Grady Sports: Sports journalism at UGA's Grady College

Grady Sports: Sports journalism at UGA's Grady College This is the page for the University of Georgia's sports media program at Grady College. We train UGA undergraduates in sports reporting and writing, broadcast and production, social and digital media, and communications and media relations.

On May 11, 2011, Grady College Dean Culpepper Clark announced plans to develop the Center for Sports Journalism and Society, supported by gifts and pledges totaling $1 million from the John Huland Carmical Foundation of Atlanta. The College recruited veteran sports journalist Vicki Michaelis for the Carmical Chair in Sports Journalism and Society. She is director of GradySports. Dr. Welch Suggs is associate director. Classes, student activities and programs in sports journalism began at Grady in the fall of 2011. GradySports soon will offer a certificate program and other educational opportunities.

Mission: GradySports trains aspiring professionals in sports media across platforms and disciplines. We strive to give our students the journalistic foundation, real-world experience and varied skills they will need to succeed in a fast-changing industry. Through teaching, research and special events, GradySports also provides a forum for critical examination of the interplay of sports and media in society.

Taylor Maggiore walks the walk! "We will give others opportunities because we’re all sitting here today because someone took a chance on us,” she said in her UGA commencement speech in December 2019. Not even six months later, she has funded the Taylor Maggiore Scholarship for students in the Grady Sports Media undergraduate certificate program.

In Grady Sports, the core of our work is field assignments--finding and telling stories out in the (wide) world of sports. Today and tomorrow, our newest cohort are working on advance stories at Super Bowl media availabilities with the Rams and the Patriots. Follow us on Twitter at #gradysports and see our students talking to pros like Bill Rhoden, Josina Anderson, and our own Jamie Han, class of '16 and now social media director for the Rams. Massive credit to Prof. D. Orlando Ledbetter for getting the NFL to give us this opportunity!

UGA Orientation

Today is a great day to introduce our Firework 5 and Athens native, Taylor Maggiore! Taylor definitely keeps busy as a Journalism major earning a minor in Communications Studies and certificate in Sports Media. Being from Athens, Taylor has always been around UGA and loves so many of the traditions. Her favorite tradition is the Battle Hymn and said, “During the opening of football games, a lone trumpeter stands in the southwest corner of the stadium and plays the opening to the UGA Battle Hymn. All 92,746 fans in attendance point towards the trumpeter while he or she plays. Complete chills!!!”

Meet the Rising 25 Class of 2018: Ann Drinkard

We're very proud of Grady Sports: Sports journalism at UGA's Grady College 2016 graduate Ann Drinkard, named to Front Office Sports' Rising 25! She offers some great advice in this Q&A, including this: "Now more than ever I understand and appreciate the importance of building and maintaining relationships. The more time you spend in sports, the more you realize that it’s definitely a 'six degrees of separation' industry."

Ann Drinkard works for the SEC as a digital media and communications assistant.

How Kevin Bickner Went From Climbing His School’s Flagpole To Becoming One Of Team USA’s Best Ski Jumpers

Three weeks from today, the 2018 Winter Olympics will open in PyeongChang, South Korea. Two of our Grady Sports: Sports journalism at UGA's Grady College students, Emily Giambalvo and Cat Hendrick, will be there, writing stories about U.S. medalists for Team USA.
Emily and Cat attended the Olympic Media Summit in Park City, Utah, in September, as part of their preparation. The lead-up stories they reported there (including this one) are posting now.

When ski jumper Kevin Bickner was a first-grader in the Chicago suburb of Wauconda, Illinois, his mother, Maureen Bickner, got an urgent call from the school. Her son was waiting to be picked up from the principal’s office.

Grady Sports Media students practice media relations at the NCAA Tennis Championships - Grady College of Journalism

For the "Sports Media Relations" class this Maymester, Grady Sports: Sports journalism at UGA's Grady College students worked with UGA Sports Communications, as UGA hosted the NCAA men's and women's tennis championships. The students did everything from generating social content and feature stories to drying the rain-soaked courts. Said one student: "We actually get immediate, hands-on experience. It's certainly more fun than any other class I could've taken."

Grady Sports: We Have More Fun.

Nine students in the Grady Sports Media program spent Maymester covering all angles of the 2017 NCAA Division I Tennis Championships May 18-29, 2017, at the Dan Magill Tennis Complex. How runners from Africa found home, success at a Georgia HS

This story began as a class assignment for Welch Suggs' "Sports Enterprise and Reporting" class. Grady Sports student Emily Giambalvo did some high-level reporting and writing, and #UGAVJ student Casey Sykes added some great photos. Now they have ESPN bylines. Doing the Grady College of Journalism and Mass Communication, University of Georgia proud!

For Clarkston High School's state-champion cross country runners, all African immigrants and refugees who've settled into American life, the team motto of "We Matter" goes beyond sports.

Iconic Miami Herald sports columnist Edwin Pope dies at 88

So many inspired words written about UGA graduate and giant of sports journalism Edwin Pope since his death last week. None of which could match his own. As sports broadcaster Hank Goldberg says in this Miami Herald obituary: "He was one of a few that made a typewriter sing." We always will consider Pope an honorary and most honorable member of Grady Sports.

Edwin Pope was so influential during his seven decades chronicling South Florida sports, he covered the first 47 Super Bowls, witnessed Muhammad Ali win boxing’s heavyweight title for the first time and suggested the Dolphins hire a young coach named Don Shula.
