Do you follow us on Instagram? If not, here is this week's post about alumna Ruby Williams ('19) and her time in Nepal!

Margaret Boyd alumnae go on to do incredible work both in the United States and abroad. Alumna Ruby Williams ('19) has been working with the non-profit Conscious Impact for about three months in Nepal. Her formal role with Conscious Impact surrounds collaborating with and coordinating the youth empowerment programs, but she has also had the opportunity to help in the organic farming and natural building spaces. Great job Ruby!

So proud of our Margaret Boyd Scholars and their participation in this amazing experience.

In 2015, Ohio University graduate and Wyoming resident Ralph Haberfeld had an epiphany that has connected two distinct, picturesque places: Athens, Ohio, in the Appalachian foothills, and Jackson Hole, bordering western Wyoming’s Teton Range.

Our scholars have a variety of interests both inside and outside of their majors. Here’s today’s #scholarspotlight Claire!(Center) She entered the MBSP studying journalism, but three years later, is now studying media & social change. She hopes to take her knowledge of nonfiction storytelling and put it towards documentary filmmaking. She has worked with Vice News and HBO in the past and cannot wait to see what future opportunities bring! Taking a break from technology in the Grayson Highlands helped to keep her grounded, and showed her how important balance is in her life. #margaretboyd

Applications for our 2020 cohort are due in just two weeks! Check out our #scholarspotlight Abby Harder on why the MBSP matters to her.

"I’m a senior studying multimedia design with a certificate in global leadership. I’m from Olmsted Falls (Cleveland area) and after graduation I want to go into higher education counseling.

MBSP matters to me because it has given me the connections to inspiring, ambitious and driven women from all different backgrounds. We all have a desire to make the world a better place and different approaches of doing so, which helps us support and uplift each other in our different endeavors. Best decision I’ve made in college!!

Alumna Tyann Carter, '17, says her favorite part of the Margaret Boyd Scholars Program is the support she received from fellow Maggie Bs and others involved in the program. Read her story here:

Currently I'm at home in Cleveland working at a doggy day care (Camp Bow Wow) and preparing to take some classes in the spring and summer to finish up my degree. I also just got accepted into the Disney College Program so I will be heading to Florida in January for the duration of spring semester to do some awesome networking and resume building! And I honestly can't wait! What I enjoyed most about the program was the support. Because whether or not I needed it or pursued it, it was always there for me in so many different ways. Even people I thought knew nothing about MBSP had my back and it was really awesome to be apart of such a great and growing support group full of awesome people. And even though I'm not on campus anymore I know that there are still people I can talk to and hangout with.

Margaret Boyd Scholars are exposed to opportunities that could guide their future career goals. Here is alumna Emily Quinn, '17, on her post-graduate experiences:

Since graduating OU in April of 2017 I’ve spent my time trying as many new things as I can possibly get my hands on. I moved to New Orleans after graduating to do social media work at a non-profit with Susanne Dietzel, then after that three month position ended I immediately moved to New York City to work on a feature film. I gained a sense of direction after that job and decided to see what kind of work I could do in the production industry. In January of this past year I started a job at HBO as an office PA in the documentary department. I was on a team with five other people – director, producers, another PA – five to six days a week, working from pre-production to post-production over the course of seven months. We wrapped the show in early August, and I’m hoping we’ll be able to get started on another soon. The end of senior year was a frantic time, full of uncertainty and possibility. I was completely overwhelmed by both. I had no sense of direction for my post-grad life until I sat down with the other Boyd Scholars for a seminar with Dr. Dietzel. She told us about the non-profit she worked at in Nola and mentioned that they offered internships. It was this position that sprung me to where I am now. Margaret Boyd gave me the opportunity I didn’t know I needed to find my footing in the “Real World.”

