Diversity Studies Certificate Program

Mission: The Diversity Studies Certificate is an interdisciplinary certificate program that is available to any undergraduate student in the University to complement and enhance a student’s general education, academic major and/or career preparation. We live in a world that is becoming more and more complex at the same time it is becoming “smaller and smaller” as we have more access to others whose identities and cultures are different than our own personal background and identities. Given the unique historical circumstances of the United States, it is critical that well-rounded educated individuals understand the historical, political, sociological and legal contexts within the United States and their impact on our contemporary issues in diversity.

Concepts to understand because they impact actual lives...

There is often some confusion on what imperialism means. We look towards understandings provided by Lenin, Franz Fanon, and Kwame Nkrumah to give us a foundational theory from which we can derive practice.

#TransParenting NBA star Dwyane Wade and his wife Gabrielle Union are really showing the world how to parent LGBTQ plus children. When their daughter Zaya told them that she identifies as transgender the parents set out to find the best ways possible to support her and even reached out to a number of well known transgender celebrities for advice and Zaya herself has received a lot of support since her gender identity became public. When a picture of her was shown on a jumbotron at a basketball game, the crowd erupted into rounds of applause.

BREAKING NEWS: the so-called Vulnerable Child Protection Act (HB 513) has been formally introduced in Ohio. This legislation, if passed, will penalize medical professionals in Ohio for providing gender-affirming medical care and treatment to transgender or nonbinary persons under 18 years of age, including “inforcing or affirming a minor's perception [of their] gender identity when that identity is inconsistent with the minor's biological sex” with a fine up to $10,000, a prison sentence up to 36 months (3 years), and suspension or permanent revocation of their license to practice in the state.

Call your elected representives and tell them why this bill does not help vulnerable children; it creates them.
