University of Georgia School of Social Work

The International Social Work Student Association hosted “World Social Work at UGA” on Monday night in the school's ground floor lounge (http://bit.ly/1pIUjrD). Dr. Adel Amer, UGA department of religion, spoke about religious tolerance and Joshua Cranston, a faith activist, spoke about the importance of building interfaith communities. Students also presented posters about challenges facing different populations around the world.
.
“The overall message was to avoid overgeneralizing others, look for commonalities rather than differences, and be comfortable interacting with people who have different viewpoints from you,” said Christen Carroll, one of the event organizers. “As social workers one of our core values is to respect the dignity and worth of the person. We can do that in every interaction with clients and the community by being open and willing to learn from others.”
.
Father Anthony Salzman of St. Philothea Greek Orthodox Church demonstrated painting Orthodox Christian icons, and students enjoyed dance demonstrations and made pinwheels for the Students Rebuild Healing Classrooms Challenge. For each pinwheel made, the Bezos Family Foundation donated $2.50 to help refugee children in Lebanon and Iraq. The students made approximately 425 pinwheels, raising more than $1,000 for the program. To see more photos of the event, visit http://bit.ly/1pIUjrD.
