"I was born into a relatively impoverished neighborhood on the south side of Chicago. Growing up there taught me about who I am and helped me recognize my love for the human race. When I moved from the inner city to an affluent white neighborhood, I learned about health care, educational and income disparities. And that drew me deeper into realizing that I wanted to be a physician to combat these disparities.

"Around the same time, I fell in love with chemistry and biology. I still remember so vividly dissecting a fetal pig and my teacher pointing at the kidneys and asking me to identify the organ and what it does. And I got to thinking how this tiny bean-shaped organ plays a vital role in our existence. That was just really amazing to my growing brain, and it pushed me further into grasping that I needed to be a physician to take care of human beings in their most vulnerable state.

"My future lies in pediatrics, which came about when I realized that the experiences we have as kids dictate who we become as adults. So it’s essential to cultivate the minds of kids, their curiosity, take care of their mental health and make sure they have a supportive environment. One of my long-term dreams is to create a Montessori School for Black and brown kids in Chicago. The biggest thing for me is discerning that physicians are teachers. And as a teacher, I plan to be a bridge between the medical community to the science community to the everyday general people.

"My 'why?' is that I do this is for people because people deserve better. Black people specifically deserve to see African Americans in these physician roles. I didn’t know any Black physicians when I applied to medical school, but I want my little cousins to have that opportunity. I want people to know that, for me, every day is Black History Month. Every day I am learning our history, what my ancestors before me have done and how they have changed this nation’s face and what I can do better for Black communities here and around the world."

#HumansofOUHCOM: Rebecca Sell Schmehl, OMS-I

"After the birth of my second child (I have three), I felt the need to do something to reclaim some time for myself because I worked a lot. I had my family life and being a mom; then, I worked in photojournalism, making projects, films and freelancing. I was the graduate director of OHIO’s visual communications department, and I was teaching.

So I decided to sign up for a chemistry class taught across the hall from my office. I hadn’t taken science since high school, and I didn’t know what to expect, but I just loved it. Consequently, I took another class, and then another class, and ultimately, I realized how much I actually loved science. My love for science and my passion for working with people started to come together in those classrooms and got me thinking that maybe this is something I can actually do, pull those two things together and get involved in medicine.

So other than being a mom, photojournalist and teacher, I was also a pre-med student. I felt like I was four people in one, and there were many points where I was like, 'This is ridiculous. What am I doing?' As the pre-med classes came to an end, I had to make a decision. And I am blessed to have a husband who really says 'go do' to everything I’ve ever done and wanted to do. And that is when it turned into a full-fledged path.

Working as a graduate director was a huge part of my inspiration to do med school. I spent years talking to people about following their dreams and watching them make career choices, and through all those conversations, you start to ponder, 'I wonder what I want my life to look like?' Don’t get me wrong; I loved my profession. I was very happy in it, but witnessing so many students follow their dreams, I started paying attention to what stories I had been truly interested in. And the stories that drew me tended to have a health care bent to them. Talking with people – helping them figure out how to achieve their goals – has a lot to do with what I hope to do in health care: help people achieve their best health in life. #CareLeadsHere School of Visual Communication, Ohio University - Athens
