Does speaking another language give you a different personality?

"ABC Presenter Grace Williams grew up speaking multiple languages and has found that each one brings out a different part of her personality. For example, in English she's quite sweet, while in Mende she's much more forceful! But is this universally true? Does your language define the way you think and feel about the world? She gets the latest research in sociolinguistics from Professor Nicholas Evans from ANU."

"Our new research suggests that a biological perspective is indeed necessary to resolve why languages have the range of sounds they have. We draw on evidence from paleoanthropology, speech biomechanics, ethnography and historical linguistics to suggest that new speech sounds emerged in our ancient ancestors as their jaws and teeth evolved to deal with new kinds of diets."

Augusta University Pamplin College of Arts, Humanities, and Social Sciences

It's #MajorMonday! Pamplin College at Augusta University houses six departments and a variety of degree programs. Today we’re giving you a look at the Foreign Language programs under the Department of English and Foreign Languages.

This department offers majors in Spanish and French; minors in Spanish, French, and German; and offers courses in Chinese and Arabic.
The ability to communicate in more than one language is a prized skill in the global marketplace, and the process of learning a language aids in neural development and mental flexibility. Our courses focus on both language and culture, helping our students to be better thinkers and global citizens.

“I think that the strength of our Spanish program is in the many ways it offers for students to improve and utilize their Spanish," said Gabriel Foral, a senior Spanish major. "Classes offer opportunities to study usage, art, history, linguistic theory and even to serve the community through our program! Even outside of the class, there is always something available, like club events or volunteer opportunities, that make this program exceptional."

For more information on the Foreign Language programs, visit https://www.augusta.edu/pamplin/english-foreign-languages/foreignlanguages/index.php

“At the age of about 25, your brain starts to decline, in terms of working memory, efficiency...As you age, these declines become steeper. The argument is that as we get into older age, bilingualism puts the brakes on and makes that decline less steep.”
