As an Emory scholar alumnus and dean of the University of Tennessee, Knoxville law school, Lonnie T. Brown, Jr. was determined to continue the legacy of life-changing opportunities and public service in higher education. Now, thanks to a recent gift to the college, Dean Brown is creating a fellowship program modeled after the Woodruff Scholarship that deeply impacted his own life. Like Emory scholars, fellows at the newly named Frank Winston College of Law will have the support of a full scholarship and supplemental grant and programming opportunities.

We are so fortunate to know Dean Brown's leadership firsthand. Pictured is Dean Brown delivering a keynote address at our annual Scholars Retreat in January, where he shared compelling reflections on his journey in academia. As one scholar put it, "[he] embodied resilience as well as personal vigor."

This year, we started with an art tour on the beltline, explored the National Center for Civil and Human Rights, and finished off the day at Centennial Park. 🤩🎡 Welcome home, class of 2028!

After a truly impressive season, the Rex Copeland Award winners will continue their respective pre-med and pre-law journeys at the University of St Andrews and McKinsey & Co. 🎉

A Nursing major with a minor in Korean, rising senior and MLK Scholar BréAnna Smith is determined to explore her passion for community service and culturally competent care. Last summer, she studied abroad in Seoul, South Korea. And this summer? BréAnna is a Neurology ICU nursing extern at MedStar Georgetown University Hospital in Washington, D.C. ✨🥼

We're thrilled to launch our Emory Scholars Program page by featuring two scholar alumni who were recognized at the Emory Alumni Awards annual celebration this past spring!🎉

Jonathan Butler 96C was recognized with the J. Pollard Turman Alumni Service Award for his transformative dedication to addressing equity and inclusion challenges. A native Atlantan and MLK Scholar, Butler is an attorney and the SVP for Community Development at PartnerTulsa. He unceasingly leverages his community engagement expertise as an Emory alumnus, having served on the Emory Alumni Board, Caucus of Emory Black Alumni, and the Emory Transforming Community Project, among several other committees. Currently, he is the leader and a founding member of the Black Emory Impact Circle.

Danielle Sered 00C received the Community Impact Award in recognition of her visionary, solution-oriented work addressing violence and mass incarceration. An Emory Scholar, McMullan Award recipient, and Rhodes Scholar, Sered is the founder and director of Common Justice, a nonprofit in New York City that operates groundbreaking alternative-to-incarceration and victim-service programs. In addition, she is an award-winning author and serves on numerous advisory boards. Her work has affected the lives of thousands of people who have caused and survived violence, especially those most affected by the racial and economic inequities that undergird the US policing and carceral systems.
