Welcome Clinical Assistant Professor Rebecca Wells, new coordinator for the MSW/MPH Program! Dr. Wells, who hails from Macon, Georgia, holds MSW and MPH degrees from the University of South Carolina and a doctorate in public health, health services and policy research from Georgia State University. She most recently worked at the GSU Center for Leadership and Disability, providing research and project support to community-based projects at the local and state level. She also was a major contributor to the Georgia Leadership, Education and Neurodevelopmental Disabilities (LEND) evaluation team. Her research interests include the medical home model for children with special healthcare needs and the use of e-portfolios to enhance social work education.

“I really love teaching and the opportunity to make an impact to help students to see things in new ways and potentially change their career trajectories,” said Dr. Wells, who also holds GSU’s Certificate of Excellence in Teaching and Learning. This fall she will be teaching the graduate course “Social Work in Healthcare Settings” (SOWK 7190). She holds a 50/50 appointment with the College of Public Health.

Alejandra Calva, top photo, a first-year student in the dual Masters in Social Work and Masters in Public Health program, listens as School of Social Work Assistant Professor Rebecca Matthew and Dr. José Cordero, Gordhan L. and Virginia B. "Jinx" Patel Distinguished Professor in Public Health, discuss research she conducted on a Latino community health worker program known as “Lazos Hispanos.” The trio were attending “Celebrating Graduate Research to Improve Human Health,” sponsored by the Graduate School and held March 22 on the Health Sciences Campus. The event was attended by UGA President Jere Morehead and faculty and students from across campus. Ms. Calva’s research centers around a new program, Lazos Hispanos, or Hispanic Links, which trains Latina women who are trusted and respected within their communities to become promotoras – community health workers – and serve as bridges to health service providers. Since the start of the program, Calva reports that promotora involvement has helped encourage 12 local service providers to sign formal Memoranda of Understanding (MOU) to address systemic barriers to health service access in the Athens Clarke County area. Her research was propelled forward by a research award from President Morehead’s Interdisciplinary Seed Grant Program, as well funding for her graduate assistantship at the School of Social Work. Dr. Matthew is the principal investigator for Lazos Hispanos, which includes researchers from several disciplines.
.
"For me as a student, one of the cool aspects of this project is that I can work with faculty from public health and social work and other disciplines outside of the classroom," said Calva. Also pictured: Dr. Matthew talking about Lazos Hispanos and President Morehead welcoming attendees.

While a graduate student at UGA, Amber Flanigan (MSW/MPH ’15) learned that local hospitals had reported an increasing prevalence of diabetes and obesity in the region, as well as emergency room visits for hypertension. She conducted a survey with clients and staff in her field placement agency to see how much interest there was in integrating mind-body wellness support into their behavioral health services. Practices such as yoga, tai chi, mindfulness meditation and nutrition education have been shown to help address chronic disease and mental health concerns. She found that the majority of respondents (84.8 percent) agreed or strongly agreed that such services are important to mental and physical health, but that cost was a potential barrier. The study was published in the journal Health & Social Work. Assistant Professor Trina Salm Ward served as faculty advisor on this project.
