The Heritage College Society of Alumni & Friends asked Ohio University Heritage College of Osteopathic Medicine graduates “What would you say to yourself as a student to help you make it through finals?”

We emailed these Words of Wisdom (and many, many more!) to our OMS-1 and OMS-2 students to let them know they have a big support system as they prepare for their final exams.

The COVID-19 pandemic has changed many things in healthcare. Take a listen to Scott Yoho, DO ('11), a central Ohio psychiatrist, as he talks about isolation, depression and tele-medicine. We're so proud of the care and leadership our graduates are providing! #ThankfulThursday

CORONAVIRUS & MENTAL HEALTH: As a result of the quarantine, people are focusing more on their mental health. While that's a very good thing, it's not always something you can, or should, handle on your own. So where do you turn for help and guidance? Especially when face to face consults are not possible? Robyn Haines is talking with the Medical Director of Emerald Psychiatry, Dr. Scott Yoho for advice.

"especially this April" 💕

We welcome every opportunity to show our osteopathic pride, no matter what time of year. But April – and especially this April – marks a special time for raising awareness of the profession. While a member of the Ohio House of Representatives, State Sen. Terry Johnson, D.O., a 1991 graduate of our medical school and clinical assistant dean at Southern Ohio Medical Center, put forth a bill designating April as Osteopathic Medicine Recognition Month in the state to honor the "significant contributions made by the osteopathic field of medicine to improve the health of Ohioans." To Ohio's osteopathic physicians and organizations, our alumni, our students, and our faculty and staff, we’re proud to celebrate all that you do every day for our state and our residents. You're a shining example of why CARE LEADS HERE. #OhioDOmonth

On this #NationalDoctorsDay, we're working to send a little love to all you great physicians out there leading on the front lines of the #COVID19 pandemic. We're proud of you today - and every day!

Especially during these challenging times, we appreciate our alumni, our clinical partners and all other health care workers and essential service providers who are on the front lines fighting the COVID-19 pandemic. Please know we are incredibly grateful for the work you're doing for our communities, our families and us. #CareLeadsHere

It's been a busy time at Ohio University Heritage College of Osteopathic Medicine - and we know it's been even busier for our alumni. Keep leading with care!

Here at the Heritage College, we lead with care. Our teams have been working around the clock to make sure our students can finish the semester strong, as scheduled, after the COVID-19 pandemic caused in-person classes to be suspended and our employees to work remotely.

We’re ready for our first- and second-year students to begin remote instruction on Monday. Despite some disruption, our third- and fourth-year clinical curriculum will continue very soon after we, along with most Ohio medical schools, decided to suspend rotations. Thanks to some quick planning from our curriculum leaders and faculty, we’ve organized four weeks of remote instruction for our 500 third- and fourth-year students so they can remain on course to complete their program on time. And should it be needed, we’ll be prepared with a clinically useful curriculum until students can return to regular rotations.

Our student leaders have been instrumental during these quick conversions, and our faculty and staff have stepped up with creativity, stamina and resilience as we’ve worked through the challenges. It’s a work in progress for sure, but we couldn’t be more grateful and proud of how everyone has come together to create the best academic experience possible. We may not be physically in Grosvenor, MEB1 or SPS, but we’re committed to making sure you’re informed, supported and in touch with the college and each other, no matter how long this situation lasts. So please keep an eye on your email for updates. Call your colleagues. We’ll continue to get through this together.

What memories do you have of Dr. Thompson?

When Harold Clayton “Clay” Thompson III, D.O., first laid eyes on Athens County, Ohio, in 1977, he was recently married, a year out of medical school in Chicago, and fresh from an internship at a New York hospital. He figured he’d put in some time in the emergency department of Mt. St. Mary’...

Some of our future alums had some great things to share last night at the 2nd Annual Behind the White Coat (think The Moth podcast meets medical students). Powerful stories that shape perspective on life, love, in/justice, and care for self and others. The future of medicine is in good hands!

“We believe that everyone has a story to tell. We believe in the power of human connection through storytelling. We believe that as medical students, the ability to reach out a hand of connection through the haze of stress, pressure and exhaustion is vital to our well-being.”

That’s how Aiesha Polakampalli, OMS-II, and Sami Nandyal, OMS-III, described the reasons for the 2nd Annual Behind the White Coat 2020: Catharsis. During last night’s event at Walter Hall Rotunda in Athens, 12 medical students shared intimate and personal stories live on stage. Inspired by “The Moth” Podcast,” Aiesha and Sami organized this event for the last two years to allow students to share their stories with the intent of fostering community and enhancing connections.

Thank you to the Barbara Geralds Institute for Storytelling and Social Impact at the Ohio University Scripps College of Communication for sponsoring this event! #CareLeadsHere

Training the next generation and getting them excited about #college and #medschool. This is a glimpse at the future of the osteopathic profession!

Last week, we welcomed 40 Columbus City Schools students from many different immigrant and refugee backgrounds to our Dublin campus during our Student National Medical Association’s Medical Student for a Day event. Throughout the day, these students from the Ethiopian Tewahedo Social Services-ETSS' AMP and After School programs took part in hands-on learning activities in the anatomy lab and Clinical Training and Assessment Center, worked through a case and learned about the college admissions process. Our thanks to community partner ETSS for letting us be part of your professional development day for students! #CareLeadsHere

Understanding the social determinants of health is a hallmark of osteopathic medicine, and we’re proud to be a leader in this area. At the American Osteopathic Association's OMED 2019 this weekend, one of our faculty members will bring the social medicine message to students and residents. Daniel Skinner, Ph.D., the only titled professor of health policy on the faculty of any U.S. osteopathic medical school, has been asked by the Student Osteopathic Medical Association (SOMA) to speak to the group about “Addressing Health Disparities” and “Social Medicine and Osteopathic Identify: American Health Care at a Crossroads.”

“There’s a hunger for this kind of information among students across the osteopathic medical world,” Skinner reports, as more and more students realize what a huge role social factors play in health care outcomes. One message Skinner wants to convey is that students and residents should “know what the neighborhood health outcomes look like where they’ll be training,” looking at issues such as housing conditions and neighborhood safety. In that spirit, Skinner plans to use maps showing neighborhood-by-neighborhood conditions in Baltimore, where OMED 2019 takes place. #CareLeadsHere #OMED2019
