#TBT from Georgia Tech Archives: This month the Georgia Tech Archives will take a look at how the Georgia Tech community responds to crisis. Records in the archives not only preserve the celebratory, but also the somber, events of human experiences. Keeping these records for future analysis allows us to understand complex, traumatic and difficult circumstances in context.

The Spanish Flu Pandemic of 1918 resulted in an estimated 50 million deaths worldwide -- 675,000 of those in the US. The pandemic showed up earliest among military personnel. At Georgia Tech, most of the young men enrolled in the school were also enlisted with a military unit and training to fight in World War 1. Absent anti-viral vaccines and antibiotics to treat secondary bacterial infections resulting from the flu, common prescriptions included isolation and quarantine practices.

The top image shows the "Isolation House" located next to the infirmary on campus circa 1900. The infirmary and isolation house served the campus until 1910 when the Joseph Brown Whitehead Memorial Hospital, pictured below, opened next to the administrative buildings on Cherry Street.

Tech Rewind Tuesday (brought to you by retroTECH): “SEEEEEEEGAAAAAAA!” This familiar startup sound came before the opening intros of the Sonic the Hedgehog series on the Sega Genesis console.

Originally named the Sega Mega Drive, it was released in North America on Aug. 14, 1989. It was the first home console to introduce a 16-bit graphics to the public.

Aggressive youth marketing and popular video game series like Sonic the Hedgehog and Mortal Kombat led Sega Genesis to dominate the video game market and become one of the most popular video game systems of the 1990s.

Stop by the retroTECH Lab inside the Data Viz Lab on the 3rd floor of Crosland Tower to check out the Sega Genesis. Visit our website, https://www.library.gatech.edu/retrotech for lab hours!
