We are proud to have Dr. Seretha Williams representing AU and blazing scholarly trails as part of this vital new digital humanities project.

Today we’re featuring a post from the 2019 scholars of the Black Book Interactive Project —

“As we mourn, Maryemma Graham, the Founder and Director of the Project on the History of Black Writing [HBW] and University Distinguished Professor in English at the University of Kansas, asks us to consider this and poses a different question: what do we gain from studying Black texts and from preserving and archiving Black writers’ voices? How does this kind of research clarify our songs? If we could digitize and search these texts — which Hoyt Long, an Associate Professor of East African Languages and Civilizations at the University of Chicago, notes have been much less represented in online archives — would that transform the ways people read and engage with writing?1 Digitizing these books — and subsequently making more texts accessible for scholars — is what HBW and its collaborator, the Chicago Text Lab (now Textual Optics Lab) hope to accomplish.”

You probably know they do individual consulting and lead workshops across campus and in the community. But they also conduct research on how best to help writers -- which they present and publish to advance knowledge in the discipline.

Check out their newsletter to see some of what they've done this semester, and like their page to get updates on coming events.
