Some of us geeky folk love science. And one area of science that is deeply interwoven with Yoga is Polyvagal Theory ... often referred to as *the science of connection.* đŸ©”

At the core of PVT is the understanding that our nervous systems are constantly receiving cues from the world around us — from environments, experiences, and especially from other people.

Those cues can move us into survival mode
 or toward ease and relaxation.
Toward vigilant watching and self-protection
or toward openness, presence, trust, and connection.

Some teachers of polyvagal theory describe this nervous system response beautifully as the difference between the *drive to survive* and the *urge to merge.* (I think it was Deb Dana, but don't quote me on that.)

As human beings, we are wired for (and long for!) safe connection...

A warm smile.
A welcoming voice.
Shared laughter at a dinner table.
Feeling included.
Being cared for.
Moments of beauty and stillness.
Simply knowing someone is thinking about your needs and you.

When our nervous systems feel more balanced and supported, an entirely different world opens up. We can tune out some of the constant noise and distraction around us and tune back into the present moment. Into ourselves. Into joy. Into meaningful connection with others.

That is part of what we intentionally create through FLOW Yoga Retreats. But don't let the name fool you.... Yoga is not what the retreat is all about. Yoga is just one of many threads that weave together the experience. This retreat is really all about YOU.

Journey with Heart isn’t just about seeing Spain. It’s about experiencing it slowly, meaningfully, and together.

Imagine yourself....

Wandering through Madrid’s historic streets and lush Retiro Park. Sharing incredible meals, a flamenco dinner show, and conversations that linger long after the plates are cleared. Strolling through the ancient streets of Toledo, Segovia, Barcelona. Enjoying quiet coastal mornings and unhurried, intentional days in Costa Brava. Luxuriating in a boutique palace and relishing a picturesque Spanish farmhouse by the sea. Moving, resting, breathing, laughing, practicing Yoga, sitting quietly by the sea, and allowing yourself to be deeply cared for all along the way. (And we mean ALL along....from landing to departure - we've got you!)

Every last detail — from transportation and accommodations to meals and experiences — has been thoughtfully held so you can soften into the experience and fully arrive from the moment your flight lands.

Now more than ever, we all need spaces where we can reconnect with what makes us human: Community, presence, beauty, peace, belonging.

And mostly, one another. đŸ’«

đŸ©” A love letter from Tra.... đŸ©”

There’s a reason safety matters so much to me.

I’m a q***r woman in my late 50s.
I came of age in a time where being openly gay could cost you belonging, opportunities, relationships, safety
 sometimes everything. (IYKYK)

So like many GenX q***r kids, I learned early how to read a room.
How to assess risk.
How to make myself smaller when needed.
How to become hyper-aware of whether people around me were "for me" or "against me".
How to hide in a closet.
How to put on a mask and be someone I am not.

Add to that I was a latchkey kid with divorced parents by age 8. Let’s just say at a young age my nervous system earned a black belt in vigilance. 😅

Over time, though, that hyper-awareness transformed into something else:
Loving Care.

It made me deeply committed to creating spaces where people are warmly welcomed. It taught me how to navigate relationships in a way that people can soften instead of brace themselves.

That’s true in my Yoga classes.
It’s true in friendships.
It's almost always true with my family. 😏
And it’s absolutely true in the retreats Melissa and I curate through FLOW Yoga Retreats.

We intentionally choose destinations, partners, and experiences where LGBTQIA+ folks — and all marginalized people — will feel welcomed, respected, and safe.

Because everyone deserves the experience of exhaling.
Of not having to scan the room.
Of not wondering if they belong.

And in a moment that feels almost too on-the-nose today, as I compose this love letter I get a text from my CIS-gender, straight daughter who was accidentally locked in a closet at work. 😂
The irony is not lost on me.

Thankfully, her closet experience lasted about 10 minutes.
Mine lasted for over a decade.

This is precisely why I care so much about making sure no one has to hide who they are on our retreats. And Melissa is with me. With us.

Come as you are.
We mean that here. đŸ©”

Before almost every retreat, we hear similar versions of the same concerns:

“What if I don’t know anyone?”
“What if I’m not experienced enough at Yoga?”
“What if international travel feels overwhelming right now?”
“What if I spend the money and it doesn’t feel worth it?”
“What if everyone else already belongs?”

And honestly?
Those feelings are natural; they are .... so HUMAN. ❀

That’s exactly why we created FLOW Yoga Retreats the way we did. Our intention is for you to feel welcomed, supported, cared for, and completely free to come exactly as you are - beginning to end.

From the moment your flight lands, you can exhale. We thoughtfully curate every last detail:

✅Ground transportation
✅Accommodations
✅Activities and excursions
✅Meals and snacks
✅Yoga (moving, breathing, restoring, relaxing)
✅Quiet time and rest
✅Community experiences
✅Meaningful moments of connection

We tend to all the little details for you so you can put down the stress of planning or performing.

You do not need to be an “advanced yogi.” (Heck, we have lots of first-timers!)
You do not need to travel with a partner or friend.
You do not need to have everything figured out before you come.

All you have to do is simply land, exhale, and BE....

The nervous systems settles. Joy returns. And you breathe deep once again. Ahhhhhh.....

Over the past 8 years, something beautiful has unfolded with FLOW Yoga Retreats and our community.

People arrive hoping for a meaningful travel experience
and leave with lifelong friendships, unforgettable memories, deeper connection to themselves, and a sense of belonging they didn’t know they were missing.

In fact, 98% of our retreat guests continue returning journey after journey — and we don’t take that lightly.

Because for us, this has never been just about doing Yoga in far away places. It’s about creating experiences that feel intentional, supportive, joyful, restorative, and deeply human...

Shared meals.
Meaningful conversations.
Beautiful places.
Moments of stillness and laughter.
The feeling of being fully cared for so you can soften, breathe, and simply be present.

Again and again, our guests tell us the same thing:
They arrived as strangers and left as family.

These reflections from past retreats remind us why we do this work and why this community means so much to us. ✹

Maybe your next chapter — and the next root in your family tree — is grounded and waiting for you here.
