Hey Bobcats! Welcome to model member Monday! Maddie Denny is a first year student, majoring in political science.

Maddie is most passionate about LGBTQIA+ rights, Medicare for all, reproductive rights, racial justice, and environmental justice. After taking just a few political sciences courses she learned how important it is to be politically active - vote at every possible opportunity, reach out to members of congress, read up on policy, learn how those policies affect yourself and others, and encourage others to do the same. 2020 was the first time Maddie had the opportunity to vote in a presidential election, and although Joe Biden wasn't her first choice (fun fact: in 2019, she drove to South Bend to watch Pete Buttigieg announce he was running), she was still super excited to vote for him and is even more excited to see what he will do during his time in the Oval Office. She's so stoked to be on campus as soon as it's safe and is looking forward to working with OU College Democrats for the rest of her undergrad career!

Good afternoon Dems! For this lovely Monday we will be hearing from Grant Perry, our Treasurer and a second year perusing a duel degree in environmental geography and political science.
"This fall I had the privilege of serving as the Volunteer Coordinator for the Lucas County Democratic Party in Toledo, OH. My main responsibility was to recruit and assign volunteers to different campaign activities such as phone banking, text banking, and literature dispersal at polling locations and the Early Vote Center for voters to review on their way in. With the election over I now serve as a staffer for the party office. This job has been a great learning experience and I am so grateful to have been given the opportunity!"

Happy model member Monday! Today we will be hearing from Chloe Ruffennach, a senior strategic communications major:
“I work for Student Affairs Communication and Marketing as a social media coordinator, and I’m nearly halfway through my senior year here at Ohio University. I study strategic communication and hope to use my experience from Student Affairs and being the former communications director of OUCD when searching for a career in the next few months. Both positions have allowed me to bring attention to social issues that I’m passionate about, such as diverse representation and climate change all while giving me experience in the field I want to enter. Like many, I was shaped by the horrible precedent the Trump administration set, and these past few years have taught me the importance of strategic messaging and branding especially on social media. Even with the former administration shadowing my college experience, I have learned so much during my time at OHIO and met many friends, most of which I can credit OUCD for. This organization has set me on the path I am now, and I’ll be forever grateful for the lessons I’ve learned during my membership.”

Oh hey, it's a model member Monday! Check out Mady Nutter, a junior from Cincinnati, OH studying journalism strategic communication with a specialization in women’s, gender, and sexuality studies and a minor in public health.
"I’m passionate about reproductive justice, sex education, LGBTQIA+ rights, racial justice, and prison abolition. At OU, I’m the political director of OUCD, a certified peer health educator with power gamma, and the VP of Generation Action. This summer, I had the pleasure of being a social media intern for Kate Schroder to help flip OH-1 blue! It was such an incredible experience working with Kate’s team and learning more about campaign work, social media strategizing and graphic design. I encourage anyone who is interested in politics to get involved with your county party or any local elections in your district— there are so many people eager to mentor, so many connections and networks to build, and so many new skills to learn!"

Dems! Check out Camryn Smith our model member for this lovely Monday:

"I’m a second year social work major and minoring in WGSS and sociology.
I transferred to OU this semester and joined OUCD because I was really looking for a home base at OU where I could meet people who hold the same values as I do. As I’ve learned more about the social work field the importance of having people in office who care about the greater good has become so apparent to me. Learning about the inner workings of the systems that put so many members of our communities at a disadvantage has made me even more passionate about change. Social welfare programs provide so much necessary support and I think it’s imperative we elect politicians who want to continue funding those programs."

It's time for another alumni spotlight; let's hear from John Haseley:
"I started at OU as an English major wanting to become the next Hemingway, but after getting involved politically with the College Dems and the Athens County Dem. Party, my plans changed. By my junior year, I went to DC for an internship on the Hill, and never went back to OU. Through DC internships, I got enough credits for my OU degree and went on to GW Law School at night. Since then, I've worked as a counsel to Sen. John Glenn, a Chief of Staff both in Congress and in the Ohio Governor's Office and have been involved in all sorts of campaigns. My experience at OU changed the direction of my life. I'm now a partner in a consulting firm and a law firm in Columbus, and live in Athens where it all began for me. When I returned to Athens after 25 years, it seemed natural to take on the Chairmanship of the County Dem. Party and I'm thrilled to have a strong working partnership with the OU College Dems."

