The University of Georgia Alumni Association was founded in 1834 as the Alumni Society and was the fourth organization of former students to be created by any institution of higher learning in America and the first Alumni Society in the South. The name was changed to The UGA National Alumni Association in 1996. The name changed to The UGA Alumni Association in 1999. The Board of Directors serves in an advisory capacity to the Association's Executive Committee. These governing bodies are made up of 55 alumni working to promote, support and advance the programs and services provided by the Alumni Association to the UGA community. The family of a beloved faculty member in the Odum School of Ecology is honoring her memory with the creation of the Sharitz-Hatfield Fellowship, which will support graduate students following in the professor's footsteps.

The Dr. Rebecca Reyburn Sharitz and Carl Byrne Hatfield Fellowship Fund will provide support for doctoral candidates in ecology or plant biology at the University of Georgia.

Over the course of her career she has won teaching awards, advised graduate students, and received research accolades. She has also been a strong supporter of the AdPR department through giving. To celebrate her retirement, she and her husband Dan have established the Karen W. and Daniel J. King Distinguished Professorship in Advertising.
