UGA Meat Science Technology Center Store

UGA Meat Science Technology Center Store We are a USDA inspected (TA) meat processing facility and retail store open every Friday 10:00 am - 4:30 pm
Lat: 33.936387
Long: -83.368762 The Meat Science and Technology Center (MSTC) located in the Animal and Dairy Science Department at the University of Georgia is a fully functional meat animal processing facility that is federally (USDA) inspected (est. # 7421A) to ensure that all animals are treated with their welfare in mind and to ensure the wholesomeness of the meat products that are produced.
(57)

The main purpose of the MSTC is to facilitate teaching, outreach and research education in the areas of meat animal production, meat science and muscle biology. The MSTC is an invaluable tool to help educate and train students and the public that have an interest in working in a field that feeds millions of people every day. The ongoing work at the MSTC strives to serve the needs of the citizens of Georgia, the United States and the World. The MSTC is managed by Mr. H. Ryan Crowe. Every semester Mr. Crowe employs approximately 6 students that want to get a more in-depth understanding of the meat business. Although the main purpose of the MSTC is to provide a facility for education, outreach, and research, Mr. Crowe is able to sell the meat that is produced because it is inspected for wholesomeness by the USDA. The weekly meat sales also provide an excellent environment for our students to learn about meat market merchandizing, food safety, and public relations. The income from meat sales goes directly back to the department of Animal and Dairy Sciences to facilitate the continued hands on education of our students. Meat sales are open to the public every Friday 10:00-4:30 pm.

We are late getting this posted but the store is open for regular hours. We sold out of bacon last week by 2, but we have more available today that came out of the smoker this week. The crew is working to get all the bacon made and get caught up. Since we are still working to get caught up on the bacon we still do not have any raw belly.

Let’s try this again, will be sliced and ready for Friday!

Let’s try this again, will be sliced and ready for Friday!

03/19/2021

The shop is open for regular hours and we have plenty of pork, just out of bacon again. We will hopefully have some bacon ready again by next week.

03/15/2021

It took about 3 hrs and we sold out of all 380 lb of bacon we had. If you missed last Friday we are working to get more bacon made, but it will probably take a couple of weeks.

We know it has been a long wait, but the bacon came out of the smoker today and will sliced and ready for Friday!

We know it has been a long wait, but the bacon came out of the smoker today and will sliced and ready for Friday!

03/05/2021

The shop is open today from 10-430. We are hoping to get some bacon made and have it available next week.

02/23/2021

We will be open this Friday for regular hours and will have lamb cuts available. There were only 5 lambs and they will go fast. Although the cuts will be out on Friday it may take us until next week to get the ground lamb out. This will be our only lamb offering until the Fall.

02/19/2021

Late post but we are open today with pork, sausages, and beef. We also have our summer sausage and snack sticks back in stock. Still waiting on enough bellies to make bacon, hopefully in a couple more weeks. We are also hoping to get some lamb put out for next Friday.

02/11/2021

The shop will be open tomorrow for regular hours. We will have pork back in stock, but no bacon quite yet. We are also going to try and get some heart shaped double ribeye steaks out for that special Valentines dinner.

02/05/2021

The shop is open today, we are still out of pork and bacon, but will hopefully be able to get some in the case in the next couple of weeks. Today is primarily beef and sausages.

01/29/2021

We are a little late to the game today due to cutting for research, but the store is open for regular hours. Same items as last week-beef and sausages. We are still waiting for pork to come through so we still don’t have any bacon either.

01/21/2021

The shop will be open tomorrow, our inventory is pretty much the same as last week: beef, sausages (no JC smoked sausage). We are still out of pork and summer sausage/snack sticks.

01/15/2021

Today we should have a good selection of Beef available as well as sausages (no jalapeño cheese smoked sausage). We are currently out of pork, bacon, and ready-to-eat (summer sausage and snack sticks). We will hopefully be restocking the other items in the coming weeks.

01/14/2021

Just a reminder the shop will be open tomorrow for normal hours.

01/06/2021

We hope everyone had a Merry Christmas and Happy New Year. We will NOT be open this Friday (Jan 8th) but are planning our first day back to be Friday Jan 15th.

12/10/2020

Just a reminder we are now closed until the new semester starts in 2021. Good luck to all of our students as they work on completing their finals this week and we hope you have a great break.