Hey Dems, it's Model Member Monday! Let's hear from Savannah Boll a 4th year nursing student:

"I got involved with OUCD my sophomore year and have made some of my best friends from it! I joined OUCD because they share the same passions and beliefs that I do, and I wanted to be surrounded by people who felt the same way as I do. As a nursing student and a Democrat who believes in science I have experienced first hand how serious COVID can be. Nursing students are sacrificing a lot right now including some weeknights and our Saturday nights at the hospital helping out the staff and getting hours in learning more about how to care for patients. Since August I have watched the number of patients with Covid get larger and larger. Just last night we had 4 people admitted to the ER who tested positive for it. I am voting Democrat because I want someone leading our country who believes in science and is going to have my back as a healthcare worker, especially right now."

Happy (model member) Monday! Let's hear about Haley today:
Haley Janoski is a sophomore majoring in communication studies and Spanish. Haley is highly involved on campus, serving as both the OUCD Membership Director and the Honors Tutorial College Senator within Student Senate. She is very passionate about student engagement—both on campus and politically—and works to inform her peers on campus events and the voting process for this election. The virtual nature of this semester has made this outreach more difficult, but her work has persisted in full-swing. Early this semester she worked as a student recruiter for the Safe Elections Project, educating students on the need for poll workers and their role in the election and encouraging them to sign up. As Election Day nears, Haley continues to put her communication skills to work, writing inserts regarding voting reminders and resources, which are then distributed through her college’s weekly newsletter emails as well has her professors’ emails to students. She believes any bit of effort put forward to increase student voting knowledgeability is extremely valuable and is looking forward to serving as a poll worker on Election Day!

Happy Model Member Monday! Today we will be hearing from Hailey gifford, a sophomore political science pre-law major.

"This semester I am serving as the member coordinator for OU’s branch of the ACLU. The ACLU-OU helps to educate Ohio University students on a wide range of topics like LGBTQ+ Rights, Reproductive Justice, and Environmental Justice. We have also been able to work with the ACLU of Ohio on more education campaigns across the state. I am also serving as a team captain on the OU Mock Trial team where our members learn and engage with the law and have the opportunity to compete against other teams with the case we have built. Both of these organizations offer a great way to be involved on campus and learn about important issues, especially in today’s political climate!"

Good afternoon! Get ready for another Model Member Monday! Katie Gold is a junior major in communication studies with minor in journalism and political science.

"This year I have the pleasure of serving as the deputy director of the ACLU student group at OU. Our organization has been able to get involved in wider organizing and education campaigns the ACLU is doing nationally. In addition, I am in my third year as a competitor on the Ohio University Speech and Debate Team while also serving as their social media director. While we are virtual, we are still able to compete across the country and present important speeches to advocate for wider change. I also serve as the President of the Political Communication club on campus and work as a learning community leader and TA."

