Yancey County artist Mel Chin wins $625,000 MacArthur 'genius grant'

Congratulations to Mel Chin! Chin was UNC Asheville's Black Mountain College Legacy Fellow for the fall of 2017 and he began a project here that grew... took over STEAM Studio... stretched into the summer of 2018, and truly stretched the minds and skills (and yes, the stamina!) of students, faculty and staff with a vision that became the largest public art work ever to be displayed in New York City's Times Square.

Working with Chin to create the work and traveling to New York to install it was an unforgettable experience for our students, faculty, staff and community artists. Together with Chin, they gave the millions who visited Times Square that summer food for thought about the environment, commerce, history, and our future.

Complementing the Times Square 'built at UNC Asheville' creation was a summer-long retrospective of Chin's lifetime of work, presented by three New York City arts institutions. And now Chin, who calls Western North Carolina home, has been recognized with a MacArthur Foundation Fellowship - the so-called genius grant.

You can read more about Mel Chin's work with UNC Asheville below!

Mel Chin's created ecological installations in landfills, immersive virtual reality exhibitions in Times Square and carpets based on satellite telemetry.
