation Week 2017 - and an adjustment to the schedule.

1. Tonight's bonfire has been CANCELLED because of the rain we have received this week. As soon as the Veterans Alliance determines a new date and time to reschedule this event, I will send an update.

2. The student panel scheduled for Thursday is still set -- please join us at 6 p.m. in Brown Hall, room 217 to hear the perspectives and experiences of some of our veteran students.

3. Tickets are still on sale for Friday evening's MRE Fundraiser (6-8 p.m. in the Veterans Center for Excellence). Please consider joining us for this final event for Veterans Appreciation Week 2017 -- and if you can't make it, please consider making a donation. Registrations and donations are online at https://mrefundraiser.eventbrite.com. This is a great opportunity to meet some amazing veteran students and get to know them on a personal level.

Thanks -- and hope to see you Thursday and Friday!

Here are just a few pics from the start of UNC Asheville's Veterans Appreciation Week 2017 (today we placed Flags on the Quad to honor currently enlisted service members and veterans).

A new book has just been released by a local author about his experiences serving in Vietnam and his journey through personal discovery, identity and advocacy.

Based on his 1966 diary, John Whiteside recounts life in the base camp of the 101st Airborne Division in Vietnam. While the airborne troops faced the Viet Cong guerrillas and North Vietnam soldiers, Whitener (then a closeted gay man) faced the war within himself, struggling to reconcile his fundamentalist Christian upbringing and his sexuality. He credits the American War in Vietnam as the catalyst for his activism for gay rights and career in public health in Washington, D.C.

Don’t Ask and I Will Tell is available for purchase at Malaprop’s Bookstore/Café in Asheville, N.C., or at Amazon.com.