Happy Friday Dems! Today is our first alumni spotlight, and we are highlighting Stu Adams:
"So I actually didn’t join OUCD until my senior year. I was running our Bobcats for Bernie Sanders chapter for the 2016 primary, when a few members of OUCD -- who were attending one of our weekly meetings -- asked me why I wasn’t a member. It was a good question. One I didn’t have a good answer for. So, from then on, I became a consistent member. Never in any kind of leadership capacity, but trying to lend a hand wherever I could. And I can tell you right now: I wouldn’t be where I am today if I didn’t join my senior year. At one of our last meetings of the year, the OUCD President came up to me and said the Ohio House Democratic Caucus had reached out to him, and wondered if there was anyone in the College Dems who would be a good fit for a Campaign Manager position for a state house race. He recommended I applied, and so I did. That first job (that I eventually got with the OHDC) was the domino that got me to the job I have today -- which I absolutely love. Currently, I’m the Deputy Caucus Director for Iowa’s House Truman Fund -- the organization dedicated to taking back a Democratic majority in the Iowa House. Just four seats away from a majority, the work our organization does has the potential to make lasting impacts on this state for generations to come -- like protecting our state’s non-partisan redistricting, reversing the privatization of medicaid, bringing down the cost of prescription drugs, and a lot more. But I can confidently say the job opportunity I got through OUCD gave me an appreciation for the impact that state house politics can make, and I couldn’t be more grateful for that. I’d encourage everyone to get involved in OUCD (even if you’re not a freshman!), local politics in Athens County, and to reach out if you have any questions on steps to take after graduation."

Happy Model Member Monday! Today we are hearing from Jane Roche a sophomore political science pre-law major:
"This semester I've been working very closely with the OU Mock Trial team as their new member coordinator. We've been working on ways to not only engage students with our organization, but with the Center for Law, Justice, and Culture as a whole. In today's political climate it's imperative that students explore their legal resources as well as educate themselves on broader political and legal issues. Just this past week the CLJC hosted a lecture about systemic racism in education and policing. Lectures like these are vital in educating a wider range of people so we can all become better citizens and advocates. I would highly encourage anyone who is interested in learning more about how they can be a more informed citizen and ally to interact with the Center for Law, Justice, and Culture. Get involved and stay informed!"

On this lovely Monday we will he highlighting Meah McCallister as our Model Member! Here is what she has to say about he recent work and passions: "Over the summer, I began my internship with the Athens County Democratic Party. I had worked with the party in 2018 when I was the phone bank captain so it was nice to see all the wonderful, familiar faces. I joined a number of committees including the neighborhood, communication, and social media committees. We’ve worked on a ton of different projects such as revamping our website (athensdems.org), organizing phone and text banking, routinely putting out reliable voting information, and made the office at 74 East St. safe and socially distanced! It’s awesome to work with the college Dems too, we have so many opportunities for people to get involved remotely. The election is rapidly approaching, get fired up!!"

Hey Dems, welcome to our first Model Member Monday of the semester! Today we will be highlighting @maddiiekramer; here is what she has to say about her work: "I am the Athens County Manager for the Newby for Congress campaign, meaning I'm the middle man between Joel and the Athens county area. I have been doing most of my work with the county party and OUCD of course! I signed on to the campaign in November, but due to covid craziness was brought back on in June. Since then I have been working with volunteers to complete campaign postcards going to Fairfield county, managed yard signs in the Athens county area, and worked with the county party. I have also worked with OUCD and other OU organizations in efforts to get students to register and vote in Athens. Furthermore, I have been contacting other SE Ohio Democratic candidates to make it a coordinated effort to get democrats elected. It has definitely been a different campaign year, but we are navigating that!"

Welcome back, Dems! For our final Model Member Monday post of the year, we will be taking a look at Jade Pettey, Jane Roche and Lucy Thompson, who recently became freshman cohorts for the Margaret Boyd Scholars Program. When asked about this honor, Jade said, "My experience in the MBSP has been amazing so far! I’ve made connections with professors and administrators, and I've gained academic guidance, confidence and friendships with an extraordinary group of other freshman women! The program has been a highlight of my time at OU, and I’m thankful to all those involved in its creation for recognizing how much a program like this could benefit young women like myself."Jane also talked about the benefits of both Margaret Boyd and OUCD, and she said, "Being a part of Margaret Boyd and OUCD gives me the opportunity to learn strength as a leader. Surrounding myself with such powerful and wonderful women has taught me what it means to be strong and compassionate." Finally, Lucy talked about how Margaret Boyd has been beneficial for her personally. She said, "Margaret Boyd Scholars has given me access to amazing people and resources on campus. This has allowed me to feel that my voice is heard and my goals are supported by the many amazing women on campus."
