Founded in the spring of 1997 when four students (Usha Raman, Elfriede Fursich, Soon-Chul Shin and Carolina Acosta-Alzuru) and Dr. Elli Lester Roushanzamir spent a quarter reading critical and cultural academic scholarship. As a result of their studies, the group organized a roundtable discussion in the Grady College: "What is cultural studies, anyway?" (title was copied from Richard Johnson's seminal article). This was a significant "intervention" since back then Grady didn't have a single course dealing with Critical and cultural studies. In 1999, the Culture Club became the Critical Media Studies Interest Group, an official student organization at UGA. We still call it the Culture Club. The CC has brought accomplished scholars as guests to Grady. Among them: Jack Lule, Radhika Parameswaran, Melinda Robbins, Angharad Valdivia, Aswin Punathambekar, and Susan Douglas.
