Lookout Observatory

You may recall that earlier this year, the first confirmed detection of gravitational waves was announced by the Laser Interferometer Gravitational-Wave Observatory (LIGO). This detection, which came 100 years after Einstein predicted the existence of gravitational waves, was a monumental discovery.

Tom Carruthers, who oversaw the LIGO facility for eight years, will be speaking about the discovery tomorrow, October 6th, 12:00 - 1:00 p.m. in the Humanities Lecture Hall on the UNC Asheville campus. The presentation is free and open to the public, so please join us to learn more about the origins of gravitational waves, how LIGO was able to detect them, and the implications for astronomy and astrophysics!

Unresolved Resolutions And Arrhythmic Rhythms

Friday, September 30, 2016 - 7:00pm
Lipinsky Lobby - UNC Asheville Campus

Dr. John Steffa, retired from teaching, is a free-lance ASCAP composer and cellist and, with his wife, Nancy Steffa, lives in the beautiful mountains of Western North Carolina. Having been awarded several institutional research grants to experience, record and study indigenous music of non-Western musical cultures – Mountain Village Folk Music of Taiwan and The Folk Music of Bahia – to name two, he fuses elements of those traditions with his own harmonic and rhythmic vocabulary. His Festival Diversion for flute and piano also includes an optional “Intro” and “Outro” recording from a Peruvian harvest festival. In his music, Dr. Steffa’s intention is never to merely reproduce the folk music he has experienced but rather to create new works inspired by those traditions. Other pieces on this program, Kinesis 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 for example, are exercises in working through abstract motives and ideas. Although some works are lyrical, the listener should also be prepared for complex rhythms, unusual scale forms and deceptive pitch resolutions. In addition to local performers, the recital features artists from Georgia, Florida, and Kentucky.

Free and Open to the public.
