UGA Foundation Fellows University of Georgia's premier undergraduate academic scholarships -- the Foundation Fellowship and Ramsey Scholarship
(5)

The heart of the Foundation Fellowship beats in the Honors Program’s Moore College on The University of Georgia’s North Campus. But that same heartbeat often finds itself in out-of-the-ordinary locales, including England, South Korea, and Tanzania, to name but a few.

Mission: Beyond the obvious scholastic benefits, the Foundation Fellows Program also emphasizes fellowship, sharing of resources and ideas, and lifelong friendships. Peer mentoring (Big and Little Fellows), dinner seminars, cultural events, annual retreats, the Fellows Library in Moore College, and group travel promote a sense of community among the Fellows.

Today, I’m proud to announce the launch of the AllClear app. A platform I have been working on alongside other amazing founding volunteers. We believe this is the most comprehensive platform for finding test locations across the US.

AllClear is an app that shows people their most relevant and closest #COVID19 test location, helping communities get back on track in the fastest and safest way possible.

Visit https://allclear.app/ to use AllClear and share with your friends and families. We welcome feedback as we continue to make AllClear even better.

We were also covered in the Axios newsletter by Ina Fried. Check it out: https://lnkd.in/dpDHJ4J

Congratulations to Avni Ahuja and Emma Goldsmith, this year’s recipients of the Lisa Ann Coole Award.

To be designated as a Lisa Coole Award recipient—to be recognized as someone who emulates Lisa’s life—is simply the greatest achievement in the Fellowship.

Lisa Coole was a varsity swimmer and an NCAA Woman of the Year. She graduated from UGA with distinction but then tragically died in an auto accident when she was in her first year of veterinary school. She was a person of grace and dignity—an impressive intellect combined with a matchless drive for success and a boundless heart.

Avni and Emma share those qualities, as noted in these comments from their peers who nominated them:

“I have never witnessed Avni be anything but kind, generous, and understanding. She welcomes everyone with open arms, even if she has just met them. She is usually the first to plan group activities and bonding events; she does this not to receive praise or gratitude, but rather to strengthen the sense of community we all value so much.”

“Emma has been a constant source of joy and light for our FFR class since the first day we stepped foot on this campus. Talking to Emma is like getting a warm hug! She has a calm, relaxing presence and treats everyone with consideration and respect. I've really never met a more genuine person and am lucky to call her my friend. I really couldn't think of anyone else more deserving.”

Professor moves closer to possible COVID-19 vaccine

A team of researchers at the University of Georgia College of Veterinary Medicine has developed a COVID-19 vaccine candidate that has proven successful in promoting an immune response in early test models.

The team is led by Biao He, the Fred C. Davison Distinguished University Chair in Veterinary Medicine at UGA, and Drs. Stanley Perlman and Paul McCray of the University of Iowa department of microbiology and immunology. Together, they developed a promising vaccine for MERS-CoV, the coronavirus that causes Middle East Respiratory Syndrome, and quickly pivoted their research to focus on SARS-CoV-2. ...

Annual CURO Symposium to be held online April 21-24

From posters to oral presentations, University of Georgia undergraduates are sharing their research digitally this spring during the 2020 Virtual CURO Symposium, to be held on April 21-24 through UGA’s eLearning Commons.

Hosted by the Center for Undergraduate Research Opportunities, the symposium gives UGA students the opportunity to present their projects to faculty, graduate students and peers. It is open to all undergraduates pursuing faculty-mentored research in any discipline.

“We are excited that the virtual symposium will have the same kind of range of presentations that we have seen in past years,” said David S. Williams, associate provost and director of the Honors Program and CURO. “The digital format will also give attendees the opportunity to take in more presentations than they ever could have before.”

After the symposium was moved to an online, asynchronous format, students submitted videos and digital posters instead of preparing to share their research at a set time. When the symposium opens online on April 21 at 2 p.m., attendees will have the opportunity to view and comment on all of the presentations.

“During the virtual symposium, we encourage all participants, especially faculty mentors, to give feedback to the student presenters via the discussion boards,” said Maria Navarro, associate director of Honors and CURO.

Access to the symposium will close on April 24 at 5 p.m.

Students present their research projects to faculty, graduate students and peers.

UGA students involved in effort to share coronavirus help resources

“The students and some recent graduates have created a nationwide map with food banks, medical facilities, COVID-19 testing sites and other resources. As of last week, they identified more than 11,000 sites. They’re continuing to add locations to the U.S. map and are working on similar maps for other parts of the world, starting with Africa, Europe and Latin America.

“ ‘I think a lot of students want to figure out ways to loop people in their communities and this gives us a way to help,’ said Christopher Rosselot, 19, a first-year UGA student involved in the effort.

“Rosselot is part of GroundBreakers, a group created in 2017 to address issues in communities worldwide, such as food insecurity in Kenya or the opioid crisis in Ohio. The organization was co-founded by Rara Reines, 22, an Athens native who graduated from UGA in August. About a dozen UGA students are part of the core team. Several University of Texas at Austin students have been closely involved to assist in mapping. GroundBreakers said it is operating in 51 countries.”

For any FF alumni in the Atlanta area that are looking for a way to meet some new people, professionally network, and give back at the same time, check out this upcoming event at CHRIS 180! We are actively recruiting for our leadership group - ELN (Emerging Leaders Network). CHRIS 180 is a non-profit organization and doing some amazing work. Our CEO was even named one of the Atlanta Business Chronicle’s Most Admired CEOs of 2019. It’s a fun group, not too much commitment, and for a great cause. If anyone has any questions about it, you are welcome to reach out to me directly at [email protected]. Thanks! If you can’t make this event, there is another one scheduled for Tuesday, September 24th at Taverna Buckhead from 5 to 7 PM. https://www.facebook.com/events/2470272523065094/?ti=icl
Hey current Fellows. I would like some help with a personal project. If one of you could go to the next University of Georgia Press book sale, I am trying to find copies of Lancelot or the knight of the cart, by Chretien de Troyes translated by Ruth Cline or Erec and Enide by the same. I will gladly recompense you for the service. Thanks
I think I saw that someone posted about needing a sublet in NYC but I can't find it anymore...does anyone know who it was? We just moved in to the Upper West Side and are happy to talk about staying in our living room!
