S. Sonny Kim, an associate professor in the University of Georgia College of Engineering, has been named 2021 Georgia Engineer of the Year by the Georgia Society of Professional Engineers (GSPE).
Presented annually by GSPE, the Engineer of the Year Awards honor licensed engineers who have made outstanding contributions to the engineering profession, the public welfare, and humankind.
“It is my great honor to be selected for this remarkable honor,” said Kim. “It would have not been possible without the strong support and assistance from my amazing colleagues and students.”
Kim’s teaching and research is focused on sustainable infrastructure and materials, saltmarsh restoration, and the use of nondestructive testing, remote sensing, and machine learning in infrastructure monitoring.

Hawkinsville continues to take advantage of their branding work with the UGA Carl Vinson Institute of Government. Hawkinsville debuted their billboards and other items with their “Come Home” brand back in the spring but with Covid in mind, recently unveiled a facemask with the historic Hawkinsville cupola and the Come Home logo on it as well.
Archway Partnership funding partner the Hawkinsville-Pulaski County Chamber of Commerce is responsible for the merchandise around the brand & the masks have proven to be a popular item.

Members enrolled in our Coastal Region Management Development Program renovated Glynn County Juvenile Court’s evidence-based group counseling room as their class community service learning project. Chief Probation Officer Ed Reilly thanked the class members in a video.

Members of the Institute's Planning and Environmental Services unit, faculty Danny Bivins and Langford Holbrook along with designers Kaitlin Messich and Clark Stancil, discussed implementation of the Chickamauga Renaissance Strategic Visioning and Planning with a crowd of 40+ citizens and steering committee members. Georgia Representative Steve Tarvin, Ethan Calhoun with the Northwest Georgia Regional Commission, and numerous local officials generously gave their time to attend the presentation. These economic development planning efforts are supported by a grant from the Lyndhurst Foundation. #CivicEngagement
