Each week, students transform unused food from dining halls, grocery stores, restaurants, and farmers markets into meals that are delivered to local agencies serving those in need in Athens, GA. By taking the initiative to run a community kitchen, students develop entrepreneurial and leadership skills, along with a commitment to serve their community. The Campus Kitchen at UGA goes beyond meals by using food as a tool to participate in nutrition education, combat senior isolation, and create dialogues on food policy in the UGA community. The Campus Kitchen at UGA became the 33rd official branch of the Campus Kitchens Project network in the fall of 2012. The Campus Kitchen at UGA focuses on alleviating senior hunger in Athens, GA. Everything starts with our Food Collection shifts! Without our amazing donors who donate an abundance of fresh produce, meat, bread, and other food items, and our amazing shift leaders that pick these items up, we would not be able to run a lot of the operations that we do ☺️ This picture was taken at our Food Collection shift at the Botanical Garden

INTERN WEDNESDAYS!! Meet our CK President Kelton McConnell! He will be assisting our program coordinator, AmeriCorps VISTA, fellow interns, and shift leaders to ensure our operations run smoothly and continue to improve. This can include spearheading initiatives, grant writing, representing CK at events, and filling in for shifts. He is currently working on converting a reclaimed shipping container into a community-shared, partially solar-powered, climate-controlled fresh produce storage unit to reduce food waste in the community and increase access to nutritious foods for food-insecure populations at UGA and in Athens-Clarke County (check our story weekly for updates on this!). In his spare time, Kelton loves hiking, reading, listening to music, and spending time with friends (pre-pandemic). He loves a good adventure, and many of my favorite days have been outdoors with good company, soaking up the sun and being merry. How fun!!

Over the past few weeks, Campus Kitchen has witnessed an amazing response by our UGA community and beyond to the COVID-19 crisis. Hey, Hunger Fighters! Though our communities have been disrupted to their core, Campus Kitchen is still out here delivering vital meals and groceries to the community. Like everything else, our operations have changed SO much, especially our deliveries. Volunteers and interns maintain the safe 6-foot distance from one another, wear masks and gloves, and ride from delivery to delivery with one person driving and one sitting in the back with the windows open to allow lots of airflow. We place the meals at our client’s doors and stay back at least 6-feet to ensure their safety and our own. Ultimately, it’s about continuing to make all of our deliveries while keeping everyone safe. We hope everyone is adjusting and staying healthy!

Hey Hunger Fighters!
Food insecurity is a problem that doesn't disappear when other emergencies come around. That's why we're SO thankful for all of our community partners and fellow UGA Public Service and Outreach units who have stepped up to help us continue to provide weekly food and prepared meals to all of our clients.

Produce from UGArden and the State Botanical Garden of Georgia at UGA is prepared into finished meals at the University of Georgia Center for Continuing Education & Hotel for and safely delivered to our clients’ doorsteps by amazing volunteers from UGA Service-Learning, AmeriCorps VISTAs, and many others. Thank you to everyone for your continued selfless service to the community.

Our Story

The Campus Kitchen at UGA is the student-powered hunger relief program of the UGA Office of Service-Learning. We exist to spotlight sustainable solutions to hunger and food waste and to showcase a mutually beneficial university-community partnership.

Campus Kitchen runs a weekly food recovery and redistribution enterprise led by UGA student volunteers. Student leaders and volunteers together transform unused food from grocery stores and farms into meals and groceries that are delivered to older adults and human service agencies in Athens, Georgia.

The Campus Kitchen at UGA goes beyond providing just meal service by using food as a tool to combat senior isolation, foster community connections, and engage UGA students and faculty in developing sustainable solutions to food waste and hunger.
