GENERAL STATEMENT OF DUTIES: This is a pre-posting for the position of Police Officer Recruit. The official posting is currently scheduled for June 17, 2013. Please see our web site at that time for further instructions on applying. The Police Officer Recruit will undergo a structured progressive basic police training program in fulfillment of the State's and Department's minimum standards required to become a sworn Police Officer. The Recruit will have to successfully complete a 16-18 week course of study at the Police Training Academy maintaining an average of at least 70%. Upon successful completion of academy training, the Recruit will be required to pass a written examination administered by the Michigan Commission on Law Enforcement Standards (MCOLES). Upon successful completion of the written examination, the Recruit may be eligible to be assigned to complete an on-the-job field-training program while accompanying a sworn Police Officer. Individuals who are not able for any reason to complete the training, or are not able to maintain the State or Department's minimum requirements for successful completion of the 16-18 week training course shall be deemed to have voluntarily terminated their position.

GENERAL STATEMENT OF DUTIES: Under the immediate supervision of the Chief of Police, District Lieutenant, and Sergeant, work activities in this position primarily involve patrolling the Authority's properties to prevent vandalism, fire, theft, and development of unsafe conditions; suppression of criminal activity involving the protection of life and property; enforcing laws and regulations of conduct affecting patrons and visitors; investigating crimes; apprehending those suspected of criminal action; and providing assistance, first aid, and information to park visitors. The City of Charlotte is seeking qualified applicants for the position of full time Police Officer. The City of Charlotte is the county seat for Eaton County and is located 18 miles west of Lansing, Michigan. The Charlotte Police Department covers approximately 5.5 square miles and has a population of approximately 9,074 residents. The current force consists of 16 full time officers; 4 Sgts; 1 Detectives; 1 LT; and 1 Police Chief. Opportunities exist within the department to serve in specialized units such as accident and crime scene technicians; motorcycle patrol; bike patrol and School Resource Officer.

The minimum requirements is Certification by the Michigan Law Enforcement Training Council; two year college degree in Criminal Justice or related field although a 4-year degree is preferred. The hiring process includes a written exam administered online via EMPCO website, oral board examination, a polygraph examination, psychological testing, and extensive background investigation, as well as a medical exam.

The City offers a full range of bargaining unit benefits including paid sick leave, vacation, holiday pay, MERS retirement, and tuition reimbursement. The insurance package includes paid medical, dental, life insurance, Retiree Health Savings, and ICMA matching contributions. The minimum pay range for an entry level Police Officer is $35,880.00.