12/03/2020

All,
We will be open tomorrow (Friday Dec 4th) for regular hours (10-430). THIS WILL BE OUR LAST DAY OF SALES FOR THE CALENDAR YEAR due to staff shortages (UGA students have gone home for the semester) and so we can prepare for the spring semester. We know this is earlier than normal, and we truly appreciate your business and support of our program. If you are needing something while we are closed and haven't heard Athens has a new butcher shop on the east side - Corner's Edge Butcher Shoppe of Athens and of course Stripling's General Store on the west side. We hope to see you tomorrow and in 2021. Below is a list of what we have (if not on the list we are out of stock):
Sausages-
Beer brats, Chorizo, andouille, sweet Italian, zesty Italian, mild breakfast, hot breakfast, smoked sausage, J/C smoked sausage

Summer sausage

Pork-
Pork shanks
Pork loin roast

Beef-
Ribeye steak
Strip steak
Sirloin steak
Briskets
Hanger steak (2 packs left)
Underblade roast

Ground beef

11/17/2020

We will be open this Friday and should have all the items from last week including ground beef (no patties until after Thanksgiving). Right now we are NOT planning any sales days next week due to the Universities TG break. We hope everyone has a good and safe Thanksgiving!

11/12/2020

We waited a while to post to make sure we would have it ready, but BEEF will finally be back in tomorrow. We will have Ribeye steak, strip steak, sirloin steak, picanha (sirloin cap), London broil, underblade roast, shoulder roast, flat iron steak, chuck tender, stew, chuck eye steak, and brisket. We hoping to have ground beef next week, but patties will likely be the week after Thanksgiving.

10/07/2020

Just for proof the lamb is cut and ready for Friday. It is first come, first serve. There were only 3 lambs that come through so it won't last long. Available this Friday at 10 am.

Edit: Just found out we will have additional lamb coming through for next week and possibly the week after, so if you don't get any this week there will be a few more opportunities!

10/01/2020

The shop will be open for regular hours tomorrow. We still only have pork and sausages, but there should be plenty to pick from to kick off the first home game of the year! We will have lamb next week (Oct 9), but we only had 3 come in, so it definitely won’t last long.

09/16/2020

We will be open for regular hours this week. We are still primarily pork/sausage items. Tentatively we are looking at having some lamb available around Oct 9 and beef will hopefully be back in stock towards the end of October/early November.

09/11/2020

The shop will be open for regular hours today. We pretty much still just have pork, but do have some beef summer sausage and snack sticks. Please remember to wear your mask (UGA requirement). Right now we are only taking credit or debit cards (except Discover). Have a great weekend!

09/04/2020

Just a reminder we will be open today for in store shopping. We are still out of beef, but have plenty of pork. Right now we are only taking credit cards or debit cards (except Discover). We hope everyone has a great and safe holiday weekend!

08/21/2020

We know it has been a crazy summer and a very different start to the fall semester, but we want to welcome our students back to campus and class. We are open today for in store shopping. We have wipes available and are regularly wiping down surfaces. Please remember to wear your mask, as required by UGA, while in the building and try to maintain proper distancing. Right now we are only taking credit card/debit card (except Discover).

We are still out of beef, but have plenty of pork options.

08/03/2020

EDIT NOTICE: Since we are opening as normal this Friday we are No Longer taking email or preorders. We are only doing business as normal. We understand the interest in doing preorder, but with the limited time and labor we can only do in store. Thank you.

Hello everyone. We will reopen for normal retail hours and operations this Friday, August 7th. The store will be open from 10:00am-4:30pm, and you will be able to come inside to purchase what you like. We will continue to accept credit and debit card only at this time (no Discover).

MASKS ARE REQUIRED. This is mandated by UGA. At times, if needed we may need to limit the number of people in the shop at one time.

We will be wiping down surfaces and door handles throughout the hours of retail.

Inventory- we have plenty of pork cuts, sausages, and smoked items. Currently we are out of beef, including ground beef and hamburger patties.

For a returning FYI, we are attaching a list of what is available. We have plenty of what is on the list. However--since we are starting this back up as normal operations, in the future we will not be providing weekly inventory levels as we did before. You can always email Ryan Crowe ([email protected]) to inquire if something is available.

Thank you for your support and please bear with us as we work through a more "normal" re-opening.

07/16/2020

Thank you to all our customers, old and new, that have supported our program over the past several months. This is just a reminder that we are currently closed for some down time and to try and restock. We are hoping to be back open sometime in August, hopefully for regular shopping on Fridays. We will post more information as time gets closer. We hope you have a good rest of summer.

