Reason #5: We CAN fix this — together.

This is a solvable problem: A child's cleft lip or cleft palate can be repaired for as little as $240 and in as few as 45 minutes.

You can give renewed hope to children and families around the world. You can save a child from a lifetime of shame!

Reason #4: No child should have to wait months or years to receive medical care simply because of where they live.

Many communities lack the surgical expertise, infrastructure and support needed to treat cleft lip and palate.

But Operation Smile has worked extensively with partners and local foundations to find creative ways to reach and treat children in need — even those in the most remote locations.

Because of you, we'll stop at nothing to provide safe and effective care to children!

Reason #3: Thousands of children still are in need.

Success is possible. Thanks to support from people like you, in Honduras Operation Smile teams of medical volunteers were able to provide surgery to every adult, teen and child who had been unable to access care.

Today, the remaining patients in Honduras who need surgery are nearly all babies and young children who will be able to receive surgery as soon as they are old enough or healthy enough to undergo anesthesia.

No child in the country will grow up malnourished or bullied because of his or her cleft condition.

BUT every three minutes a child is born with a cleft condition, and countless children across the globe are still waiting !!

Reason #2: Children are waiting for us to come back today.

For all the happiness of our medical missions, there's also a heartbreaking flipside. Some children are too sick to receive surgery, or can't make it to our medical mission in time. Knowing that children continue to suffer haunts us. Thanks to people like you, Operation Smile teams can go back as many times as it takes to reach all the children who are counting on us!

Our work exists because of you.

Every single surgery, every new smile, is made possible because of your generosity.

That's why this week we wanted to share a few quick reasons why your support is so critical:

Reason #1: Children's lives are on the line right now.

Cleft lip and cleft palate are not just cosmetic conditions, they can be life-threatening.

Nine out of 10 children with unrepaired cleft conditions likely won't see their 20th birthday.

YOU can change those odds with a safe surgery that takes as little as 45 minutes !!

From Dr. Bill Magee, Jr., D.D.S., M.D.-
Operation Smile's Co-Founder and Chief Executive Officer

I will never forget the day we met a little girl in Bolivia who was abused so badly that she wore a paper bag over her head.

Or the boy from Cambodia who came to our medical mission site with a scarf wrapped around his face, because he didn't want anyone to see him.

The truth is, there's no shortage of stories like these— of children who are bullied, shunned or ostracized because they were born with a cleft lip or cleft palate. It's heartbreaking, but it's why we do everything we do.

Five Reasons Why We Need Your Support:

Reason #1: Children's lives are on the line right now. Cleft lip and cleft palate are not just cosmetic conditions, they can be life-threatening. Nine out of 10 children with unrepaired cleft conditions likely won't see their 20th birthday. You can change those odds with a safe surgery that takes as little as 45 minutes

Reason #2: Children are waiting for us to come back today. For all the happiness of our medical missions, there's also a heartbreaking flipside. Some children are too sick to receive surgery, or can't make it to our medical mission in time. Knowing that children continue to suffer haunts me. Thanks to people like you, we can go back as many times as it takes to reach all the children who are counting on us

Reason #3: Thousands of children still need us. Thanks to support from people like you, in Honduras our teams of medical volunteers were able to provide surgery to every adult, teen and child who had been unable to access care. Today, the remaining patients in Honduras who need surgery are nearly all babies and young children who will be able to receive surgery as soon as they are old enough or healthy enough to undergo anesthesia. No child in the country will grow up malnourished or bullied because of his or her cleft condition. But every three minutes a child is born with a cleft condition, and countless children across the globe are still waiting

Reason #4: No child should have to wait months or years to receive medical care simply because of where they live. Many communities lack the surgical expertise, infrastructure and support needed to treat cleft lip and palate. But we've worked extensively with partners and local foundations to find creative ways to reach and treat children in need — even those in the most remote locations. Because of you, we'll stop at nothing to provide safe and effective care to children

Reason #5: We CAN fix this — together. This is a solvable problem: A child's cleft lip or cleft palate can be repaired for as little as $240 and in as few as 45 minutes. You can give renewed hope to children and families around the world. You can save a child from a lifetime of shame

That little girl who hid her face beneath a paper bag? Today she's happy and healthy, attending school, and no longer afraid to share her smile with the world.

The little boy who wore his scarf wrapped around his face? He's an entirely different person now — one who doesn't fear daily torment from his classmates and neighbors.

At mission after mission, I've seen it happen. Children who once averted their eyes and covered their faces — children like the ones I've mentioned here — leave the hospital with their heads held high, proud to show off their new smile. Their lives have been completely transformed thanks to cleft surgery — and it wouldn't be possible without supporters like you.

On behalf of everyone at Operation Smile, thank you for your support.

We raised $500 from Boo Grams for Operation Smile! Thank you to everyone that made boo grams and bought candy. The organization wouldn't have reached this goal without the support from our individual members.

Have a good one!
