Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority Incorporated

Yesterday, Kentucky Attorney General Daniel Cameron announced the grand jury’s decision in the shooting death of Breonna Taylor. Sadly, none of the Louisville Police Department officers involved in the fateful shooting were charged with her death. Instead, the Grand Jury returned an indictment for a lesser charge of wanton endangerment against one of the three police officers. The other two were not charged.

There are no words to adequately express the depth of our collective disappointment by this announcement. Alpha Kappa Alpha stands in solidarity with our members in the Central Region, particularly those residing in the center of this controversy in the City of Louisville. After pressing for an indictment for months, all of us had hoped that the outcome would be different and that justice would be served. However, despite what this latest decision would lead us to believe, our lives do matter. We must continue our fight for justice and remain vigilant in demanding policies that protect our civil rights and extend to us the same protections of the law that all American citizens are guaranteed under the Constitution.

Today is yet another reminder of the reason that elections are important. The outcome of the upcoming election will affect the lives of future generations. We must stay the course. We must continue our work to ensure that everyone we can touch is registered to vote and that all votes are counted.

Let us turn our disappointment into action in honor of Breonna Taylor, and, as we continue to say her name, work fervently to make a change through the power of the ballot.

Yours for Alpha Kappa Alpha,

Dr. Glenda Glover
International President and CEO

Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority Incorporated

Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated® and its more than 300,000 members worldwide mourn the passing of United States Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg. Nominated by former President Bill Clinton, Justice Ginsburg joined the Court more than 27 years ago, as only the second woman to serve, and leaves a legacy of championing equal treatment under the law, for all people, especially women. Prior to her initial appointment to the federal bench in 1980 and as a staunch defender of women’s health and civil rights, Justice Ginsburg litigated sex discrimination cases for the American Civil Liberties Union and served as its general counsel from 1973-1980. She also served on the law school faculty at Rutgers Law School and Columbia Law School.

A true student of the United States Constitution, Justice Ginsburg forever changed and shaped American jurisprudence and its impact on American society, particularly to minority and marginalized communities. In tribute to Justice Ginsburg and given the current state of affairs in America, it is critical that all Americans exercise their constitutionally guaranteed right to vote. The President of the United Stated and United States Senators, now or in the not so distant future, will directly impact who Justice Ginsburg’s replacement will be. As Justice Ginsburg said, quoting Martin Luther King, Jr., “The moral arc of the universe is long, but it bends toward justice.” Justice Ginsburg was a legal giant and leaves a legacy of pursuing justice for all. We hope that her replacement will continue that legacy.