The Margaret Boyd Scholars Program helps women make connections and learn about experiences they may not have otherwise known about. Alum Olivia Cobb shared her experience with the program, and how it helped lead her to where she is today:

"Salaam alikum, and hello from Morocco! My name is Olivia Cobb, I’m a recent graduate and Margaret Boyd alum. I am currently serving as a youth development volunteer with Peace Corps Morocco. My experience with Margaret Boyd is full of laughter, love, and good advice. The summer before my fourth year I was an intern with Eden House in New Orleans, a half way house for women coming out of human trafficking, through a 100% Margaret Boyd connection. That experience, combined with the encouragement and shared experience of Boyd advisors and peers, led me to the Peace Corps. In fact, I even had my first Skype interview in the Margaret Boyd lounge! Being in a space created to cultivate empowered feminine relationships gave me so much love to fall back on and made all the difference for me. Margaret Boyd helped me to find my people, and to find those weird parts of myself that had been worn off along the way. I am infinitely grateful to the Margaret Boyd Scholars🇲🇦"

The Margaret Boyd Scholars Program not only connects scholars with other women on campus, but also to faculty and administration. Here's Sue Ryu, junior, on what the MBSP has given her:

"I joined Margaret Boyd freshman year because I was new and wanted to meet new people. It is very lucky that MBSP happened to me, because not only did it introduce me to 19 other women in my year, but also to OU faculty and administration members that have personally guided me through the past three years. I also got introduced to this big imagined community of women everywhere, and I finally understood what it meant to be a part of this. Being a woman is oppression and injustice, but it is also unapologetic confidence, diversity, and strength. Being a Maggie B has meant new friends and new understandings of my own identity and I couldn't be prouder to be a part of the MBSP!"

Not only have MBSP Alumnae traveled throughout the United States, but they have even gone global! Claire Seid's, '17, journey took her to the Czech Republic after graduation! Here's her story:

"After graduation from Ohio University Honors Tutorial College and the Margaret Boyd Scholars Program, I served a Fulbright Award teaching English in the deep forest of the Czech Republic at a forestry school. There, I taught students age 15-20 who were training to be foresters, lumberjacks, and vets. After a year there, I returned, officially married my partner, and am now working in the Head Injury Research Center at Cincinnati Children's Hospital doing research on pediatric acquired traumatic brain injury, and singing with Muse Feminist Choir. The MBSP helped me get connected to people who could help me achieve my dreams and gave me so many friendships along the way!"

Applications are due TOMORROW! Be sure to submit one today!

Homecoming week is here at OU! Margaret Boyd alumnae have traveled far and wide since their graduations, but continue to hold the MBSP close to their hearts. Here is Gracie Keyes, '17, who is now in Colorado!

"I am currently working at a private oil and gas company in Denver, Colorado as a "Land and GIS Tech." I do legal and mapping work for the company's land department. I have learned so much so far and am thrilled to see where this position takes me. Living so close to world class recreation in the Front Range and elsewhere in the Rocky Mountains is amazing, and often makes me feel like I'm living in a fairytale! I truly believe that if I hadn't found the MBSP as a freshman in college I wouldn't be where I am today. The program truly fostered my ambitious, "just go for it" spirit as a young woman by providing me a space in a group of like-minded women with equally as big dreams and hopes for their futures. I went through the toughest year of my life as a freshman in college. But the Margaret Boyd's truly rallied around me and supported me. I will always be thankful for that."

With Homecoming approaching, we wanted to highlight some of our alumnae and where the MBSP and OU have taken them! Here is Cassie Rich, '18:
"I’m studying School Psychology at Radford University for my Masters & Ed.S. My cohort is all women, and school psychology is a 77% female field, so it’s really cool to see the impact women can have in the workforce. Margaret Boyd taught me to be a leader and advocate for myself. I also learned how to find my place in new settings and the importance of community involvement. I am so lucky to have played a role in such an amazing organization.
Here is a picture with me & Henrietta Lacks at the National Portrait Gallery! (Margaret Boyd Scholars participated in a common reading of “The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks” by Rebecca Skloot)"

Applications are due in a week, so be sure to visit our website and apply today!

Margaret Boyd Scholars Alumni go on to incredible programs and careers after graduation. Alumna Mara Díaz says she would not be where she is today without MBSP:
"I am currently in my first semester in my masters program at West Virginia University. I am studying Integrated Marketing Communications. I am also applying everything I learn in the classroom to my graduate assistantship! I work at the public relations GA in the WVU Office of Graduate Education and Life. The assistantship provides me both significant financial aid for my studies and amazing work experience.
I wouldn’t have found this incredible opportunity without the support of the MBSP. It was through a fellow Boyd Scholar that I learned about my first internship which spurred my interest in the communications field. Without her support and encouragement, I may have never fallen in love with this area of study."
