Cancer patients are considered high risk for COVID-19 because their immune systems are weakened by cancer and it’s treatments. There were about 1.7 million new cases of cancer in 2019, meaning many people are currently in treatment. To help lower the risk of patients and their caregivers getting COVID-19, please stay home and practice self isolation.

We want to say a huge thank you to all of the professionals and people on the frontlines during the COVID-19 pandemic. Healthcare workers are providing care for people suffering the virus, while also balancing the needs everyday patients. Some cancer patients are having to postpone elective surgery, or delay preventive care that is meant to keep cancer from returning. We’re so thankful for the American Cancer Society continuing to offer support and help through the 24/7 hotline. To help keep life-saving services like the cancer hotline, donate through the link below.

Our second survivor is Sara’s Great Aunt Bea. “She fought breast cancer back in the 1980s. Her family was able to get together a team of doctors that ultimately saved her life. They advocated for her to not only get a mammogram, but have needle biopsy and a surgical biopsy that diagnosed her when the mammogram showed she was in the clear. Radiation treatments weren’t as precise as they are now, so she had unexpected effects later in life due to the radiation. It caused the membrane around her heart to be inflamed, leading to heart surgery for removal. Thankfully she is doing well now and has survived her battle with breast cancer.” Although many of our loved ones are still fighting cancer, we're thankful for these moments of hope, new technology and research that makes remission possible, and the strong survivors who inspire us daily!