***FOR THE WEEK BEFORE JULY 4 (06/29/20 - 07/02/20) -- For this week, orders will START ON THURSDAY (JUNE 25) AT 3:00PM, AND END ON WEDNESDAY (JULY 1) AT 3:00PM. THE DAY FOR PICK UP WILL BE THURSDAY (JULY 2), FROM 9AM-3PM. WE WILL BE CLOSED ON FRIDAY, JULY 3***

Here is the list and information for the week of 06/29/20 - pickup on 7/02/20 (THURSDAY). Our inventory is getting short as we have had to break for some other work, but will hopefully be restocking with some more items in the coming weeks. Please pay special attention to the timing of your order. Orders are filled as they come in, therefore, if you wait until later in the week there is a possibility of us being out of some of you items. Due to the volume of orders we cannot send conformations or let you know if we ran out of items.
PLEASE TAKE A MOMENT TO READ THIS ENTIRE POST BEFORE PLACING AN ORDER . We know the pricelist picture is grainy. We are trying to provide more information about the packages.
PLEASE TAKE A MOMENT TO READ THIS ENTIRE POST BEFORE PLACING AN ORDER.
The method for placing an order is detailed below, but please continue to read all of this post.
Orders will be filled in the order that they are received, which means items will sell out as the orders come in. The longer you wait to order, the less product we have. The attached inventory/price sheet is what we have when this post posts to Facebook, so some items could be sold out by the time you place your order. It would be nice if the orders were a minimum of $30. If something is not listed on the inventory/price sheet, that means we do not have it.
During this time, only credit/debit cards will be accepted (no cash). We accept Visa, MC, and Amex, but NOT Discover. You pay for your order at the time of pick up. Please do not send credit/debit card numbers via email.
Your order should be placed by 3pm on Thursday, to be picked up the next day (Friday), from 9am-3pm. Please specify the time that you would like to pick it up between 9am-3pm on Fridays. Any orders submitted after 3pm on Thursdays will not be available until the next Friday (a week later).
QUESTIONS-- If you have a question about something, please put “QUESTION” in the subject line and in ALL CAPS, then write your question in the body of the email. Do not include your order when asking a question.
ORDERS— Are being conducted via email to [email protected]
When emailing an order, please put “ORDER” (literally the word ORDER) in the subject line and in ALL CAPS, FOLLOWED BY THE TIME you intend to pick up that Friday. Then put your order in the body of the email. Knowing the TIME you would like to pick up your order on Friday, definitely helps coordinating. On your order, please list the type of product you want and indicate “x1”, for one package, “x2” for two packages, etc. If you want the package(s) to be smaller or bigger, please use “light” or “heavy”. We will do our best to accommodate with what’s available.
Here is an example of an order that you want to pick up at 1pm. You decide that you want: 3 big packs of bacon, 2 packs of regular (1”) bone in chops, and 1 chub of mild breakfast sausage. This is how your order should read:
--Subject line:
ORDER, 1pm
--Body of the email:
Bacon x 3 (heavy)
Bone in chop 1” x 2
Mild breakfast sausage x 1
If you have an email address that is not your given name, please include your name in the body of the email as well so we don’t call you “meatslinger749508”.
CONFIRMATION/TOTAL PRICE-- We will not be emailing a confirmation that your order is received/ready for pick up. I am checking my junk mail daily to ensure no orders end up there. We will not be emailing to let you know what your total is. There are simply too many orders (which is a great thing), and not enough time.
All doors of the meat lab are locked, and will remain locked. When picking up your order, please come to the “front” doors or the meat lab (the glass doors right in the retail area). I will meet you at those doors, get your name and card, then run the card and bring the meat to you. You will not be allowed in the building.
DIRECTIONS:
1. 10 loop to College Station (exit 7).
2. Head towards the university (inside the loop).
3. The first light you come to will be River Rd. (If the first light you come to is Riverbend Rd., you are going the wrong way).
4. Take a right onto River Rd, and travel about 280 yards. In this 280 yards, you will pass a university sign "E.L. Rhodes Center for Animal and Dairy Science", then a "Meat Science Technology Center” sign.
Behind the MSTC sign, towards the building, there are the “front doors”. They are glass doors, and about 150 feet from the MSTC sign. These are the doors that you will pick up at.
PARKING:
Follow the directions above, and use your best judgement. We (MSTC) are not responsible for any parking tickets you may receive.
The closest lot to the “front door” of the Meat Science Technology Center is the Animal & Dairy Science lot (first parking lot to the right once you turn onto River Rd), or the open lot of the Ramsey Center (first parking lot to the left once you turn onto River Rd).
All orders are to be emailed to [email protected] This Facebook account will not be continuously monitored during this time, and therefore questions posted here (or sent through messenger) will likely not be answered in a timely fashion. All QUESTIONS regarding orders and inventory levels should be directed to [email protected] (please see previous QUESTIONS section). We hope everyone is staying safe and we hope this ends soon so we can resume normal operations. We will let you know via FB when we are allowed to resume as normal. Thank you for understanding! Stay safe.
